S pring is definitely in the air! After a very mild winter the trees have sprouted new leaves early and the flowers are in full bloom. Our garden is

looking glorious thanks to the efforts of Li Tang Kee, our hard working gardener.

Many of you will be happy to hear that we are planning to upgrade the WiFi in the club this year. We will be installing high speed fiber optic cable for internet service in the Main Building and the Court Building. This will improve the speed and reliability of the service and I am sure will be welcomed by all our members. I will keep you posted on the progress of this project.

Our Spring Clean Sale is coming on Saturday, 18 May. This is the perfect opportunity for you to recycle and reuse useful but no longer needed items. Members are invited to rent a table for a modest fee or donate items to The Helena May bric-a-brac table. All proceeds go to our Charity of the Year, Home Care for Girls.

The International Women’s Day Lunch was held on 8 March this year. Sally Lo, the founder of the Hong

Kong Cancer Fund, gave a very personal account of her life and how she came to start this wonderful organisation. This is an annual charitable event that celebrates the exceptional women of Hong Kong and their achievements.

We are continuing our themed Lunch and Dinner Specials this spring. Our Food and Beverage committee works with our Executive Chef Craig Li to develop special dishes around a monthly theme. The March theme highlighted modern Irish food. We will have a Spring theme for April, a French-inspired theme for May and a Queen’s Birthday theme for June. I encourage you to try these delicious special dishes.

The Events and Fundraising Working Group will be hosting a Children’s Party in our Garden on 4 May. The theme this year is Super Heroes. This family orientated event is popular so please book your spot early.

Keep your eyes open for these and other activities and events in our weekly E-news.

We have added a new Discount Benefit partner to our roster. Pret-a-dress.com provides a rental service for special occasion designer dresses in UK sizes 4-16. The Helena May’s members will receive a 10% discount on rental charges. A complete list of the 2019 Discount Benefit partners is located on the last page of the quarterly magazine.

Enjoy the lovely spring weather and I hope to see you at The Helena May over the coming months.

Restaurant

Two new permanent staff, Billy Woo and Sandy Chung, joined the Restaurant Team in 2019.

Sandy joined the Club in January as Waitress. She has been working in different types of restaurants before she joining our team. She is married with two children. In her leisure time, she likes traveling, watching television and dining with friends.

Billy also joined The Helena May’s Family as Senior Waiter in January. He has a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry with various managerial roles in bars and western restaurants.

It was very unfortunate that Billy was involved in the bus accident at the West Kowloon Highway on 4 March. At the time of writing, he is still on sick leave recovering from injuries. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Kitchen

Frank Hui and Candy Choi joined us as Commis Chefs on 1 April 2019.

Frank completed his Certificate in Western Cuisine and Higher Diploma in Culinary Art with the International Culinary Institute in Pokfulam. He has worked in various restaurants and hotels before he joined The Helena May.

Candy has completed a Bachelor Degree in Journalism and Communication with the Chinese University of Hong Kong. After working at a desk job for two years, she found that her interest lay elsewhere. She loves cooking and is passionate about the Food and Beverage industry. In a specialty café environment, she developed basic culinary skills in preparing western dishes.

Both young staff look forward to learning from Executive Chef Craig Li.

Annual Staff Party

The Helena May staff spent a fun filled evening at our Annual Staff Party on 8 March 2019.

There were 36 staff attending this event. Each department came up with creative games and a competition was held among the tables. Some of the games were quite hilarious and had everyone laughing.

The evening finished with a delicious Chinese banquet and a lucky draw. We would like to thank all the members who contributed lai sees for the wonderful prizes for the lucky draw.

A Visit to Zetland Hall

On a beautiful sunny morning in January our party of Helena May members and guests took a leisurely stroll up the hill from The Helena May to 1 Kennedy Road, Zetland Hall.

This unassuming building which was dated from 1950 and named after the second Earl of Zetland, Grand Master of English Freemasonry, is the leading venue for Freemasonry in Hong Kong.

We were eager to be enlightened in aspects of Freemasonry by our guide, the Masonic Custodian, Pedro Da Cruz Prata. Over the next couple of hours in the Blue Room and over lunch we learnt a great deal.

Within a strict framework of no politics, no religion, the “Brothers” strive to live by the fundamental principles of integrity, good will and charity. Aiming to make a good man better through the use of Masonic emblems in meetings, teachings and rituals. Many of these emblems relate to the working tools of medieval stonemasons, the original founders of the Freemasons. One such example, the square and a set of compasses – the square to square a Freemason’s actions and the compasses to circumscribe and keep within moral bounds – is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry.

The Blue Room, or Temple, is the guidance centre of Zetland Hall. On entering, passing between replica pillars of Boaz and Jacin, every Freemason is reminded from the symbolic letter “G” hanging from a

beautiful blue star studded ceiling to the chequered black and white, good and evil, carpet at their feet of the moral choices and boundaries to be set in their lives.

Pedro Da Cruz Prata gave us a thought provoking and interesting day out.

Ihave recently joined the Activities Committee and I want to tell you that I have been stunned by the dynamic work of the ladies of this Committee. Each of the ladies brings to the meetings their own ideas

for an outing or an event in the Club. The Committee discusses them and they are added to a list. These ideas are so creative as many of you, who have taken part in an activity, will very well know. For instance, recently we visited the Sewage Treatment Plant in Stanley – perhaps not the first place you would think of going to for pleasure. But it was fascinating and hardly smelly at all and the guide at the Plant was first class. I only hope that I can live up to the high standards set by this Committee and make some suggestions of my own.

You will see in these pages other events we have enjoyed over the last months. For upcoming terrific activities, please look at the weekly emails and the notices in the Club. If you have any ideas yourself that you would like to contribute for an outing or an event within The Helena May please pass your ideas in writing to the Committee, via the Office. We would be very happy to explore your ideas and get back to you.

On 24 February we were delighted to be invited to visit Pokfulam Village. Although many of us have driven past the village, few of us had any idea of the thriving community that has lived there for over 300 years. We were met by two docents,

Nigel and Sarah, both of whom were historians with the University of Hong Kong and had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the area. We heard how the village was one of the first communities in Hong Kong and was settled because of its proximity to water from three streams and because from a Fung Shui perspective it had the magical combination of the mountains behind and the open sea in front.

This village is one of the last remaining indigenous villages on Hong Kong Island and is included in the 2014 World Monuments Watch by the World Monuments Fund. The village also has a strong connection to the

Dairy Farm Group, which was set up in 1886 to provide Hong Kong with fresh milk, and many of the village residents worked for the Dairy Farm.

There was so much to see on this tour of one of Hong Kong’s most historically important conservation sites. As it was so popular we may arrange another tour in the autumn. Please let us know if you would be interested.

Visit to the World’s Preeminent International Jewellery Show

When we entered the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show on Saturday, 2 March, we were met by Jo Chung from the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Jo gave us our access-all-area VIP passes, which included Executive Lounge Access and a beautiful makeup bag as a gift.

First, Jo introduced us to some Hong Kong designers and we were lucky enough to be able to try on some amazing jewellery, including a 30-carat aquamarine ring. Jo also gave us an overview of the different areas of the fair, which is divided by country and by product. The next stop was a fashion show that showcased jewellery from around the world and then we visited the fine jewellery exhibition.

Last, but by no means least, we visited the Antique Jewellery section with vintage Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and Tiffany (to mention but a few) jewellery items on display.

In the elegant setting of our Blue Room, on the pleasant afternoon of 23 January, the annual cheque presentation ceremony for our Charities of the Year 2018 was held.

We are happy to share with you that both organisations will be meaningfully using our funds. The Integrated Brilliant Education Center (IBEC) is using our funds for their new centre in Sham Shui Po. The Chee Sing Kok Social Centre of The Humanity Love has used our funds for the much-needed renovations of their home in Kennedy Town, adding bedrails for the immobile elderly, handrails for walking safely, painting of the bedrooms and a hygienic bathroom that is now rust free with no broken or rotten tiles.

We thank all our members for coming forward year-round to support the club’s fund-raising initiatives and we do hope for your continued support in 2019.

Wellness Talk – Cardiovascular Disease

Dr Michael Chan gave a very informative talk on cardiovascular disease in the Blue Room on 22 January 2019. He is the Clinical Assistant Professor in Cardiology at the University of Hong Kong and is currently working in the Gleneagles Hong Kong Hospital.

In Hong Kong, the third most common cause of death is heart disease and the incidence is higher in males than females. Dr Chan discussed various types of heart disease, the symptoms and treatments. As prevention is the key, Dr Chan imparted some very sensible advice on lifestyle adjustments through diet and physical exercise.

The audience were very engaged and were enthusiastic in asking questions at the end of the talk.

On 8 December 2018, eleven volunteers from The Helena May participated in the Haven of Hope Love Bags Project. They arrived at

the Hospital at 8:45 am and took a group photo at the lobby of the main hospital building. The weather was warm and sunny, like the beautiful minds of the participants on that day.

Many volunteers have participated in the event several times. I could recognize their faces and remember their names. We chatted and greeted each other as it has been one year since we last met.

Before we divided up into several groups, the staff from the hospital gave us a briefing on “Dos and Don’ts” during the Love Bag Delivery. We planned to visit 80 patients who were recently discharged from the hospital. They lived in various public housing estates in Sau Mau Ping, Tseung Kwan O, and Po Lam. The Love Bag consisted of milk formula, moisture cream and some daily necessaries for winter. I made four visits this time and met some elderly people aged from 65 to 89.

Ms Li, who is 87 years old and lived alone, impressed me a lot. She was so pleased when we visited with her. Most of the time, she was alone and felt lonely. She gave us a warm welcome and shared snacks that she kept for her “VIP” visitors with us. It brought back memories of my grandma. She loved her grandkids visiting her. She used to prepare some candies and biscuits. She never ate them but waited until the kids arrived so she could share with them.

Thank you to the donors for your donations to support this Love bags project. Your generosity makes the project possible. Thank you to all volunteers for helping out on that day. They brought warmth, happiness and good wishes to the elderly folks we visited. I wish everyone a happy year ahead. Till we meet again in 2019...

It is always a joy to prepare for the Harmony House Party. I enjoyed the opportunity to visit the toy shops to get a good assortment of toys for the

children. After returning from the toy shop visit, we laid all the toys out and put other donated packages together to form a big bundle for each and every child according to their age and gender. It is very fulfilling to watch the excitement of the children obtaining and opening up their gifts from Santa Joey.

We also had to recruit young people to serve as volunteers to help the children in the games. Without the help from the young volunteers, the games would never be as successful. A student volunteer actually said at the end of the party that it was the most meaningful event she attended so far. She would like to serve again next year if she had the chance.

The attendance at our welcome dinner for mentors and mentees on 18 January, 2019 was a record high. The Green Room was never as packed as for this occasion as there were 21 of us in total. Thanks to all for their support.

This welcoming dinner has always been a great opportunity for mentors and mentees to mingle and to get to know each other better. There were many exchanges of thoughts and much laughter. It is also a time for mentees to learn more about the heritage building of The Helena May. To the mentees, the short docent tour of the building was an eye opener and a delightful key to this best-kept-secret in town.

2019 Mentorship Programme

It was my first time helping out with the Harmony House Party. I was assigned as a team leader to cheer and guide the children in playing games. It

was fun. The weather was good and everyone enjoyed the open space of the Garden.

We had tea in the Main Lounge; visiting families appreciated the décor and the food so much. The final highlight was the gift presentation by Santa Claus. Every family received a big bag of presents. It was rewarding to see them so happy. Would you like to multiply your joy in the coming Christmas? Donate money for the gifts or come and be a helper.

Our speaker this year on 8 March, Sally Lo, who heads the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, gave a lively and very moving account of what led her to start the Fund in

1987, and also a fascinating glimpse into her very interesting life.

When Sally first came to Hong Kong in the 1960s as a young married woman, the city was in turmoil. Riots, together with plunging stock and property prices, made for great instability and a curfew was in place. Sally lived with her husband’s family in a palatial home and was told by her mother-in-law that her role was to do community work. This seems to have been ideal for Sally, who is energetic, capable and very outgoing. She embarked on several different ventures with girlfriends and spent time volunteering at the Duchess of Kent Children’s Hospital.

In the mid-1980s a close friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer, but very little support or information was available at that time in Hong Kong. The experience left a deep and lasting impression on Sally and eventually led to the setting up of the first Cancer Patient Resource Centre at the Queen Mary Hospital. Under Sally’s hands-on management the Cancer Fund now offers extensive support for patients not only in the hospital setting, but also in the community and at home.

Sally has touched many lives and inspired and supported countless individuals and families through the most challenging times. She truly personifies the spirit that we celebrate on International Women’s Day.

Mardi Gras Party

On Saturday, 30 March, the Main Lounge was turned into Old New Orleans, coming alive for the spectacular Mardi Gras Party. The evening began with cocktails in the Garden Room before moving to the Main Lounge, which looked absolutely stunning. The decorations were thoughtfully and carefully chosen to

meet the Mardi Gras theme with the iconic colours of Purple, Green and Gold to the delight of the 75 participants. Everyone made fabulous efforts on their exotic costumes with plenty of feather boas and lots of glitter! The winners of the “best dressed” really deserved to win as there was no shortage of creativity having gone into their ensembles.

Each table enjoyed spectacular table decorations that complimented beautifully the essence of Mardi Gras, creating a wonderful ambiance. We were entertained throughout the evening by Mr Gary Seib, our amazing MC who kept us fully engaged, helping to make the silent auction of some fabulous Mardi Gras related items a success, raising a healthy $4,700. The Mardi Gras raffle generated $10,700, which will go to our chosen Charity of the Year, Home Care for Girls.

The Creole menu was both beautifully presented and executed, and complimented with well-chosen wines by our wonderful and dedicated catering staff. After enjoying a delicious dinner, the dancing began to some familiar New Orleans Jazz tunes and some oldies that generated plenty of energy on the dance floor, taking us through the evening. I would personally like to thank the staff for making this is a memorable evening for the club and a personal thank you for making the most amazing Mardi Gras Birthday cake, which took my breath away. Thank you for helping me celebrate my birthday in true Mardi Gras style!

Thanks to the Events and Fundraising Working Group and the staff for a wonderful evening.

Serious Matters: With the increasing concern of allergic reactions we have taken a proactive role in training

restaurant and kitchen staff in Allergy Awareness. Whilst we endeavour to take every precaution, if you are allergic to certain food items, please inform the restaurant staff. They will inform the kitchen. If the kitchen is not sure about the ingredients of the dish, the restaurant staff will suggest that you order something else. A disclaimer with further information has been included in the menu.

I’m back! And, very happy to be on the Council and chairing the Food & Beverage Committee, and the Fundraising & Events Working Group. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Diana Rose for her great

work and commitment, chairing the committee for four years. I am delighted that she will remain on the committee.

On 17 January we hosted the Bay Area Metro Band concert. It was well attended with over 60 members enjoying a dinner and dance. If you haven’t already, check out the photos on our Facebook page!

The Chef’s Table was a resounding success. Chef Craig Li created an exquisite menu that was paired with wines selected by our restaurant Manager Peter Lau. Betty Simpson hosted the evening eloquently describing the dishes and the associated wines. A truly wonderful evening

set in the stunning Blue Room. I am hoping this exclusive event will become a regular annual or bi-annual event for our members.

2019 commenced with an international cuisine monthly special. I hope you have enjoyed the Australian and Chinese themed menu for January and February. The International Monthly Food Promotions continued with an Irish theme in March, a Spring theme in April, and will have a delicious French inspired menu for May.

We often receive suggestions and comments from members, and all notes are discussed and where possible we incorporate the ideas. This month we received an email suggesting that “members submit one favourite recipe to the new chef for consideration for the monthly menu.” Our menu is extensive, but if you have a favourite recipe that you would like the F&B Committee to consider please feel free to submit it via the Suggestion box.

Our ficus tree has probably stood on the north side of The Helena May by today’s loading bay since at least 1916. Unfortunately, in the photos of the early years, it’s not clear if the leaves and tree branches belong to our old

tree – what do you think?

Photos taken in that time period show many trees on Garden Road. A large tree was actually growing on the road in front of our building but this one has disappeared long ago. The tree on the opposite side of the road could well be the one that is still there today, next to the US Consulate.

Any tree over 100 years old is considered a heritage

tree in Hong Kong. Time, typhoons, cockatoos, and urban environmental stresses have taken a toll on our heritage tree. Government guidelines on trees require us to keep and maintain our tree in good health. If we were to lose it for whatever reason, we would have to replace it with one of similar girth (impossible!) or plant 14 new trees (where could we put them?).

Today, our ficus tree, a large-leaved banyan, looks nowhere near its crowning glory. Branches have broken during storms, cockatoos regularly come to party and eat new shoots, and we need to spend thousands of dollars each year to an arborist to prune and maintain it, to keep the area around the tree safe. During our last major typhoon, one large branch was flung onto Garden Road, which fortunately was traffic-free at the time.

This is why we are now trying out a new chemical treatment that will gently slow the tree’s canopy growth while maintaining a more vibrant, healthier tree with greater defence against pests and a stronger root system. This should ultimately result in lower pruning costs and also give us fewer worrying moments the next time a monster typhoon comes around.

The Library invites members to share any memories that you and your Mum had (or have) of reading a book together. Please share your thoughts in writing of why a particular story meant so much – whether it be a serious,

absorbing, exciting or even funny experience. Your contribution can be a few sentences or up to 100 words. Please include the name of the book.

All contributions should be completed and handed in or emailed to the Library from 2 to 11 May. Kids and adults are welcome to enter. All entries will win a specially baked cookie that says “Best Mum Ever” on it – the perfect gift for Mother’s Day!

Here’s an example of a Reading with Mum memory by Lynn Seymour, a member of the Library Committee:

When I was a little girl, my Mum would read stories out of my favourite series of Winnie The Pooh books. I remember when Piglet was looking down a large hole in the ground and heard a groaning sound coming from the bottom (it was Pooh who had fallen in and had hurt himself). Piglet was convinced it was a Heffalump (a sort of elephant type of animal) and Piglet was terrified. He asked “Is that a Heff, Heff, Heff – Heffalump?!!” I still remember laughing and laughing while my Mum read it out loud. That was my favourite story.

The Books of Dorothy Eden

Have you noticed that when an author is no longer producing books and there is no new book on the New Shelf to get people interested in more of their writing, that author’s

books drift into an “amnesia zone”? Dorothy Eden is one of these authors. We have 20 of her books and for years they were so popular that you will find layers of date stamp pages. She was a prolific writer who tried her hand at various genres, but her main success was with her historical and crime novels, although there is a cult following for her gothic novels. If you look at Amazon you will see that her books are regularly reprinted, so is it the right time for a revival of interest in her work in our Library?

Most of Dorothy Eden’s books were last taken out in the 1990s.
