Siemens Yacht Solutions System Overview - General Specification
Each inverter is limiting the current, voltage and temperature of each motor, generator and of itself by software functions.
All components have temperature sensors and the inverter has multiple current and voltage sensors. In addition to this, an over current is detected by a hardware function at each inverter leg and the inverter is switched off immediately.
No contactors, circuit breakers or fuses are usually in the system configuration, due to high generator inductivity. Due to this inductance, the short circuit current is lower as the operating current.

Switch off the diesel engine in case of a short circuit is the lowest cost solution.
In case, the diesel engine is not allowed to be switched off, contactors are necessary in order to interrupt the short circuit . Question is whether the additional contactors are improving thereliability or even reducing it .
For hotel load an extra inverter is needed which can provide the required voltages and power values. Due to 6 pulse set up the harmonic content is very high. Filter would be appropriate

From July 01 to June 02, Siemens had 425 Inverter as an average in daily operation. Assuming each inverter had 5,000 operating hours, we had 2,125,000 operating hours. Within this time frame, we had 16 returns due to statistic failures, which leads to an MTBF of approx. 130,000h per inverter.
The motor/generator had only a few failures (approx. 5) which are statistical failures. Some more generators had problems with their internal temperature sensors (in most cases broke the signal cable within the terminal box). These failures are identified and we are working with the motor factory on an improvement, therefore we don’t need to consider these as failures determining MTBF value.
