MARCH 2018
Hello members they say time flies when you are having fun. Its now February and our Annual Reports go out this week with our Quarterly Newsletter.
The Board of Enquiry into RSL Fund Raising etc has been completed and the recommendations published. The report is available on the internet. Susan our Honorary Secretary continues to do a great job and as you will see when you read her column she is on top of everything. Lisa and Sue are a great combination with the minutes of each Committee or General meeting completed within several days of those meetings. Still no news on our plan to invest $4.2M with Ethinvest as the State Branch is still looking at the role of its Custodian. This is costing us and some other sub-Branch's a considerable amount as we are only getting 2% from the bank. Ethinvest has estimated a return of 5 to 7% which on the $4,2M from the sale is a considerable amount lost. Especially now we are not receiving rents from the Club and shops. We are finalising the registration of Kevin Hagan as the incoming Trustee replacing the late Noel Mayes. This involves a lot of work including the change of Trustees for the five properties and the investments with the RSL Custodian. Our solicitor Mark Bowen is currently attending to these matters. I would also like to thank David Jeffrey for his assistance as a Justice of the Peace witnessing all of the documents and coming in to complete some forms.
The future of the sub-Branch is another issue we will soon have to consider once the Club is demolished. I have no doubt we will be able to secure suitable alternative accommodation in the Junction when this takes place. Mr. Phil Jones has completed our Annual audit and the financial statements and notes are published in the Annual Report going out with this Newsletter. He provided a comprehensive report to the Committee on 5th February. All good and we continue to be in a strong financial position. With the passing of Noel Mayes who served as a Trustee and Vice President for a number of years we will be holding an election for one committeeman at the AGM 0n the 18th March. Nominations will be called for from the floor and will have to have a seconder and a secret ballot may have to take place, We will have our Terry Healy present to oversee the election State Branch is currently restructuring and has issued a 17 page paper for comment. It was discussed at length last Monday evening at our monthly Committee meeting and all Committee have been asked to peruse it and any comments will be collated by the Secretary and be forwarded to State Branch as a joint response. State Branch is also looking at pooling funds in some way to assist needy sub-Branches and run there State Branch. Last year we donated over have our income to these worthy causes..
SUB-BRANCH PRESIDENT’S REPORT - Bill Harrigan
Hello Members, A special thankyou to those Affiliates who responded to requests for assis-tance to the Women’s Auxiliary at the December Quarterly Meeting. Your help was much
appreciated. Unfortunately, on Boxing Day a severe storm hit Laurieton causing water damage at the Beach Haven units and hail damage to the units at Lake St. A plumber had to be called to apartments at Beach Haven as well as a carpet company to dry out carpets. Repairs to gar-age windows and fly screens at Lake St have been imple-mented and an insurance claim will be lodged.
Lisa and I have paid capitation fees for members and reminder letters will be sent to any un-financial members. The auditors have been in last week to finalise statements for the Annual Report. Dates have been given to the function officer for the Quarterly meetings. Many members attended the funeral of John Boulton. May he Rest in Peace. I also attended the funeral of sub-Branch member George Caruana on Thursday 8th February.
SUB-BRANCH SECRETARY’S REPORT - Sue Welman
FROM THE SECRETARY/TREASURER OF THE WOMEN’S AUXILIARY
A Memory of Times Past This year 2018 marks the 79th year of the BJW RSL Women’s Auxiliary, which commenced in 1939 under the
leadership of Mrs M. Fenton our Inaugural President. 1989 was the 50th Anniversary of our auxiliary and sadly it was also the year that Mrs Elsie Johnson passed away. Elsie was Patroness and life-member of our branch when she died at 94 years of age. A source of pride for Elsie was that her five sons and two grandsons all served in the military and were members of our club and sub branch. Indeed, the President of our Sub Branch on the 50th Anniversary was her son Mr W ( Bill ) Johnson. The 50th anniversary celebration was a grand affair. Madame President Mary Hobson welcomed guests from State Branch and local branches from Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee, City of Sydney, Kensington Malabar, Maroubra, Matraville, North Bondi, Randwick and Wentworthville. The auditorium had been handsomely decorated with floral arrangements on all the tables in blue and gold. A two-tiered birthday cake had been baked and iced in the same colours by Mr Stan Davies who many of our older members will remember well. Every lady was presented with an orchid shoulder spray and eleven floral displays were given as lucky door prizes. Mr Bill Johnson emceed with his usual professional manner and all agreed it had been a night to remember. (Ms) Barbara Urquhart Secretary - Treasurer BJW RSL Women’s Auxiliary

FROM THE WELFARE OFFICER
Hi Everyone, Trust the New Year is treating you well so far. Sadly, as most of us already know, we lost three good members towards the end of last year & early this year; John Boulton, George Caruana and Noel Mayes. In late December, then again in January, I had several short stints in hospital with cataract & membrane problems, so my apologies for not doing too much Welfare of late. Towards the end of last year several of us from the Eastern Sydney area went to a Welfare & Pensions conference where we received a pretty good briefing on the latest from DVA and Centrelink. So come & see me if you have any queries and I should at least be able to point you in the right direction.
KEITH KENT: Vince Buchan and I had a great visit recently with club member, Keith Kent—what an interesting person. The oldest student from Sydney High School, they have officially described him as “A Distinguished, Living Treasure”. Keith also has an outstanding work record.
Having been with the railways for over 40 years he began on the big Steam Locos, then progressed to Diesel and later Electric Trains. Among many interesting things Keith told us, the big steam engines known as the 38 model, only used coal from Northern NSW, as opposed to the Southern NSW, because it burnt hotter. Interestingly, Keith & Vince both worked together for a time on the railways, so you can imagine, there were some pretty good yarns. Congratulations Keith, I know any of us would love to have such an enviable school & work record as yours. In closing, may we ask you to be sure & tell one of us about anybody you feel could use a visit whether it be in hospital or at home. Similarly, if you are going into hospital etc, yourself always let us know. And don’t forget, we would love you to come along on our visits anytime. Cheers, Dave Jeffrey.
