  • 2 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2017

Dear members and friends of MSBCA,

    The past month of October has seen many w o n d e r f u l events. First off, we celebrated

Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, on Saturday, October 14th, with great style, décor, food and music. This was the first major event of the new Board and what an event to usher in the new year! Kudos to Peter Chai, the lead organizer for Diwali, the organizing committee and all volunteers for a job truly well done. From the ceremonial lighting of the candles to the vibrant Bollywood style dances and fashion show, the elements of Indian culture brightly shone in our multi-cultural and multi-ethnic community.

The next weekend, we held a teamwork workshop lectured by Dr. Lionel Laroche. My personal experience was very positive and intellectually enriching. Lionel touched upon many scenarios, opportunities and challenges posed by collectivism and individualism in day-to-day work.

We also held a puppet workshop, where parents and children could learn cool shadow puppet techniques from our guest instructor Ms. Wendy Passmore-Godfrey. They created their own shadow puppets featuring Southeast Asian and Canadian cultural elements, and got to be a part of a larger community project across Canada, the Gray Jay story.

Moving forward, it looks like the month of November will see the creation of two brand new cooking classes: Indian-style “Masala Spice” on Sunday, November 5th led by Charan Kaur and pizza-making for

families on Sunday, November 12th led by Sandy Chan.

Recently, I had attended Linda Yap’s newly started Mind Health Exercise classes with Membership Director, Emily Teoh and a few other friends. In many cultures, meditation, self-reflection and discussion are building blocks leading to self-cultivation. Linda’s experience as a nurse in Singapore and a lifelong volunteer brings to our community the teachings of soft skills.

I want to say that, just as we’ve seen recent collaborations between MSBCA and guest lecturers/instructors from fellow community networks, it is equally important to look within, promote our members’ talents and leadership, and encourage everyone to engage in activity groups that they’ll enjoy. Our Funding Guide for Members 2017 is a good start to read for anyone interested in forming new activity groups.

    Story by Charan Kaur

November 5th was a day which I was looking forward to introducing a masalah

spice cooking class. When the day got much nearer, I had "cold feet" and thought, "how I will be able to do it all myself". But little did I know, everything happened so smoothly that I went home feeling so happy that I had acomplished my first cooking class with so much help. My heartfelt thanks to all who attended and helped. I was also so happy everyone enjoyed delicious indian food.

Anyone who had missed it and wants the recipe. Please contact me.

What a wonderful evening celebrating the Festival of Lights with friends and family. This was my first MSBCA Diwali function and I was thoroughly impressed . The decor was beautiful, the music was lively, the food was delicious and the activities were entertaining. It truly felt like a Diwali celebration. The rangoli competition brought out fun and creativity in everyone.

The fashion show featured some beautiful outfits, the sari contest was entertaining and the Bollywood dancing had everyone on their feet. The committee, volunteers and participants should be commended on making this evening fun and memorable. Thank you again for your hard work and commitment and we look forward to celebrating again.

  • 12 - MSBCA NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2017

Saturday, November 25, 8 PMDark skies are important to us and we would like to share dark skies with you.

In the sky - Check out the vain and boastful queen of the northern sky Cassiopeia under a sliver of a moon.

***Open House - Gates open at 8:00pm and the event runs until 11:00pm Admission $30 (all proceeds go towards Rothney Astrophysical Observatory educational programs)The RAO is located on hwy 22, east side of the hwy, 2.4 km south of the hwy22 and hwy 22X interchange. At every open house we feature a ‘what’s up’ in the sky’ presentation and our telescopes operating with astronomers ready to answer your questions. Bring your flashlight and dress for the weather.

    • The RAO will be opens to the public during open house events. During the rest of the month we conduct school and youth group programming.

    • Open House events are a drop in, there is no requirement to pre-register.

    • Gates open at 8pm until 11pm.• Entrance fee: $30 per car. All proceeds go towards our

educational programming. We welcome these donations to our educational programs. Please note that the entrance fee to open house events is now $30 per car effective at the September, 2017 open house. The RAO provides programs that explore sky science, light, optics and space exploration. The RAO also offers programming for youth groups including Scouts and Guides. We are your guide to the universe with programs that are offered during the day or in the evening and your support is greatly appreciated.

    • We accept cash, debit, or credit.• Parking is limited and we encourage you to carpool.• When you arrive at the observatory, please follow directions

from parking attendants.• Talks are held inside the interpretive centre classroom and

there may be outdoor sky tours if the weather permits.• Please, please, please slow down and watch your step while

outside on the observatory grounds. The site is very dark and there several places where there is uneven ground. Take your time and watch your step.

    • We have a small giftshop which sells packaged snacks, pop and water.

    • The observatory is wheelchair accessible, however, please be advised there is uneven ground, limited parking and unlit areas.

    • Observing with the telescopes depends on the weather. The telescopes see the same light as you. If there are clouds in the sky or too much humidity we are not able to use the telescopes. You can check our all sky camera before you head out to the observatory. It is located on the home page of this website and it provides current observing conditions.

    • Telescopes are in the observatory buildings as well as on the terrace on the south side of the interpretive centre. Looking through a telescope is a fine art. Please only use your eyes and do not touch the telescopes. A slight touch on a telescope will change its alignment. Talk with astronomers about what you can see is in the telescope and what you should be looking for, we love your questions.

    • There is No flash photography inside the domes.• Children are welcome. The event is open to families and people

of all ages. The telescope viewing and activities are geared towards children eight years old and up. Please note that the ground and walkways are very uneven so it is difficult to maneuver a stroller.

    • Flashlights are welcome, red is preferred which allows you to maintain your night vision and does not affect the telescopes. If you do have a white light flashlight, we ask that you try your best to keep the light on the ground. The bright light of a flashlight aimed at someone’s eyes in the dark can be painful and also the bright light makes it difficult to see through the telescopes.

    • If you have any questions or concerns during the open house, please bring them to the front desk located in the Interpretive Centre and we will do our best to assist you.

    • The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is owned and operated by the University of Calgary. The observatory site is private land and we are only open to the public during the posted event times.

The MSBCA hosted and partnered with the Asian Professional Network of Calgary in their second of a three part series, of career advancement workshops held in 2017, that has been specifically tailored for people of South East Asian descent. The Teamwork Workshop, facilitated by Dr. Lionel Laroche, a world-renowned subject matter expert in cultural diversity training, was generously hosted by the MSBCA at its association premises on October 21, 2017.

Over 20 eager participants including half a dozen members of the MSBCA participated in the half-day workshop.  The workshop participants learnt that combinations of skill, expertise and experience in an effective team are infinite. But what is often overlooked and rarely focused on are the strengths and weaknesses of teams on a cultural and heritage level especially in Canada.  Dr. Laroche’s workshop demonstrated that by focusing, understanding, and developing team members from collective- and individual-based societies can be the subtle difference between success and failure.

The MSBCA is proud of its contribution of support to other community based organizations’ development programs and looks forward in the future to support other partnering opportunities with organizations like the Asian Professional Network of Calgary to promote, enhance and strengthen our community and Association members.
