Special Guest & Emcee
Hoyt SmithKDFC Radio personality
Setting his sights on a career in broadcast at an early age, KDFC Morning personality Hoyt Smith found his first opportunity on radio at 14 when a freshman in high school and joined the campus station. Later at San Diego State Hoyt signed on with that campus’
student station and a year later joined San Diego’s new NPR affiliate, KPBS-FM. There he learned the basics of classical announcing as well as news and public affairs. Simultaneously Hoyt landed a job at pop station KARL-FM in nearby Carlsbad, California and finally to adult personality AM KFMB in San Diego. On a visit home to see family in San Francisco, Smith took a tour of innovative FM station K-101 and three weeks later landed his first fulltime job. Since then he has skipped around the Bay Area radio dial working for two NBC affiliates and after a brief stint as morning host and Program Director in Portland, came back in 1984 to Adult Contemporary KLOK-FM. Brown Broadcasting bought KLOK-FM in 1987 and launched the nation’s second Smooth Jazz station, KKSF, where Hoyt hosted afternoons for nearly a dozen years. Classical music called to him again in 1999 when he was asked to host afternoons on KDFC. He has hosted the Morning Show on Classical KDFC since 2003. Readers of San Francisco Magazine have voted him “Favorite Bay Area Radio Host” four years in a row.

It’s every hurdler’s nightmare
scenario, and Monica Bi was glad
she experienced it early. Now a Tam High senior stand-
out, she looks back and laughs at
her own moment — a miscalcu-
lated timing and jump, leading to
a face-first fall onto the track dur-

joked. “But it wasn’t that bad. It
was actually kind of good that it
happened.”Bi said it was helpful in remov-
ing some nervousness — some-
thing she has rarely shown in at-
tacking the hurdles for the past
four years. A top MCAL contender
in both the 100 and 300 races this
spring, Bi is known not just for her
consistent performance, but also
her bubbly, fun-loving personality
— even in the tensest of races.

Alasdair Neale,Music Director
There’s nothing like experiencing live classical music played by our Marin Symphony under the leadership of Maestro Alasdair Neale. This is his 14th season leading our orchestra and he has taken the musicians progressively to higher levels of excellence over the past decade. He’s one of the leading Bay Area conductors and a champion of youth education initiatives. Maestro Neale has made appearances on many of the world’s stages with renowned orchestras and soloists.
Music Director Alasdair Neale began his tenure as Music Director of the Marin Symphony in 2001. He also holds the positions of Music Director of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and Principal Guest Conductor of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Neale’s appointment with the Marin Symphony followed 12 years as Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra. During that time he conducted both orchestras in hundreds of critically acclaimed concerts both here and abroad. In 1999, he substituted for an ailing Michael Tilson Thomas, conducting the
San Francisco Symphony in widely praised performances of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony in Germany. His most recent appearance with that orchestra was in February 2007 when he replaced an indisposed Carlos Kalmar to lead the San Francisco Symphony in successful subscription performances.
In his twenty years as Music Director of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, Mr. Neale has propelled this festival to national status: it is now the largest privately funded free admission symphony in America. He has brought many celebrated guest artists to these annual events.
In March 2002, to enthusiastically positive reviews, Mr. Neale collaborated with director Peter Sellars and composer John Adams to open the Adelaide Festival with a production of the opera El Niño. In April 1994, he conducted the San Francisco Symphony in the world premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis’ Colored Field, featuring English horn player Julie Ann Giacobassi.
In 1993, the American Symphony Orchestra League named him a Leonard Bernstein American Conducting Fellow, and he led the New Jersey Symphony in a concert at the League’s annual conference.
Alasdair Neale maintains a most active guest conducting schedule, both nationally and internationally. His recordings have been released by Arco/Decca and New World Records.
Alasdair Neale holds a Bachelor’s degree from Cambridge University and a Master’s from Yale University, where his principal teacher was Otto-Werner Mueller. He lives in San Francisco.

Music isn’t the only thing moving outdoors on the Marin Civic Center campus. Explore and enjoy the recent enhancements to the new disabled-accessible plaza in front of the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium, which make it much easier to move around. And there are more upgrades on the way. In the next few years, you’ll see better sidewalks, bus stops, bike lanes and aesthetic accents along Civic Center Drive as we prepare for the new SMART train.
You can also look forward to exciting changes from another Civic Center partner, the Marin County Farmers Market, as its staff works on plans for a permanent site for the market.
All of these moves are designed to complete the mission of Frank Lloyd Wright, the famed architect who designed our National Historic Landmark.
Even after the Pops concert ends, the sound of change at the Civic Center will be sweet music to our community.
Congratulations to Marin Symphony for 62-plus years of outstanding performances! The County of Marin is proud to be a sponsor of this Pops concert.

Marin Symphony Youth and Music Education Programs are at the heart of our mission to foster the dreams and aspirations of young musicians. Exposing young people early and continuing to engage them is one of the best ways to ensure that the next generation develops a love of music. Multiple programs are designed to teach and inspire both young musicians and future concert goers.
Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra has been providing gifted young musicians ages 12 -18 an opportunity to be a part of our orchestra community since 1954. Directed and conducted by Ann Krinitsky, the orchestra performs winter and spring concerts and special Sit-In concerts at local schools, where younger students sit amidst the Youth Orchestra during the performance.
Marin Symphony Crescendo is designed for intermediate students, teaching young musicians standard orchestral ensemble techniques and musicianship. Led by Anne Lerner-Wright, the program is a stepping stone to the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra.

PROGRAM NOTES
HollywoodcomposerRon Ramin
Composer and 17 year Mill Valley resident Ron Ramin has composed the musical scores for more
than 250 hours of US network television, including 20 prime-time series and more than 30 original movies/miniseries. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Ramin earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and studied composition and orchestration with Milton Babbitt. Upon graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a film composer. He has won a CableACE Award and received an EMMY nomination for his scores.
Mr. Ramin describes “Greetings!” as a fanfare for orchestra. “My intended goal was to write a symphonic work that is audience friendly and welcomes the listener to the concert hall in a joyous and rousing manner.”
Youth in Arts, `Til Dawn
`Til Dawn, Youth in Arts A Cappella ensemble is an advanced vocal music program for motivated young artists. `Til Dawn celebrates the value of the arts, encourages positive messages about meaningful social issues, and inspires children of all ages. The group performs a mix of rock, pop, blues, jazz and soul standards and contemporary hits, in addition to original songs by group members.
The group rehearses twice a week at Youth in Arts and participates in three weekend retreats throughout the year. They maintain an extensive year-round performance schedule, singing at schools, community events and charitable benefits. `Til Dawn is featured in the winter “Sing Out!” which combines the current company along with esteemed alumni. In June `Til Dawn has a full length concert to highlight each of the individual students and celebrate the seniors.
Auditions for `Til Dawn are held each May for students entering 9th-12th grade. `Til Dawn is a tuition-based program with scholarships available.
`Til Dawn released its first CD in 1995 entitled Get Motivated Baby. The group’s second album in 2000, In Toon, was runner up for Best High School Recording from the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARA). Songs in the Key of AWESOME (2004) won two CARA awards, one for Best High School Album and the second for Best High School Solo. The `Til Dawn CD Crescendo was released in December 2009, was nominated for Best High School Album and won Best High School Solo (Haley Keagan for “Til It Happens”). Members of `Til Dawn receive hundreds of hours of instruction and mentorship each year from Director Austin Willacy. Austin provides not only vocal training and direction, but also leads `Til Dawn members in discussions and retreats that build the group’s cohesion as well as the critical thinking and interpersonal skills of each member.
Austin is a professional singer and songwriter who performs and records both solo and with Tommy Boy/Warner Bros. artists The House Jacks. `Til Dawn members often have opportunities to see Austin perform with the House Jacks or his own band. Most years `Til Dawn will open for the House Jacks in at least one professional performance.

This wine is the perfect palate cleanser as you nibble on cheese and crackers or a summer salad with nectarine wedges and goat cheese. Take your shoes off and get comfortable while enjoying a glass of Mambo Rose.
Pair this wine with grilled chicken and grilled pineapple rings alongside some rice pilaf and green beans, Grandma’s meatloaf with sautéed carrots, mashed potatoes and gravy, or a grown-up grilled cheese sandwich with rye bread and smoked gruyere cheese with bacon. The sum of all of the
parts makes a fantastic red blend to enjoy on any occasion.
