FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Enrolments are now open for Year 7, 2019 Applications Close Friday 7th April, 2017
This week I would like to start by acknowledging the fabulous support we receive from both David Coleman MP, Federal Member for Banks, and Mark Coure MP, State Member for Oatley. Their generosity in visiting the College, attending presentation events and providing valuable insight into the development of this College is greatly appreciated.
On the right is an excerpt from David Coleman’s speech of 2 March 2017 to the House of Representatives which highlighted achievements of our College.
BISHOP UMBERSOn Wednesday 22nd March we welcomed Bishop Richard Umbers and the local Parish Priests to our College for Morning Tea. It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to meet Bishop Umbers who was able to go on a tour of our College and speak with various students. Thank you to the College Leadership Team, staff and students for your support of this event. We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with our local Parishes.
Some practical way that students can continue to develop a rapport with their local Parish Priest is by attending Reconciliation on Tuesday’s at Lunch time in the Chapel (Priests from St Declan’s), attending our monthly Mass on Wednesday mornings in the chapel and next Wednesday 29th March Fr Paul Smithers and Deacon Gerard will be sharing a Subway lunch with the students from the Regina Coeli Parish. Next term we will be resuming our Tuesday morning Masses at St Declan’s where one RE class will attend the Parish mass with their class teacher.
A big thank you to all of our staff and students who have been actively engaged in fundraising for Project Compassion. The spirit amongst the students and staff has been fantastic. Each person in our College has been challenged to live out the Gospel value of service by loving their neighbour this Lenten season and this has been clearly evident over the past few weeks at Marist. Congratulations to all involved.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALParents/Carers,
It was a great pleasure and privilege to be involved in the target setting interviews for the first time as a new member of this wonderful community. What was clearly apparent was the willingness of parents/carers to engage in focused learning, ministry and wellbeing conversations with teachers who work on a daily basis with your son/daughter.
This process clearly aligns with the Authentic Learning Statement released by Sydney Catholic Schools in 2016.
Authentic assessment is realised when parent/carers understand where their child is at on the learning continuum and efforts are made to clarify future learning needs. This is enabled through focused conversations with their child’s teachers.
Can I personally thank Mr Moe Akkawy, Director of Pedagogy and Administration in conjunction with the Leaders of Wellbeing for giving leadership to this most worthwhile process. I’d also like to thank our staff for their professionalism and commitment to the process.
We hope to revisit these goals throughout the year to make subtle adjustments as the need arises.
Mr Chris Morris - Assistant Principal
On Thursday, 7th March 2017, twenty enthusiastic, cooperative and skilled students represented the College in chess at the CBSA gala day at St Charbel’s Catholic College in Punchbowl.
The Year 7, 8 and 9 teams all made it to the grand final this year. Year 7 and 8 were unfortunate to narrowly lose their grand finals to Rosebank College in nail-biting games, while Year 9 drew in their match against Revesby. This resulted in Daniel Fuller, our best player, having to play one more game against Revesby’s best player to decide the winner. Daniel won this game in supreme style under huge pressure, taking his team to joyous victory.
Year 10, probably our strongest team on the day, won most of their games against very tough competition, but were unlucky to go down to St Mary’s Cathedral in the semi finals.
Finally, our senior team consisting of Year 12 students did themselves and the College proud by playing every game with diligence and determination. The students led by example throughout the day, supporting and encouraging the juniors and celebrating their successes along the way.

PUBLIC SPEAKINGLast Friday saw the conclusion of the Catholic Schools Debating Association’s (CSDA) Public Speaking competition. Charlotte Bulmer from Year 8 progressed from the Zone Finals for the second year in a row. With only 12 students in each year group making the grand final, this is an exceptional achievement. She spoke with wit, charisma and energy as she delivered an engaging speech on the topic of ‘Mud. Glorious. Mud’ challenging the audience on contemporary issues. Unfortunately she did not place on the evening, but was praised by many in the audience for the maturity and enthusiasm with which she presented her speech.
I would like to thank Mrs Eljed, Miss Emmerick, Mr Skoflic and Ms Collins for all their work in preparing the students for the competition. I would like to congratulate all the students who entered the competition on their achievements. We encourage our skilled orators to participate in the debating competition held in Term 2 and Marist Oratory in Term 3.
Ms Lisa Farrelly - Public Speaking Coordinator
PUBLIC SPEAKING
EARTH HOUREarth Hour, organised by WWF, is a global grassroots movement uniting people to take action on climate change and protect the planet. Earth Hour was famously started as a lights out event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage millions of supporters in more than 170 countries and territories, inspiring individuals and organisations worldwide to take climate action. As the movement grows, the one-hour lights out event continues to be the symbol of a broader commitment toward the planet.
2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of Earth Hour as a global phenomenon. What started as an Australian idea has grown into a global force of nature that is now celebrated in over 172 countries and over 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. The symbolic hour has grown into the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, with beyond-the-hour projects and initiatives happening throughout the year.
How can we as a school community, get involved in Earth Hour 2017?
This year’s theme is about how our actions today will have a big impact on our future planet.
You could spend Earth Hour at an outdoor place you love like the beach, the local park or even your backyard or balcony to have a discussion about what the future will be like, and the clean and green world we want for our future.
The easiest and simplest way to get involved in Earth Hour is on the 25th March, between 8:30 and 9:30PM, “switch off”. This can be done by turning off all non-essential electrical devices including; phones, Playstations and televisions for one hour. Or by completely turning off all non-essential lights and electrical appliances in your home. By doing this, we as a community recognise the effects of carbon emissions on climate change and use this our as a symbol of striving to change this environmental issue. As stewards of God’s creation we have a duty to ensure the future of our planet.

SRC NEWSOne initiative in 2017 is to extend and promote the role of our SRC leadership. This initiative will allow students to develop their leadership skills within the College. The SRC House Captains, along with other House students, will have the opportunity to organise and run fundraising events within the college. As part of this process, the different Houses have an opportunity to earn points towards the House Cup Award 2017, which will be presented at the end of the year.
SHROVE TUESDAYMore and Salvius leaders, with the support of the whole SRC, made an outstanding effort raising money for Caritas on Shrove Tuesday. On the previous evening, we had a brigade of helpers preparing for the set-up and making delicious homemade batter. More and Salvius ran two pancake stalls before school and raised almost $300 in less than an hour - not bad for our first endeavour and much appreciated by Caritas. Both Houses showed exemplary leadership management skills as they enticed hungry students to buy more than one tasty pancake. There was a great sense of community as House captains tried to sell their pancakes and there were even calls of pancake cheating when Salvius maintained that More were selling smaller pancakes for the same price, to boost their sales. All in all, it was a great launch of our fundraising SRC initiative. Thanks to all the staff who supported the students, especially Mr Morris, Ms De Nigris, Mr McBride, Ms Elhage, Ms Beard and Mrs Vassallo.
Mrs Anne Collins - SRC Support Staff
ST PATRICKS DAYOn the Friday 17 March, Dunstan and Leopold held a St Patrick’s Day fundraiser for Caritas, an organisation that helps to end poverty and encourages justice in developing countries. In the morning we sold hot cross buns and had face painting by Year 8 and 9 art students. At lunch and recess we sold cupcakes and held numerous activities including a planking contest and a skittles bowling challenge. Our House, Dunstan, was situated in the Champagnat Village. The school spirit and involvement was fantastic. People of all years came to support this great cause, with multiple students willing to volunteer to help out on the day, including school leaders and students from other years, who encouraged the younger students. There were also around 60 students from all years who contributed to the making of the cupcakes that were sold on the day. There was live Irish music, which brought out the inner dancing skills of students and teachers, especially Ms Collins, whom considered it the most important day of the year. Overall the day turned out to be a great success and both houses collectively ended up raising just under $1000.

PEER SUPPORTAs part of supporting Year 7 transition to secondary college, our Year 7 have been part of a Peer Support Program to help them adjust and integrate into the College. We have a wonderful team of Year 9 and Year 10 students to lead these sessions. Some of the issues covered this term were: friendships, challenges and resilience. During these sessions, Year 7 students were led by our Peer Support leaders to discuss these issues and possible strategies of dealing with them.
The Peer Support Leaders have demonstrated wonderful leadership skills as they help Year 7 integrate into our College. Our Peer Support Program will continue next term. Thank you to all the staff who have supported these sessions, especially Ms Beard. Your input has been invaluable.

SCIENCE EXCURSIONOn Tuesday the 7th of March, Biology and Senior Science students headed off to a local wetland ecosystem at Towra Point to perform an ecological study of the area by putting the skills we had learnt in the classroom into practice. We initially tasted some different salty leaves from the salt marshes to help us determine how plants deal with salt. We then ventured into the smelly mangroves and, using sampling techniques, estimated the population of mangrove crabs in the area. Later in the day, a brave group of us waded through Botany Bay (the water was up to our waist!) with nets at the ready to capture anything that ventured too close. After about 10 minutes of collecting nothing but sea grass, we caught a fish. Success! Though we were tired by the end of the day, we all had tremendous fun learning how to accurately analyse an environment. I would highly recommend Biology and Senior Science to all junior students. And if memes have ever taught me anything, it is that ‘Physics Rules! Chemistry Rocks! & Biology Grows on you!’
Ethan O’Connor - Year 11
HISTORY INCURSIONOn Friday the 17th of March Year 8 were lucky enough to experience a flash from the past, and even got to see real life Vikings! Or so we thought…
Bear and Cat, our two hosts, brought in an array of Middle Age equipment. Helmets, swords, clothing and more, it was like travelling back in time! Whilst we were totally awed by the weapons and armour, our hosts gave us a little demonstration of what life in the Middle Ages was like. They brought up some students to try on equipment and clothing, and talked to us about the lifestyles of different people in the middle ages. One student even got stuck trying to try on a robe! We learnt about Vikings, Samurai and Knights. We talked about the clothing they wore, what weapons they used, their relationship with other social classes within their hierarchy, as well as their role in society.
We got to experience what it was like to live in the Middle Ages: try on clothes, put on helmets, ACTUALLY hold a sword! We had lots of fun, whilst learning a bucket load of new information about what it was like in the middle ages. We would like to thank the history teachers who organised this great incursion.
