Courage! it is I! Do not be afraid!'

In reality we normally turn to God especially in the time of difficulty. but we must learn to turn to God at all time. In the first reading we hear Prophet Elijah battled for idolatry. Now he

overcomes with fear then he runs into hiding. He hears the voice of God telling him to go to mountain Herob, there he will meet God. On the mountain he finds that God is not in the

earthquake, or the fire, or the storm, but in a gentle breeze. when a breeze arrives, he covers his face for he knows God is present.

In today's gospel, Peter steps out of his boat into the troubled waters of life. Feeling the sudden force of the wind, he is afraid, experienced fisherman though he is. We can identify with Peter as we recall times of discouragement, disappointment, or frustration, when knew the need to

move forward and yet were hopelessly stuck.

Peter in storm's violence, hears Jesus' gentle reproach about his doubt and lack of faith. This same gentleness is in God's word that echoes in our hearts in difficult moments. Instead of

listening to our panic, our fear and our doubts, let us tune in to the gentle, personal, encouraging word that God is speaking in our hearts saying;' Courage! it is I! Do not be afraid! '

We need to hear a voice of peace, that can make us feel at peace with ourselves. We hear from

the first reading Prophet Elijah on the holy mountain participate on the divine word of God not come in the thunder, or fire or earthquake or even in the mighty wind but in the gentleness

breezes. Silent is the place God is most easily heard. A voice that speaks of peace.....his help is near to those who fear him.

Now picture Peter, his boat tossed on the stormy sea. He catches a glimpse of the Lord he can walk on water. But once he looks at the waves he begins to sink. Then the Lord's hand reaches

out to save him. The story of Jesus, watching from on high, and coming to the storm-tossed boat of the disciples, is a source of great hope for the church in these troubled times. Look only

at the problems and we sink but look at Jesus with focus and everything is possible.

And in what the gospel of Matthew today relates is clearly symbolic. The boat refers to the church and the disciples are beaten by the winds and waves of persecution. Jesus is not with

them physically; he is in heaven, praying to the Father. However, in the hour of need he comes to them, and with his presence calms their fears and brings them peace. It also refers Peter's

case for his failure during the Passion, and his restoration after the resurrection and Peter rep-resents the typical disciple, caught between faith and doubt. Jesus' rebuke saying' Man of little faith! why did you doubt? is directed at us, who often start out courageously only to lose heart

when faced with a crisis. As we learn from Prophet Elijah his battle against idolatry. Now run for his life, he takes refuge in a cave where he is taught that God's way are not man's ways. God's

approach is as gentle as a breeze.

Fear is the opposition of faith. Prayer helps to build faith and reduce fear by increasing our trust in God. The more we pray, the less we fear. Peter is the example of our imperfect faith he even

denied the Lord, but he is also an example for us to follow. When he was sinking, he put his trust in Jesus and called out to him, when we put our trust in Jesus to save us, he holds us ups

and he sustains us through our most difficult times.

Let us call out to him in times of trouble and crisis and he says to us, Courage! It is I ! Do not be afraid!.

Saturday 15th August. we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption 3pm - the rosary of Aotearoa in the church. The purpose of the Rosary event is, ''The call to Rosary '' on Our Lady's feast Day, to Pray that the Abortion Bill be overturned, and the End of Life-Euthanasia Bill not receive the required number of votes to legislate. The intention indeed honours Our Lady.

5pm - evening mass. This will be followed by a shared meal in the hall .

NOTE: Next Sunday’s mass is the usual Sunday mass and we are expected to go to mass again. The Saturday night mass is not a vigil for the Sunday. And because it is such an important day the feast is not Sundayised.

Sid McCann, died last Sunday in Napier. Sid and Joy were long time parishioners at Maria As-

sumpta. May he rest in peace. Next Sunday 16th, there will be only one mass at 10am.

St Vincent de Paul Foodbank

The Society of St Vincent de Paul thanks parishioners for your ongoing

support. Our foodbank is experiencing a steady demand and we espe-cially need canned foods of all sorts. Food donations can be left in the

basket at the back of the church before Mass on Sundays.

It's very cold and we urgently need winter clothing and bedding which along with household items can be donated at the Ellice Road or Beach Haven shops during shop hours. The Beach Haven Shop is in particular need of volunteers, Are you able to give half a day once a month to as-sist? If you wish to assist us more, or if you know of someone needing assistance, or you would like someone to collect donations of food or

clothing, please contact either Chris (021 107 2342), Charles (022 0242 753), or the Beach Haven Shop (482 3017).
