FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALNational Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week

Friday, 26 May marked an important day of commemoration and hope as we came together as a College to share the steps towards healing for the stolen generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

Chad (Year 8) commenced the day with Acknowledgement of Country, a custom and practice that has become a regular part of our College culture. Wurundjeri Elder, Joy Murphy Wandin, describes Acknowledgement of Country as a “a very important way of giving Aboriginal people back their place in society, and an opportunity for us to say, ‘We are real, we are here, and today we welcome you to our land’…It’s paying respect, in a formal sense, and following traditional custom in a symbolic way.”

Students enjoyed a screening of Rabbit Proof Fence highlighting the true story of three young indigenous girls forcibly removed from their families and the journey they embarked on to find a way home. Staff and students united by signing the pledge banner as a sign of solidarity and recognition of the need to be active participants in the healing process.

The day culminated with an amazing didgeridoo demonstration by Liam.

Please take the time to view the video of the day’s events by clicking on the link or scanning the following QR code.

May I take the opportunity to thank Chad, Liam, James (SRC) and all students who actively engaged in the organisation of Sorry Day. In particular, I would like to congratulate and thank Mrs Harvey, Ms Beard, Ms Collins, Ms Scali and Ms Khalaf for their commitment and leadership of this wonderful initiative.

Reminders from the Assistant Principal

- The presentation our students at the College and in the community is highly regarded and frequently commented on as an impressive attribute of belonging to MCCP. Please ensure that your son/daughter maintain this high standard by ensuring that haircuts are of a conservative style.

- Boys: Undercut, steps, stripes or other patterns are not acceptable.

- Girls: Hair must be of a natural colour and tied back at all times .

- Parents/Carers, please adhere to the kiss and ride signs immediately outside the College.

Council will fine vehicles for temporarily parking outside the kiss and ride area, thereby obstructing the bus stop.

RECONCILIATION WEEKOn Friday, 26 May our school paid tribute to the Custodial People of Australia. This week, during National Reconciliation Week, PC Classes have listened to prayers acknowledging the importance of reconciliation between Indigenous Australians and Non-Indigenous Australians. Each religion class attended the Chapel in order to pay their respects to Indigenous Australians, learn about their culture, and pray for reconciliation. Additionally, on Thursday 1 June at assembly, we had a guest speaker Sarah Hyde who through her passion for indigenous rights, has walked the Rabbit Proof Fence. She was interviewed by Ms Beard and gave us some interesting insights into indigenous issues.

I have written the following prayer/poem to raise awareness of Reconciliation week.

We feared your differencesWe didn’t listen or careA stolen generationIt was all so unfair

So many years laterWe understand we were wrongWe reconcile our differencesAnd stand together and strong

We understand your beliefsWe respect your cultural wayWe pray that we standBy the things that we say.

Daniel Borg - Year 9

NATIONAL SORRY DAY REFLECTION‘Sorry Day’ is a tradition in Australia where we say sorry and commemorate the original owners of the land on the 26 May. We say sorry to the stolen generation and those who were taken from their families, and those who were forced to live a different life, causing them untold hardships.

The Marist community acknowledged this and started a tradition to acknowledge ‘Sorry Day’. We had many activities including: whole school acknowledgement of country during morning pastoral class with some reflective prayers. We also had an opportunity for the students at our school to sign a pledge which honoured ‘Sorry Day’ and during recess and lunch “Rabbit Proof Fence” played in the library. I had an opportunity to play the didgeridoo so that our students can learn and get involved with the Indigenous culture. It was a memorial day and a tradition which the Marist community will continue to honour.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

Archbishops Leadership ForumOn Friday 12th of May, Marko Budanovic and Zachary Pitkethley from Year 11 attended a special forum hosted by Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP at Notre Dame University. His Grace organised a gathering with two student leaders from each secondary school in the Archdiocese to explore the students’ thoughts regarding the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF). His Grace also wished to have a dialogue with our future leaders to discuss the benefits and challenges of leadership. This is excellent preparation at a local level for the 2018 Year of Youth. During the forum, His Grace addressed questions from the audience in a “Q & A” style about a range of issues, including contemporary moral issues. Following the forum, we celebrated mass at St Benedict Church. The day was a wonderful opportunity for our Year 11 leaders to connect with our church leadership as well as leaders from other schools in the diocese.

Mr Robert Reilly - Year 11 Leader of Wellbeing

ACYF PenshurstOn Sunday, 29 May we attended the Steve Angrisano concert at St Declan’s Parish, Penshurst. Accompanied by Mrs Vassallo and Mrs Vidiac, we learnt about Steve’s past experiences as well as his faith journey so far. He told his stories through the use of song and music. This entertaining and spiritually fulfilling afternoon involved dancing and singing with Steve and allowed us to connect with other young Catholics in the area. The concert was part of the count down to the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) that all Year 10 and 11 students will be attending at the end of this year. After the concert, we were treated to some afternoon tea where we were given the opportunity to meet the local Priests as well as some volunteers from various organisations that work with the youth of the Catholic Church. Soon after, we proceeded into the Church where we had adoration and finished the evening with a Eucharistic celebration. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to the Australian Catholic Youth Festival!

PEER SUPPORTOur Peer Support Program for Year 7 had its final session today. Over the first two terms, Year 7 students had the opportunity to engage in a supportive learning environment to develop skills, understandings and strategies to improve their social and emotional wellbeing as they embark on their College journey. Peer Support is an effective program that assists the transition of Year 7 students into our College community.

We had a wonderful group of Year 9 and 10 students who guided Year 7 in sessions that focused on areas such as resilience, decision making, problem solving and leadership. The young men and ladies in Year 7 were just wonderful to work with and willingly engaged with their Year 9 and 10 leaders.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Peer Support Leaders who showed notable leadership skills, care and patience as they guided and mentored Year 7. I would also like to thank Ms Beard for her support and input throughout these sessions.

Ms Anne Collins - Peer Support Facilitator

HSIE NEWSYear 7 History students are learning about the fascinating society of Ancient Egypt, how the society operated and the many Gods they worshiped. The students have taken a keen interest in the kingship of Pharaohs including their burial and after-life. Students have been immersed in a variety of learning experiences. Walking into Mr Di Terlizzi’s class, our young historians are stimulated by Egyptian music as they travel back in time to learn why ancient Gods were held with sacred respect. And then it begins … a scavenger hunt in the breakout areas of the Champangant classrooms to discover how the many Gods ruled over Egyptian life. From here students chose a God of their choice and through a visual literacy task, explained the importance of that God to ancient followers.

YEAR 7 CAMPOn the 3rd to the 5th of April, Year 7 went on camp to Wesley Vision Valley where we had a fun and interesting experience. It was a time that we got to bond as a year group and become closer to each other. On camp we did lots of fun activities including the flying fox, archery, canoeing, high ropes, low ropes, giant crate stacking, vertical challenge, leap of faith and learning about our indigenous brothers and sisters through a Cultural Experience. Having the chance to learn some of the Indigenous Peoples dances was wonderful. We also enjoyed staying in the cabins, talking to our friends and playing trivia. We would like to thank the teachers for giving up their valuable time to take us and stay with us for these 3 days. Ms Beard, Mr Barnes, Ms Thornton, Ms Scali, Miss De Nigris, Mr Di Terlizzi, Miss Khalaf, Ms Hopkins and Mr Forrest. We had an amazing time on camp and we will never forget this moment in our lives.

YEAR 8 VISUAL ARTSAs part of the Visual Arts program in Year 8, students this term have been exploring the genre of portraiture. They have looked at not only historical and modern interpretations of portraits but also how artists today create contemporary appropriations of this subject matter. Here are some of their wonderful works looking specifically at caricatures and a Japanese Manga.
