innovation workshopAt the beginning of our project we held a 2 week long innovation workshop where we practiced various creativity techniques and system analysis to kickoff our research.
megatrendsWorking trough different megatrends we tried to find out which direction we want to take on as a group. From a broader range of mega-trends we picked the 3 following.
area to tackle
transformationfusion
culturalidentity
sustainabilityecology
To cater for Chinese needs we had to understand a variety of requirements first.
requirements
According to our findings in numbers - China was the logical choice for our setting.
data mining
bathroom sizes 1,3m2 - 2m2
Chengdu tier 2 city
rising private consumption
floorplans
In order to understand our chinese target segment better, we looked up living standards, income, Chinese administration standards for cities and more.
Checking the floorplans from small to bigger apartment sizes. Local sources via Ascott Inter-national.

persona : chun li
As a typical rural migrant, Chun Li moved from the countryside to Chengdu.
There she works as an administrative staffmember in a small company earning
RMB 4.000 per month (ca. $ 600). Believes that with hard work she can support
herself and her family. Saves half of her income for an apartment of her own
because she wants to settle down in Chengdu and get married soon.
After the setting and persona became tangible for us, we started to create user scenarios
user scenarios
invention of paper
Paperfolding originated in China shortly after the invention of paper. In contrast to Japanese Origami, Chinese paperfolding focused not on animalistic visualisation but everyday products.
chinese cultureTradition and cultural heritage have always been of high significance within Chinese soci-ety, to iterate is to honor.
We used small scale prototypes to find a basic form first and original size prototypes to figure out feasibility.
prototypes
materialFor our third requirement, we had to find ma-terials which were sustainable yet provided the specific properties for a bathroom.cork tyvek
lantern
bathtub
The paper lantern is an atmospheric illuminant. Pulling unfolds it and dims the light. A colour-transition from red to blue as inspired by cultural customs, serves as a reminder to watch the time while showering.
An easy and foldable setup lets the tub pop up on demand. The angular head area and the soft material - plates of cork, shrink-wrapped between Tyvek - works as a cushion and adheres to human ergonomics.
tap + showerhead
faucet
Combines tap, showerhead and Rainshower in one product. This is enabled by easy height adjustment and the fan-like setup.
The bamboo inspired faucet features an intuitiv handling. Sliding the control element up and down regulates the temperature. Rotating it controls the watervolume.
paraventThe Paravent combines room divider and shower curtain. With the integrated LED-Stripes it trans-forms into an atmospheric light source, similar to a light flooded bamboo grove.
storage shelf + towel rack
sink
Based on a classic fan, the shelf serves as an adaptable and space saving storage space that doubles as a towel rack without its Tyvek cover.
Similar to the bath tub, the sink is foldable to create space for showering or when tak-ing a bath in the tub.

In addition to my research, I took the opportunity to renovate my frontroom to gain further insights. From this experience I identified three steps as a necessity for a sucesfull home improvement endeavour.

flexibility 360° light
october 2014
The goal was to create an illuminant, which is based on the latest LED-technology or innovates on top of it.
briefingAfter an extensive research we focused on flexible LED-Tubes. We quickly found, that although the current tech promises flexible LED-Tubes in lots of shapes and colors, the light output is just on one side of the tube.
research
A flexible LED-lamp which lets the user experience the involved technology in a playful way and a unique visual appearance
core idea
3rdPlace
The LED-strip is arranged over 360° along the diameter of the carrier tube
The tube is made from “new PVC” and works as a diffusor, to achieve a continous light output
The 3mm iron wire acts as the core and gives stability and flexibility
package
To reinforce the impression of flexibility, we settled with a variety of knots and chaotic clutters for the optic proposal.
moods
packagingEasy to store and ship, parcel includes an instruction for various knots.
Molto Luce Nodo is a single tube which can be knotted, bent and combined with other tubes.

understandIn order to simplify the system I had to understand how the Leitner System works.Out of this effort the three points above offered a good lever to start improvements.
briefingI worked independently on this project to create a visual and functional redesign of the existing graphical user interface for Leitner Ropeways. All in accordance with an analog interface. The digital interface should respond to and depict the analog mechanics. Heavy focus on continuity and a higher design quality as the existing solution.
structure
- clean hierarchy- less popups
continuity
- element positions- color themes
usability
- tangible icons- feedback
structureAlready a grown system and bloated with all kinds of pop ups. I tried to slim down the struc-ture and do away with unnecessary pop ups
icons feedbackgeneral approachAfter figuring out how to tone down the loaded structure, the next step was to create themes which adhere to the Leitner Corporate Identity. The difficulty with general symbolism was to figure out how to create new elements while keeping some resemblance for existing users.
interface trendsTrend analysis in the fields gaming, apps and lifestyle showed 3 major trends we wanted to combine with Leitner’s existing system.

show to tellTo provide the client with a good understanding, Jenny and I worked together to provide an animated version aswell.

DDT 2 MOTORCYCLES 5th term
individual project: practizing motorcycles in prepartation for cooperation with KTM7
taskAs preparation for our ongoing KTM coop-eration, we practised the analog and digital visualisation of motorcycles and frames.
supervisorsDI. Andreas Martin, DI. Marc Ischepp
intentI tried to incorporate some ideas for my concept and took the liberty to experiment with shapes and accessories.
