SYMPHONY IN COLOR

Students at Smith Fine Arts Academy recently participated in an art con-test sponsored by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra entitled, “Symphony In Color”. In this con-test, art teachers were sent record-ings of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra performing songs in their Discovery Concert Series (the same music fourth grade students were treated to in their recent field trip to the Symphony).

Art teachers selected music from this slate, and played this classical music while students listened and created

SYMPHONY, continued

art based on what they were experi-encing as well as the context of the music outlined in the curriculum guide. From the art that was creat-ed by students, each school was al-lowed to select 6 entries, 7 if a spe-cial education student was included. Of course we elected to participate, since we already enjoy doing this in our art classes at Smith Fine Arts Academy!

Of the more than 23,000 students across the state of Indiana who par-ticipated in the “Symphony In Color” Contest, 100 Finalists were selected by a highly-regarded and highly-qualified panel of art judges. Of those 100 Finalists (now on display at the Indianapolis Symphony Or-chestra and soon to be moved to the Indiana State Museum), the top 35 entries were designated as Gold Rib-bon Winners. These students, their families, and their art teachers will be treated to a Symphony Tea and Awards Ceremony on March 10th. Congratulations to ALL students at Smith Fine Arts Academy who partic-ipated in the “Symphony In Color” Art Contest. A special congratula-tions to the following students, whose exceptional artwork was se-lected to represent Smith Fine Arts Academy:

Grace Wert (Third grade)

Sophia Ramey (Third grade)

Lane Swearingen (Second grade)--Top 100 Finalist

Gavin Nelson (Fourth grade)--Top 100 Finalist

Remington Casse (First grade)--Top 100 Finalist, Gold Ribbon Winner

Ainsley McCary (Second grade)--Top 100 Finalist, Gold Ribbon Winner

Alexis Tackett (Fourth grade)--Top 100 Finalist, Gold Ribbon Winner

KIDS HEART

CHALLENGE RESULTS

We have completed our KIDS HEART CHALLENGE fundraiser event for 2019 and have raised $2,348.80! We’ve had a great time JUMPING ROPE, DANCING, SHOOTING BASKETBALLS, and RUNNING OUR NINJA HEART WARRIOR OBSTACLE COURSE to help those with special hearts! Even though we have wrapped up our event, we have been offered an op-portunity for our school to receive an additional $300 for a little extra effort!

If we can get 150 more of our stu-dents to just register online and take the Challenge (we already have 27) we will be awarded $300 in additional US Games Certificates to purchase PE equipment! Plus, the top classroom, with the most students taking the challenge, will receive a $25 Amazon Gift card and recess bag! NO addi-tional donations need to be made…simply register and take the CHAL-LENGE! Ask your student about Finn and how they can be a heart warrior for kids like him! By registering online, it becomes easy for you and your donors to raise donations for the mission of the American Heart Associ-ation, if you choose. Your student will pick a health challenge, like drinking more water, getting additional exer-cise, or doing a good deed (and will earn a wristband!).

NOTES FROM THE

NURSE

The flu is still here! If you have not had your child vaccinated this flu season, we encourage you to do so. Please remember that prevention is the key to stopping the spread of this virus.

We also would like to remind you that, if your child has a tem-perature of 100 degrees or high-er, he/she will not be permitted to stay at school. Students must be fever free for 24 hours with-out medication to return to school. They must also be vom-iting and diarrhea free for 24 hours to come to school.

Please talk to your children about hand washing and its im-portance.

SPRING BREAK

Smith Fine Arts Academy will be closed March 25th - March 29th for Spring Break. Classes will resume on Monday, April 1st. Everyone have a safe and enjoyable relaxing week off from school.
