Last month’s introduction of the new Performance Elite products from Athene continues a recent trend of focus on accumulation as opposed to income rider benefits. Why are we seeing more prouducers leaning this way? Guaranteed incomes are down. Many of the newer riders use stacking of guarantees and projections to get to a higher income account value, but lower guaranteed income value. While actuaries can explain why this is, it’s a great lesson in disconnect between sales and actuaries-they forgot we sold it because it was guaranteed. Accumulation opportunities are up. Uncapped crediting strategies offer a real and viable alternative to otherwise low caps and low fixed rates. Consumer expectations are changing. Our clients are beginning to understand that we might see rate increase, but not the big spike that kept many from taking advantage of our longer term higher rates. Producers are changing their outlook. The income rider sale limits our clients options more than any surrender charge ever could. Producers have noted that they can offer better returns with the newer uncapped strategies, great systematic income and the opportunity to be more nimble in the future. You may be thinking that the rates on some of your older annuities make them untouchable. After all nothing is guaranteeing more than 3%, and the funds are completely liquid-what is better than that in today’s market?

For your clients that are concerned about the high cost of standalone LTC plans, and the many that are concerned that they are paying that high cost for a benefit they would prefer to never use, this plan will provide 36 equal monthly benefits for Nursing Care or 60 equal monthly payments for Chronic Care. Let’s suppose annuity rates become more favorable and the 5.6% is not so attractive, your client could exercise the return of premium feature and 1035 exchange the money into a new more favorable annuity. If any of these opportunities sound too good to be true, it’s time for you to take a closer look.

“Look where?” Review your client files and look for those annuity contracts that are beyond their surrender period; also consider those clients with annuities they are not drawing an income from, those that purchased the annuity only to pass on to the next generation. Don’t count out clients that have IRA’s or other qualified assets that do not want or need RMD’s, as the newest products offer great solutions for those clients as well. Then look to your life team here at IAMS for the right fit for each client’s need! The quick turnaround from submission to commission will surprise you and, speaking of commission, you can count on payouts between 9 and 15%.
