FROM THE PRINCIPAL ContinuedJesus summarised the 613 commands prescribed in the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament. The first being to love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. The second is to love your neighbour. Jesus distinguishes between the two commands, but he does not separate them.

As Emeritus Professor Anne Hunt OAM explains that in fact they constitute a single command. Jesus commanded that love of God and love of neighbour go hand in hand and, together, encapsulate what God requires of us. This is beautifully expressed in the Lord’s Prayer – Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

So at the heart of Jesus’ teaching about how we should live our lives and express our discipleship is love. This love is expressed through mercy, compassion and forgiveness, in generosity of heart and spirit, in our individual lives and in our life together as a Marist community.

Although Jesus’ teaching seems so simple it is profoundly challenging. Just as Jesus challenged the people of his time, he challenges us today to reflect on our behaviour in terms of our love of neighbour and how may we further improve as well as our love for God.

GIRLS NIGHT IN ‘The Marist Girls Night’ In is a Pink Ribbon event that raises money to fund research into Women’s cancers, prevention programs and support services to help those already affected. The Girls Night In was an ideal reason to ‘celebrate friendships that matter for a cause that matters’.

Our night was a huge success featuring karaoke, an abundance of ‘pink’ treats and a mega raffle. Thanks to the generosity of our school community we raised a record $4 108. This definately exceeded our initial goal of $2000. I would like to thank all the families who made generous donations and contributions to the cause ranging from the amazing gifts to the delicious sweets.

Special thanks to the many local Mortdale and Penshurst businesses who provided vouchers, prizes and services for our mega raffle, namely; Top of the Crop, Head Office hair dressers, Gloria Jeans, Bresnahans Butchery, Hangloose Cafe, Grind Café, Short black, Punchy’s gym, Mortdale Newsagency, Mortdale Wholesalers, Specialist Skin & Laser Clinique and Hoxland Property Group.

Finally thanks to all the fabulous staff members who donated goods and contributed to the evening.

Yours In Pink,Ms Nicole Katrib - PDHPE Department

GIRLS NIGHT IN - STUDENT THOUGHTSThe Girls Night In was a fun and exciting time for girls in Marist Catholic College Penshurst to gather and commemorate cancer awareness. There were so many fun games like bra pong and karaoke and a nail salon there was also free food and desserts. At the Girls Night In there were raffles and giant prizes to be won. There were Ipads, movie vouchers, Victoria Secret and many more exciting prizes. There were even Meat Vouchers to be won. During the Girls Night In, two ladies from the Cancer Council talked to us about the effects of Breast Cancer. On the night we remembered the loss of Miss Mary Beretov and to all the other students who are suffering or who have lost a loved one. Overall the night was amazing and we hope that next year there will be another Girls Night In.

Erica and Jessica – Year 8 Students

The La Valla Centre turned pink last Friday night for the very first time at MCCP Girls’ Night In. Over 140 girls dressed in pink to raise money for the Cancer Council and to remember Ms Beretov who passed away last year from breast cancer. I was part of the leadership team that lead this initiative. It was a great opportunity for my own development

We had a great time with lots of fun activities such as karaoke, photo booth and more. We also had a mega raffle with prizes donated by local businesses and families. Over $4000 was raised from the night and from selling pink ribbons and other merchandise over the last few weeks.

We would like to thank the teachers, especially Miss Katrib and Mrs Collins for all their hard work organising the night and hope there can be another one next year.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALI was overwhelmed by the sense of community, solidarity and fun at the inaugural Girls Night In held last Friday evening. Our young ladies embraced the evening with purpose, great humour and collegiality in raising awareness and funds for ongoing research in breast and gynaecological cancers. Media attention has been prevalent with articles appearing in The Catholic Weekly, The About Catholic Schools blog and The St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

A heartfelt thanks and congratulations must go to Mrs Nicole Katrib and Ms Anne Collins, who, together with our Girls Night In student leaders put their time into the organisation of a wonderful evening in recognition of a most important cause.

Important InformationOpen parent communication is vital in establishing a working partnership with our college. It is important that parents and carers follow certain communication protocols to ensure a collaborative dialogue at an appropriate time.

Please find below an Information Sheet from Sydney Catholic Schools titled Communicating with School Staff. We encourage parents/carers take the time to read through this information sheet so as to assist in guiding us towards mutually respectful relationships for the benefit of your son/daughter.

Mr Chris Morris - Assistant Principal

Communicating with School Staff – Information Sheet for Parents There are ways parents can prepare for discussions with teachers and schools to assist in achieving positive educational outcomes. Open parent communication is vital in establishing a working partnership with your child’s school. It is important that parents and carers follow certain communication protocols to ensure a collaborative dialogue at an appropriate time.

Face-to-face meetings

Parents are encouraged to chat to school staff and get to know them. Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) are warm and welcoming local communities.

However, if you wish to discuss anything specific in relation to your child, it is important to make an appointment and have this conversation confidentially.

Teachers are available to meet with parents and guardians at scheduled parent/teacher afternoons or evenings to discuss your child’s progress.Your child’s teacher or school leader may also contact you to arrange a face-to-face meeting to discuss a particular issue regarding your child. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher or a school leader outside of those occasions about a particular issue, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting time with reasonable notice.

Due to obligations for teaching, supervision, meetings and extra-curricular activities, it will be rarely possible for a staff member to meet with you immediately if you attend the school site without notice. If there is an urgent matter you need to discuss with a member of school staff, please contact the school office directly.

Please do not attempt to meet with your child’s teacher or a school leader about your child at morning drop off, afternoon pick up or another school event. During drop off, pick up and at school events, teachers and school leaders are often on duty supervising students. If they were to engage in one-on-one conversation of any length with a particular parent this may cause them to neglect their supervision duties to all students.

Phone calls

All phone calls to school staff should be via the school main reception line. Each school reception is generally open for phone calls between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm.

Teachers and school leaders will ordinarily be teaching or meeting during that time and will rarely be available to speak with you immediately, but the school reception will take a message and alert the class teacher as soon as practical.

If a matter is urgent, please alert the school support officer in reception accordingly.Urgent matters include urgent health issues impacting students (eg. forgotten medication), police issues or serious issues impacting student wellbeing.

For non-urgent matters, school staff, including teachers, will return your call or enquiry within three days.

If you become aware that your child or another parent has a teacher’s mobile number please inform the school office. Please ensure that you do not communicate with your child’s teacher by mobile phone.

Emails are a helpful way to communicate with your child’s school.

For non-urgent matters school staff including teachers will return your email or enquiry within three working days during school term time.School staff are not required to return emails at night or on weekends and ordinarily will not be checking emails during those hours.

We would encourage parents and carers to phone the school directly regarding any urgent matters as there may be a delay in receiving emails.

Social Media

School staff are not able to connect with students, parents or guardians via social media for child protection reasons. Please do not attempt to contact school staff via social media.

The name of a school is a private trademarked entity. Parents/guardians are not to set up groups in the school name on social media without consultation with and consent from the school’s principal.

Written notes

Primary school parents/guardians should feel free to send their child to school with a note for the office or their teacher.

Secondary school parents/guardians may communicate with school staff via the student diary.

Any messages from your child’s teacher will also be communicated via the student diary, so please ensure that you check and sign your child’s diary at least once a week to show you have read these messages.

CBSA BASEBALLThe 2017 CBSA Baseball Gala Day was held on Thursday, October 19th 2017. Despite our early morning departure, the sun was shining and the MCCP Baseball team arrived at Kelso Park, Panania ready to take on the challenge. Many of our players did not have a lot of baseball experience but during our warm-up session, our seasoned players led them through batting and catching drills and passed along the tips and tricks involved in stealing bases.

Our first game was against Holy Spirit Catholic College, Lakemba and their players had us laughing for most of the game as a result of their humorous comments and jovial nature. The game was tied for the first half but we managed to double their score for the second inning, gaining us our first win of the day! Rosebank College was our next challenge and although the competition was very tight, some fantastic teamwork and two runs each from Flavio, Jonah and Mark, helped to secure our second win.

Game three saw us versing St Mary’s Cathedral College and unfortunately our pitchers, Flavio and Sam, were tiring and we didn’t find our stride until the second half of the game. Even though we didn’t win, all but two of our players managed to make it through to home base, some with the help of Jonah who hit our only home run for the day. Our final game was against the reigning champions, De La Salle College, Revesby. Jonah took over as pitcher and managed to keep their run score low right up until the fourth inning when even our tight teamwork couldn’t save us.

It was a great day for all involved and the students enjoyed themselves and represented the College with great pride. Thank you to Mr Paul Burg for his organization for the day and Mr Michael Young who acted as the Baseball Convenor.

Driving safely near school busesThere is a 40km/h speed limit for traffic passing a school bus that is setting down or picking up school children. This speed limit is for all traffic travelling in the same direction as the bus, whether the bus is stationary or moving.

Lights will flash on the front and back of the bus reminding drivers that there may be children crossing or about to cross the road.

Buses can’t stop quickly because they are large and heavy vehicles. So, remember:

• Reduce speed to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing

• Give way to buses

• Watch out for children crossing

• Never park in or near a bus stop or bus zone.

Informal school bus stops

Informal bus stops are not sign posted and are usually found in rural areas. They may be at the front of a property, or on the side of the road, which may make children difficult to see.
