CHURCHESCHANGING THE WORLD

Page 9: Mariners Impact Magazine

In 1984, the year Kenton Beshore became senior pastor of Mariners, 200

people attended the church. Now, roughly a generation later, over 20,000 people attended one of our Easter services on our four campuses -- that’s 10,000% growth! When we consider that the next 25 years could have the same amount of growth, the thought is staggering.

An entire generation of Christ-followers will stand on our shoulders. They will continue to build on the foundation we are laying for them now. As we stand today united on the threshold of a future filled with change, challenges, opportunities and growth, we have only to look to our heritage for an encouraging, irrefutable reminder – and an exciting preview – of God’s work. His unfailing anticipation of our needs and faithful provision continues to build our family and accomplish His purposes.

Through continued prayer and reliance on His leading, we endeavor to leverage and steward the resources with which God has blessed us to expand His Kingdom and reach the fullest potential of His calling.

It’s an exciting time at Mariners Church. Over the past many months, we have sensed God moving in the hearts of people here, creating dreams, and planting ideas. And people are listening. They are hearing the whisper of the Holy Spirit and taking bold steps to fulfill the

purpose God has set out for them.

Over and over we hear stories of renewal, restoration, and courageous acts of faith. Relationships are restored, brokenness is healed, and lives are lived freely in Christ. And as this happens, we are compelled to go. Go. Leave our comfort zones and go into our neighborhoods, our cities, and the world to reach out to others in need with the restoring, healing love of Jesus Christ.

As the leadership of Mariners Church prayed and sought God’s leading for our future, it was clear He has big things in mind. He has laid a foundation built on years of faith, mistakes, victories, missteps, grace, and His provision. On this foundation, He continues to lay brick after brick of courage, boldness, dreams, what-ifs, and double-fisted faith. He is telling us, “Greater things have yet to come.”

Through these pages, you will get a glimpse of the exciting, clarifying direction of Mariners Church. You’ll read about how God has worked in and through our church family and you’ll get a look at where we are headed.

We are thankful. We are ready. We are fearless.

Grace and Truth,

THE LOOPAs followers of Jesus, we are called to change the world. As a church, we believe this is accomplished by getting rooted in the Word of God, growing as disciples of Jesus, and blessing others with that with which we have been blessed.

When we look at the practical strategy of how God can use us to change the world, it resembles a loop: as God transforms us, we reach out to others, whom God transforms, and thus, with God’s grace, our culture moves toward God and will be transformed.

THE NEIGHBORWHO WAVED

“My favorite was an elderly couple around the corner who were on their hands and knees

designing a masterpiece on their driveway.”

by Nu Yang

Page 19: Mariners Impact Magazine

Although Christina and her family had lived in their Mission Viejo neighborhood for five years, they knew only a handful of people

on their street. Prompted by the “Neighbor Day” weekend series at Mariners Church Mission Viejo, where the congregation was encouraged to reach out to their neighbors by hosting a neighborhood get-together, Christina felt called to organize a Neighbor Day celebration.

“My goal was to get the community out of their homes, to meet families that had been there for a long time, and to meet new families,” she said.

But even after going door-to-door talking to people and passing out fliers to the 25 homes in the neighborhood, Christina wasn’t sure people would come. Faithfully, she and her family prayed for guidance and for their neighborhood to find real community for one day.

Finally, Neighbor Day arrived, and much to Christina’s surprise, her neighbors showed up.

Families decorated their driveways - taking part in the chalk art contest - with a summer theme. Prizes were awarded, adding to the fun, and Christina opened up her garage as a dessert station, offering root beer floats. “My favorite was an elderly couple around the corner who were on their hands and knees designing a masterpiece on their driveway,” Christina said. “Our next-door neighbor wore knee pads and worked on her driveway the entire day. She even brought out

special lighting once it got dark, so she could continue to create.”

Neighbor Day continued well into the night, and the response Christina kept hearing was the same, “We should have done this a long time ago.”

“The day could not have gone better. People came. People talked. People were laughing and were so thankful for the opportunity to be together. They did not want to leave.”

Neighbor Day left a lasting impression, and is now helping change a community. Christina went on to tell the story of a woman who lives around the corner who shared that she and her neighbor had not spoken in years because of a disagreement. Because of Neighbor Day, the woman was prompted to reach out to her neighbor with the hope of making amends. While coming home one afternoon, her husband waved to the neighbors as they pulled into their driveway. Unexpectedly, the neighbor waved back, and had a smile on his face. While it was only a wave, the woman could foresee the beginning of reconciliation. Had it not been for Neighbor Day, the woman was quite certain her husband would have never reached out.

Though exhausted by all that God had done that day, Christina was also inspired, and now encourages others to do the same. “take that step and reach out to your community,” she said. “Some people are just waiting to be invited.”

We believe God has called us to serve those in need. For over 25

years, Mariners Church has been serving in our local community

and partnering with churches around the world, coming alongside their visions for their communities. We believe the local church is the hope of the world and through the church, Jesus is changing lives – ours and the people we serve.

STEPHANIE’SSTORY

I went out of my way to avoid specific streets (and entire

neighborhoods for that matter), because I didn’t want to drive

past the homeless people gathered there.

by Nicole Maiocco

Page 27: Mariners Impact Magazine

For years, I did everything I could to steer clear of the homeless in my community. I went out of my way to avoid specific streets (and entire neighborhoods for that matter), because I didn’t want to drive past the homeless people gathered

there. Then one day, I was driving home with extra groceries in my car, and suddenly found myself driving down the very street I had worked so hard to avoid, dropping off groceries at Lighthouse Church. Immediately recognizing the need, I slowly started making more food and grocery deliveries.

After several months of “drive by drop offs,” i was asked to help plan a banquet, held monthly to feed the homeless. I quickly declined, believing I was doing enough just by delivering food. But when I was told I could share about Jesus, I knew I couldn’t say no. Obligating to a one-time commitment to share about Jesus at the banquet, I had no idea how my life would change and my heart would be captured by the people there. That one-time commitment turned into eight amazing years!

It was only after serving for all of those years that I felt like He was calling me to begin a Frontline Ministry with Mariners Church–one that focused on serving the homeless. Another volunteer, David, whom I’d met while serving at Lighthouse Church, agreed to co-lead the ministry with me. David really loves the Lord and cares deeply for the homeless, and as we continued serving meals several times a month, God laid it on our hearts to begin a free farmers’ market to feed the homeless, low income families, and motel families.

Earlier this year, we launched The Pantry, a 501 (c)(3)non-profit organization, dedicated to serving the homeless. We provide meals several times a month at Lighthouse Church, and a free farmers’ market. It’s amazing to think that God would use us to reach hundreds of people in the community of Costa Mesa.

Looking back, I can hardly believe that at one time I avoided the homeless, and that today, i can say that i truly, joyfully, serve them! I’m continually inviting others to join me in this beautiful story God is writing, because I’ve seen how He took the fears I surrendered to Him, and transformed them into a thriving ministry for His glory.

ordinary people changing the world

82% of people come to church for the first time because someone invited them. We want to be a community who cares about our neighbors, co-

workers, and the world around us. As our lives are transformed by God’s unfailing love, we invite others to experience God’s love for them.

building a network of like-minded churches who disciple people to change the world

We believe God will use the next generation to accomplish more for His Kingdom than we can ever ask or imagine. He has positioned and blessed

Mariners Church to equip and build the leaders, pastors, and churches of tomorrow. We are passionately pursuing His direction as we look to

the future of our ministry here in Orange County and beyond.

Branding is more than just a logo and a font. Branding has

the potential to tell the story of who an organization is. It can

allow those who are a part of the organization to share a common

story with those around them.

At Mariners, each one of us has our own story that is part of

God’s story. The new Mariners Church logo tells our collective stories. Mariners Church + the
