Attention Teens - Take Advantage of Opportunities!
State 4-H Council Regional Representative
The Missouri State 4-H Council is an elected body of youth from 4-H who serve for one year. Council mem-bers help plan and carry out State 4-H Congress and 4-H Teen Conference. They also represent Missouri 4-H at national, regional, and state events. Any 4-H members, age 14-17 on Jan. 1, 2017 may apply to be a candi-date for regional representative. Four youth from each Extension region are elected each year.
Regional Representatives are selected through the following process.
January—Eligible youth submit a Regional Representatives Application form and letter to your county
extension office. Deadline is January 31.
February—Applications and recommendation forms are sent to the Regional Committee and a schedule
for the regional interviews will be sent to applicants.
March—Interviews are held in each region. All applicants must attend. Three to 9 candidates will be selected to run for East Central Regional Representative.
June 1-3—State 4-H Congress—candidates will be introduced at regional meetings. Candidates will give campaign speeches and regional elections will be held. Installation of new members will take place the final morning of State 4-H Congress.
Applications can be found at: http://4h.missouri.edu/missouri-4h-council.aspx
Missouri State 4-H Recognition Awards
Teens, ages 14-18, by January 1, 2017 may submit a Level III award application to be recognized as a State Excellence award winner and be eligible to attend National 4-H Congress. Recognition Award applications are to be submitted to your county extension office by January 31 and will then be forwarded to the regional committee. Each applicant must attend a personal interview in March. Up to 8 candidates from each region will be sent to state. The top 35-40 applicants state-wide are then selected to interview at the state level. The top 20 of these finalists are selected to attend National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia in November 2017 as Missouri 4-H delegates.
Be a 4-H Member in Good Standing!
4-H club members are recognized for setting and com-pleting goals each year. At a minimum, a 4-H member should complete the following. Clubs may have addi-tional requirements so make sure you also have your club guidelines.
Attend a majority of your club meetings.
Enroll in at least one project and finish it. This in-cludes attending a majority of project meetings, working on project goals, keeping records on a pro-ject.
Demonstrate a skill learned or knowledge gained by making a handmade item, exhibiting a project or project animal at a show or fair; presenting a speech, report or demonstration in a group setting such as a club or project meeting.
When a 4-H club member meets these requirements, they are recognized for “completing a year of 4-H mem-bership” and are a “member in good standing”.
Missouri 4-H Mannequin Challenge
Missouri 4-H and FilmFest invite 4-H clubs to share a short Mannequin Challenge video showing 4-H club meetings where youth experience:
Safety—physical safety, emotional safety and inclu-sive practices
Support—welcoming, active learning, encourage-ment and skill-building
Interaction—cooperative learning and leadership opportunities
Engagement—higher order thinking skills through choice, planning and reflection
What is a Mannequin Challenge? The Man-nequin Challenge is a viral Internet video trend where people remain frozen in action like manne-quins while a short video is recorded. Do a search for #mannequinchallenge on your favorite social media site to learn more!
Eligibility: Must have 5 or m ore m em bers in your club to submit one video.

Homemade Bird Feed Suet Cups
You will need
Lard or suet
String
Empty, clean yogurt cups or disposable cups
Wild bird seed, oats, breadcrumbs, sultanas, currants, unsalted peanuts (you don’t need all of these, a mixture of any is fine)
Directions
First you need to mix your dry ingredients in a bowl. We’ve found that a ratio of about 2 parts dry to 1 part lard/suet works well.
Melt the lard or suet in a saucepan, then add to your dry ingredients and stir until everything is well mixed. Supervise children very carefully while doing this, I let mine do some mixing but handle the heating and pouring myself to avoid any risk of burns.
Make a small hole in the bottom of a yoghurt pot or cup and thread through a length of string. Leave about 10cm at one end and 20cm at the other.
Fill the pot with your food mixture, making sure to pack it down quite tightly, then put it in the fridge to set – this can take quite a while so we tend to leave ours overnight.
When the mixture is set you can cut away the pot – this can be a bit fiddly so it’s best left to the adults and older children. Have some kitchen roll handy too, you’ll get quite greasy!
Tie a large knot in the shorter piece of string (this will be the bottom) and use the string at the other end to hang it up outdoors. Remember to position your feeders where you can see them from the house and out of the reach of cats.
