From the Principal Dear Parents and Guardians, In Pope John Paul II's words “Jubilee is all about remembering the past with gratude, the present with enthusiasm and the future with hope.” On Saturday, when we celebrated the 90th Jubilee of Marist College, it was all of that. In 1928, following the success of the primary school opened the previous year, Mother Bernard and Sister Ausn established the College, built enrely by voluntary labour. These early Marist women were women of convicon. They were wise, courageous and steadfast in their resolve to offer the very best educaonal opportunies they could. They set exceponally high standards for themselves and for their students and expected nothing short of excellence in every respect. While the curriculum, teaching methods, technologies, buildings, acvies, uniform, governance and management of the school are vastly different now and perhaps would be unrecognizable and incomprehensible to the teachers of 1928, what they would recognise, connect with and be caught up with is the spirit and heart of the school. The sense of pride, belonging, of endeavour of living Catholic and Marist values, is sll strong 90 years later. We owe a huge debt of gratude to the many Marist Sisters who have served our community over the past 90 years and pray that the legacy that they have given Marist College lives on for many years. It was a wonderful gathering with staff, students, Sisters and ex-students enjoying the many displays and items and reminiscing about so many things. In the words of Jacqueline Mormer – Hughes “So many parts, but one Community. We are the living link with the past with Marist College, which we remember with affecon and gratude; the present, which we can but admire, and its future, which we can look to with hope , for many years to come”. At the Jubilee Mass we blessed a very special Icon that had been giſted to the school by an anonymous parent arst. From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

In Pope John Paul II's words “Jubilee is all about remembering the past with gratitude, the present with enthusiasm and the future with hope.” On Saturday, when we celebrated the 90th Jubilee of Marist College, it was all of that. In 1928, following the success of the primary school opened the previous year, Mother Bernard and Sister Austin established the College, built entirely by voluntary labour. These early Marist women were women of conviction. They were wise, courageous and steadfast in their resolve to offer the very best educational opportunities they could. They set exceptionally high standards for themselves and for their students and expected nothing short of excellence in every respect. While the curriculum, teaching methods, technologies, buildings, activities, uniform, governance and management of the school are vastly different now and perhaps would be unrecognizable and incomprehensible to the teachers of 1928, what they would recognise, connect with and be caught up with is the spirit and heart of the school. The sense of pride, belonging, of endeavour of living Catholic and Marist values, is still strong 90 years later. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many Marist Sisters who have served our community over the past 90 years and pray that the legacy that they have given Marist College lives on for many years.

It was a wonderful gathering with staff, students, Sisters and ex-students enjoying the many displays and items and reminiscing about so many things. In the words of Jacqueline Mortimer – Hughes “So many parts, but one Community. We are the living link with the past with Marist College, which we remember with affection and gratitude; the present, which we can but admire, and its future, which we can look to with hope , for many years to come”.At the Jubilee Mass we blessed a very special Icon that had been gifted to the school by an anonymous parent artist. Our gratitude to everyone who had a part in making it such a success, especially the team of ex-students led by Sister Lorraine Campbell, Pat Papa and Lisa-May Gray. Mā te atua koutou e manaaki. May our God bless us all.

Madonna Avvocata (Our Lady Interceding)‘The Pompallier Madonna’Written* by an iconographer amongst the parent community at Marist College over a period of seven years, this is a close replica of the most significant icon in New Zealand history.

The original was gifted by Pope Gregory XVI to Bishop Pompallier when he undertook the first Catholic mission to Aotearoa New Zealand along with the first Marist priests and brothers. It is a copy of an icon that was probably first written as early as the thirteenth century. Some versions are earlier than that. Its origins lie in Istanbul, Turkey, in the Eastern tradition of the church.

Stolen in the 1970s from the walls of St Patrick’s College in Wellington where it was on display, the original has never been found. Our written work has been produced in traditional methods, using egg tempera based pigments layered on gesso-covered wood with real gold leaf trimmings.

We pray for the artist and her family and ask blessings on her for her gift. When we gaze on an icon we are being asked to enter into the picture and go beyond what we can see into the very heart of God. Thus when we display a copy of the Pompallier icon, we are putting ourselves in a long tradition of honouring the Blessed Virgin and asking her to be our advocate with and through her Son, Jesus. In a College which holds as its motto, "To Jesus through Mary", what other image would we need?

*Icons are traditionally spoken of as being ‘written’ rather than ‘painted’, as the creation of an icon is a form of prayer. Icons have been used since the first century as an aid to prayer and are deeply symbolic in the imagery, colours and composition, with every aspect representing a deeper spiritual truth, leading those that contemplate the image to a deeper understanding of the love and mystery of God.

The Rite of Acceptance The Sacramental Programme 2018The Rite of Acceptance was held on Wednesday morning during assembly. This is a formal rite where the candidates participating in the Sacramental Programme are accepted through their public acknowledgement of their desire to be fully initiated Catholics. Our school community prayed for them as they continue on their journey of faith. They also received a very special blessing from our 22 newly commissioned Eucharistic Ministers.

The candidates on the Sacramental Programme for 2018 are Lila Clark, Melania Uhatafe-Tafa, Nichola Bell, Isobel Hill, Renee Rodgers, Piper Bold, Blythe Clancy, Helena MacFarlane, Cadey Zivkovich-Gilmour, Rochelle Suesue, Olivia Manu, Macy Curtis, Nevaeh Gardiner and Scarlett McKay.

Please include them in your prayers.

On Thursday 10 May, 9 Year 10 students attended the Young Free and Pasifika conference. This was an opportunity to listen to inspiring speakers and to participate in activities with other young Pasifika women from schools around Auckland. There was a focus on the performing arts, and the Marist girls demonstrated outstanding Marist spirit and leadership. The attendees were: Seattle Fuiava, Maxine Kelemete, Te Aute Kerrison, Alama Lakalaka, Jayda Matara, Petra Po’uhila, Mana Pongi, Sally Solomona and Rachel Suesue.

I was very honoured and enjoyed being a part of this wonderful opportunity. I learnt a lot from this and would want to attend more opportunities like this in the future. Young Free and Pasifika has taught me a lot such as learning to be confident with my own culture and identity, by focusing on three main topics: explore, empower and embrace. In my understanding of these main focuses I learnt that through exploring new things we develop a feeling of empowerment and we start to accept and embrace who we are. I also learnt that to be a leader you have to know and understand what community you stand in, that there is no use in leading a group to somewhere you haven’t been to. Another thing I learnt was that before you give up, remember your ancestors who left the islands for a better lifestyle. You should also be questioning yourself; why? What is the reason for giving up? – Rachel Suesue

The Vinnies Commissioning Mass on Saturday 5th May at St Patrick’s Cathedral was a beautiful event, with our four Vinnies leaders being commissioned - Britney D’Souza, Veilomani Tafa, Yohanna D’Costa and Grace Clemas.

The mass was also well attended by Marist students supporting their fellow Marist Vinnies members.

Sports ReportsFootball:Marist 1st XI have had three excellent games. This week’s win took them to a hat-trick, with a commanding game over Green Bay 7-0. Mary’s 5-1, and coming back to win in the last 10 minutes vs Western Springs 4-3.

They have showed real character and now top the table after three rounds. Top stuff girls!

Lacrosse:This week's game the girls played well to tie with Glendowie. Both teams scored 3 goals.

Netball:Intermediate netball teams have had their grading games the past two weeks, there was a great difference from week 1 to 2 with the girls really working together as a team. A couple of wins in there – 7 Yellow, and 8 Yellow, well done! The games are delight to watch.

Hockey:Year 7/8 have played well in their first 2 games and are coming together well as a team, though unable to secure a win.

1XI had a bye last week, played Dio last night, had 80% of the posession and many shots on goal but game ended in a 1-1 draw. Thank you to Alex Meyer and Katie Van der Plas who filled in as 2 players came out with injuries. The new dresses look good.

2XI had their first game last Friday again a close match but were unable to secure a win. We had our fundraising sausage sizzle on Sunday which went well. The car wash is coming up on 17th June.

RAISING RESILIENT TEENS

RAISING RESILIENT TEENSAn event bringing you practical tips on BUILDING RESILIENCE and BOOSTING CONFIDENCE.

What are our girls watching? As you will be aware, today we have access to an incredible selection of television series and movies through the internet, Nexflix, Sky, Lightbox, Neon, Freeview and the list goes on. There are currently several challenging and possibly distressing topics featuring in series and movies young people are watching and talking about, specifically on Netflix.

Counties Manukau District Health Board (CMDHB) has distributed from the Chief Censor a guide for parents: Talking with young people about what they’re watching and encourage us to share it with our parent and whanau community. The guide is available at https://www.classificationoffice.govt.nz/news/latest-news/challenging-media/ .

“Here’s the thing. Your teenager is being influenced by the things they watch…This guide is about helping you to help them” – CHIEF CENSOR DAVID SHANKS

Parents or whanau concerned about a young person in crisis should be encouraged to seek help. The Mental Health Foundation has a list of help contacts at https://www.mentalhealth.org.nz/get-help/in-crisis/ , or they can phone their local District Health Board’s Mental Health Crisis Team (CATT Team). Support is also available from a trained counsellor anytime by calling or texting 1737.

For questions around this in relation to your daughter, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on 8468311 ext. 738.

MARIST COLLEGE International Student Department Catholic School for Girls, Years 7 to 13 www.maristcollege.school.nz

Student Stories Weichen Zhang (Vivian) Year 13 in 2016 I am currently a Year 13 student at Marist College. Beijing is my home town where I was born and raised, and now I’ve already been in New Zealand for almost 3 years. As an International Student, I went through a challenging period of time when I first arrived, in my new country. But when I look back now, I appreciate the challenges I’ve experienced and I do feel that coming to Marist College has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

Before I came here, I received offers from all 3 high schools that I applied for, including Marist College, another girls’ school and a co-ed school. Even though I was not Catholic, I made up my mind to come to Marist as my family believed that people who have a religion would be more kind. Indeed, the Students at Marist College all have very good manners. They are polite and friendly and they would never leave you alone in class discussions.

The staff at Marist are caring and helpful as well. I’ve grown from a shy little girl to a leader in Year 13 and I have high achievements in all my subjects with great help from teachers and local students. I appreciate that!

Marist College also has helped me to find my passion in life. Now I’ve received offers of BA Media from my dream schools in England. I’ve learnt so much from Marist both academically and spiritually. I believe if you come to Marist, you can also learn how strong you can be, that you are capable to achieve anything that you want.
