Design FunDaMental 1
During this course I learned the importance of process within design. Through repetition, with many tiral and errors, something beautiful is made through unin-tentional moves I have made in the process of my projects. In this project, I used a garlic crusher as the center of this form and material analysis. Through process of discovery and ma-nipulation of material, I was able to understand and clearly repre-sent the tool in its final presen-tation in a material manipulated by the tool.

On this project, we were assigned to pick any site to analyze. I picked a park right next to where I grew up in Japan. Near the park, currently there are no green space so I incorporated a huge green space for the users to enjoy. This project included three diagrams, a rendered top view, a section cut, and a rendered perspective.

In this course, I learned the basics of model making for environmental design and manipulation of the landform. Part of the assignment was to create landscapes using assigned adjectives. With the different modeling techniques, I created basic cardboard models to scaled vegetated models showing my ideas in detail.

In this model, I designed a park that was located between a school and a library along the Mississippi river. With inspiration from Minnesota’s state grain, wild rice, I created an educational park where students and other users can walk through and learn about the connection between wild rice and the Mississippi River.

The City of Esmeralda, a city of network of canls and streets intersecting each other. For this project, I worked with hree different rectilinear forms made out of white foam boards. I designed above ground which consist a network of pathways. The below ground space was a network of secret passageways.

maCalesteR gaRDen anD plaza fall 2014Individual Work
Macalester College is a small private college located in St. Paul, MN. In this project, I designed Macalester’s garden and plaza. I learned the different typology between garden and plaza, how it serves the users. The garden and the plaza is located right next the art center and the humanities building. Currently not many people spend significant time on the site. So I wanted to design a place where students can occupy longer. In both designs, I focused on using water as a design element to create a relaxing place for students. Both features a fountain and reflction pool. The reflection pool will help the art students to get inspirations.

adjacent to the new Vikings stadium is a 4.2 acre lot that will be the iconic 21st Century park. Designers were called to design a park that attracts visitors from all of the world, innovative, and create all seasons public space. It is a perfect opportunity to create a park that represents Minneapolis and a place where people can connect to Minneapolis. In my design, I created a park that is functional to both humans and habitat. The park provides food source for both humans and habitats. It features an apple orchard, garden attracting pollinators, and edible garden. Design inspiration came from the design of the Viking’s stadium, shattered ice.
