MarCoast objectives

MarCoast key objectives Set up a service network Deliver a consistent portfolio of marine and coastal services at European

scale Improve validation, qualification, and acceptance of service capabilities Reach sustainability in the mid-term (ideally before the end of the project)

How ? Key and reference actors in each European country Establish formal relationships with users based on commitments (SLA) Gain institutional and political support at European and National levels Define the legitimate position and role of MarCoast in the GMES puzzle

Consistency with Fast Track Marine Core Services Operational connections with other reference initiatives (GlobColour,

Medspiration,…) ESA, National Agencies, EU (fast-track services)

MarCoast assets

Strong involvement and commitment of end-users The project is really user-oriented Reference users in key regions of Europe EEA as reference European level user

A structured service provision framework Network of distributed service providers Commitment of service providers through SLAs Pragmatic organisation with

Up-stream generic information products providers Service providers to serve European scale users (ACRI/JRC for EEA) Regional service providers for regional customisation/enhancement of the

service + service distribution to National/regional/local users or downstream service providers (Planetek, MUMM, IVM, Brockmann Consult, FIMR, Ifremer, ACRI,…)

Etablished dynamic process for user feedback and service validation and improvement definition

Short term perspective

Lots of complementary initiatives and projects GlobCOLOUR, Medspiration, Mersea, Marine Core Service, Marcoast,…

Challenge for GMES to demonstrate maturity in the next stage Usefulness and efficiency of services to deliver appropriate information

products actually supporting decisions in sensitive environmental policy areas

Opportunity to build a strong case on coastal water management For end to end service chain demonstration with homogeneous quality and

maturity (no weak link) Using Marcoast as natural end of the chain element to link with operational

users Assuring good coverage of

European scale needs (EEA,…) National needs in key countries of Europe Experiment local adaptation of service with motivated institutional regional actors
