Excellent safety record of LNG fuelled ships and bunkering operations
8
Heading
LNG as ship fuel experience
LNG has been safely used as fuel for non-
LNG carriers for 14 years
No reported major events, e.g. fire,
explosion, grounding etc. caused by LNG
fuelled engines or ancillaries on DNV GL
classed vessels
LNG carrier experience
LNG has been safely transported by large
LNG carriers for more than 50 years
Few incidents reported and no major
accidents
Good safety level achieved through design,
construction and safe operation
Special attention to crew competence and
training

How to move forward establishing LNG bunkering?
Collaboration projects:
– LNG producers, LNG small scale consumers, infrastructure providers,
regulators, financers, design/system suppliers, Class
– Example (DNVGL):
– 2014: USA
– 2013: Korea, China, Middle East, EU
– Australia 2012/13: JIP “LNG bunkering infrastructure in Australia”
– Singapore 2012: JIP “Feasibility study on LNG bunkering in Singapore”

How to move forward establishing LNG bunkering?
Typical focus areas:
– Demand and Capacity forecasting
– Predictability in price and LNG quality
– Economics for LNG fuel provider
– Economics for owner/operator of LNG fuelled ships
– Interface and operational considerations
– Risk assessment and design

The Norwegian NOx-Fund: Tax relief in exchange of NOx-reduction
Following the introduction of NOx-tax, the Business Sector’s NOx Fund started in
2008. The objective is to reduce NOx-emissions.
The Fund is built on an industry/authority-agreement, including tax relief and
quantitative NOx-reduction commitments. Approved by ESA until 2017.
Enterprises pay a fee to the fund per kg NOx emitted, replacing the far
higher state tax. They may then apply for financial support for NOx-
reducing measures, receiving up to 80% coverage of the investment
The Fund covers maritime, oil & gas and land based industry
