317 Ships AdoptedThe Adopt-a-Ship Plan in which 317 United States Flag

merchant ships and school classrooms are participating, willconclude shortly.

The plan, sponsored by the Propeller Club of the UnitedStates, is made possible through the cooperation of the U.S.steamship companies and their captains. They provide shipsfor "adoption" by Americanschool students in grades fivethrough eight. In this program correspondence betweenschool classrooms and ship’s masters, officers and crewmembers is carried on during the entire academic year. Thepupils ask questions about the ship, crew, weather, cargoesand countries visited. The ship in turn sends informationconcerning these questions. The captains often visit theclassrooms and the students also visit their "adopted" shipin port.

Schools from nearly all of the 50 States participate in theprogram. There is no limit to the number of classrooms orteachers from a single school that can participate.

We gothrough the long process of becoming educated citizenswithout a sea component in our eduction."

Toward the development of a national marine policy,Goodwin proposes an education program to make theaverage citizen aware that the economic and social well-being of the U.S. is just as dependent on the aquatic en-
