Soccer The Marist Soccer Club has come to the end of another

long season. As I sit down to prepare the President's report for 2004, I express my thanks to Mr Michael Kilfoyle and his committee for handing over to the new President and Committee a successful, growing and fmancially strong club. I express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the 2004 Committee for their support and work this season; without their ongoing, tireless efforts, the Club could not function.

With over 330 students registering to play soccer for the school, continuing the trend where over the last three years the Soccer Club has averaged over 325 registered players each season and has fielded a tota l of 21, 22 and 24 teams respectively, a lot of work was undertaken by a comparatively small committee to initially grade players, organise pre-season and special competitions, as well as forming and supporting teams, coaches and managers, players and referees.

This year's pre-season schedu le was the most intensive yet. In addition to the annual games against representative Eurobodalla sides, a new competition was formed with the St Edmund 's College Soccer Club. The MARSEC Shield competition was created to build and enhance the relationship between the two soccer clubs. The last two Saturdays in March had home and away fixtures that covered all our playing age groups and ended with Marist taking the inaugural MARSEC Shield. On the second Saturday of the competition, the North Sydney Bears Soccer Club brought two sides to play against both Marist and St Edmund's U 15 teams. The visit was reciprocated by Marist Soccer in early September, when two of our U 15 sides made the trip to Sydney. As a result, a happy group of players made the bus trip back home with another inaugural trophy - the Intercity Cup.

The MARSEC Shield competition led to another innovation between the Marist and St Edmund 's clubs - the formation of the combined Marist and St Edmund's U 19 team, to allow our Year 12 students the opportunity to continue to play for the school. The team was registered in the senior mens ' State league competition and went on to perform competitively at this level. 1 thank Mr Laurie Hicks for taking on the coaching position for this team.

The work of organising the pre-season activities was a herculean task. I thank all the people who were involved in organising and running the various teams. I particularly wish to express the gratitude of the club to Ms Judy Hall and Mr Pat Bellgard for their efforts. The Club is also gratefu l to the committee of the St Edmund's College Soccer Club, in particular Mr Bob French and Mr Fred Zarb, for working with us in the inception and organisation of the MARSEC concept.

On behalf of the Club I congratulate the Marist First XI team for playing through the season undefeated and winning the 2004 ACT U 17 Division 1 junior league champ ionship. This win was the fifth for Marist over the last eleven seasons. I congratulate Mr Shaf Khan on taking the team to the championship in his first year at the Club and his nomination for the 2004 junior league Coach of the Year awa rd .

! congratulate the U 17 Division 3 team who were runnersup in their competition. A number of teams finished within or just out of the top four in their respective divisions and all of our other teams performed well. I congratulate all of them. The Bill Turner Cup squad was successful in reach ing the ACT fmal series and ! thank the squad, their coach Mr

Sam Caggiano, and manager Ms Assunta Corrado for their efforts.

Looking to next year, Soccer Canberra is finalising the introduction of an U 18 competition to replace the existing U 17 structure. This will mean that Marist students will now be ab le to play for the soccer club all the way through to the end of Year 12. It will also a llow the further development of the U 16 competitions. Planning has also begun for another UK tour and as soon as the details have been fina lised, nominations will be sought from senior players wishing to be considered for selection.

With the number of sporting clubs increasing, it is becoming more difficult to engage and obtain the support of sponsors. It is therefore with sincere thanks that the Club acknowledges the continued support and generosity of Margaret O'Donovan - Your City Physio, for once again providing sponsorship. This season the Club undertook a review of sponsorship options and the benefits that we could offer a prospective sponsor. By reviewing the sponsorship guidelines it is hoped that small and medium businesses will consider providing sponsorship . Initial feedback on the new sponsorship opportunities has been positive and it is hoped that the Club will have an increase in business sponsorship next year.

I express the sincere gratitude of the Club to Mr Ross Tarlinton for his support through the year. I particularly wish to thank him for arranging the construction of the new fence that now borders the playing fields, a major improvement in the safety of all players. I also thank the grounds staff for their exceptional work in providing the Club with some of the best playing surfaces in the ACT.

The close, co-operative relationship that the soccer club enjoys with Marist College sets us apart from the other school-based clubs. Over the past few years this relationship has been developed and enhanced by the senior school soccer coordinator, Mr Pat Bellgard and the junior school coordinator, Br Andrew Macfarlane. They have put in a great effort, during and outside school time, towards supporting the players, parents and soccer club. In particular, their work this year in the support and guidance they have provided to the players, parents, coaches and managers and the club in general, has been beyond what could reasonably be considered as these roles. On behalf of the entire Marist soccer community, I thank them for their efforts and support over this and previous seasons.

! thank all those volunteers who have provided their time and effort towards helping the Club. To the coaches and managers I express my gratitude for the work and time they have put in this season. I particularly thank our senior students and college teachers who took on the added responsibility of coaching this year.

The skills development academy and other pre-season programs organised by the Club could not happen without the input and efforts of a number of skilled individuals. I particularly thank Mr Jack Kynaston, Mr Michael Van Den Engel, Mr Sam Caggiano, Mr Robert Hush, Mr Mario Sallecchia, Mr Shaf Khan and Mr Michael Hanna for their work with the various squads.

This year the club had the opportunity to run the pavilion canteen over a number of Saturdays. I thank Ms Elly McGinness for taking on the role of canteen co-ordinator

assisting. The proceeds from i9ijt++tM!WI 111111+....,~lollll the canteen made a large

contribution to the club's fundraising efforts. To the volunteers who assisted on the canteen roster, entertainment book and chocolate drives, shirt washing and orange rosters, I thank you for not only supporting your son and his team, but the soccer club as a whole.

The 2004 season saw the introduction of the zero tolerance rule by both the junior and senior leagues. Though it did to some extent reduce the use of foul language on the playing field, it did result in increased pressure on referees by coaches, managers,

F=~~·-""1 parents and players. In some cases this resulted in a number of junior and senior referees

~e..~~~~~~i9.~ quitting the game. Through ~~'*~~lit1~ all of this the referee panel at

of its members and cover all but two home games during the season; due to the general shortage of referees, Marist referees also covered eleven away games. I thank all the Marist referees for their perseverance and efforts.

Soccer in the ACT and Australia is entering an interesting new phase. With the introduction of the Australian Soccer Association (ASA) and a new national soccer competition, work is being undertaken to research and introduce world best practices into local soccer; there will be major changes in the management of national and local soccer as well as prospects for major change in the form and structure of junior competitions. To meet these challenges, the Marist Club must continue to have a proactive and enthusiastic administration that contains the required skills as well as the numerical strength to allow it to provide the opportunities and support that our players need for their continued personal growth and development within the sport. It is my hope that everyone

with links to the Marist soccer community will consider what they can do to assist next season and take an active role in one of the best soccer clubs that 1 personally have been associated with.

And finally to the most important members of any soccer club, our players. Gentlemen, I thank you for your participation this year in the world's greatest sport. We have had mixed success across the teams this year, but more importantly I hope that you have enjoyed your season and that you will return to the sport next year full of enthusiasm and energy.
