We are rapidly approaching the end of the third quarter, and it is time to register for the classes your child will need to enroll in for next year. Encourage your child to work hard to pass all of his/her classes this year so that he/she can have the opportunity to take his/her desired courses. Your child’s counselor will be helping him/her create his/her schedule for next year; please have a conversation with your child about his/her future schedule.

8th Grade Orientation:

Our annual 8th Grade Orientation will be held on Tuesday, February 21st at 5:45 pm. You and your child will have an opportunity to meet the department leaders and learn about the many extracurricular clubs/athletic programs our school has to offer. We are excited to meet our new grizzlies and hope you can attend.

Our Mission: Lastly, we want our students to have a great experience at Galena High School where they feel supported and valued.

If you notice that your child is having difficulty with anyone or any class, check in with his/her counselor or myself so that we can get him/her assistance. There are lunch time and after school options for students to work with peer tutors if they need additional academic support. We are here to help all students do their best and work to their full potential. You, as parents, are our strongest allies, and together we can come up with a plan for your child to be successful in all classes.

A Message From the Den By David Hawley, Dean of Students

Tardiness/Truancy Just a reminder that tardies have been reset to zero at the beginning of the semester. Your student is allowed FOUR free tardies prior to receiving a consequence. Many students have used their free tardies and will have a consequence from here on out. Excessive unexcused tardies will be addressed in the discipline office and can lead to reflection activities, school beautification, or a school suspension. Please encourage your student to be on-time to class. In the event that your child is truant for either a class period or the entire school day, a truancy letter could be issued per State law. If your student will also be issued a reflection activity at lunch or after school instructional recovery time. A third truancy will result in a citation from the district truancy officer and the student will have to attend juvenile court. You can access your child’s attendance report on Infinite Campus to verify any unexcused absences or late arrivals to class. Dress Code Hopefully the weather will be improving soon. Please be aware of your student’s attire and see if they are in appropriate school dress code. Dresses, skirts, and shorts need to be no shorter than middle of the thigh. Pants may not have any holes or tears

above the middle of the thigh where skin can be seen. Shirts need to cover the back, shoulders, and stomach area at all times. Our administration team will continue to enforce our dress code policy. Please help us by asking them to change if what they are wearing looks questionable. A violation of our dress code will result in changing into PE clothes and other consequences after the first formal warning. We do allow the student to call home and ask to bring them different attire, but we will not hold them in the office till you arrive. Our teachers and administration team do not want our students missing any more instructional time. School Safety and Secret Witness Our administration team and school staff are working hard to keep our students safe at Galena High School. Remind your child that Secret Witness offers monetary rewards for reporting and if they see anything suspicious that one should report that information. If at any time a student feels they have witnessed or heard of anything that shouldn’t be occurring on school campus, they can make a Secret Witness tip without anyone knowing their identity. The Secret Witness phone number is (775) 329-6666. Students can also text the tip to 274637 then enter Tip725 with their message. With over 1400 students on the campus, we all need to work together to keep our students and staff safe.

Due to the recent events in our community, I would like to take a moment to remind you of the procedures Galena has in place for a Code Yellow (Shelter in Place) and a Code Red (Lockdown). We practice these drills as a school throughout the year just as we do fire drills.

A Code Yellow (Shelter in Place) is used when there is a situation around our school (not on campus) that warrants us limiting Galena’s student population exposure. The type of incidents would include but are not limited to the following: vehicle accident limiting safe passage for Galena’s student drivers, chemical spill, major incident/crime involving law officers in local community, major fight or gang activity on campus, or any airborne chemical gas hovering over Galena high school.

A Code Red is used if there is an immediate threat (active assailant) on campus to the student population. Situations such as shots

fired, stabbing, or explosion near the area, hostage situation, and natural disaster are some examples of a code red being implemented. In both scenarios teachers round up as many students as they can from the hallways before they lock their doors, and begin communicating with the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). The CIT is made up upon announcement of the building administrators. Teachers inform the CIT the status of everyone in the room via email in order to account for all students. Students and staff are asked to remain quiet and maintain a low profile during a code red, but are able to continue with classroom instruction during a code yellow. I am proud of how we are able to execute these drills and hope that we never need to use them for an actual event.

THE GRIZZLY’S GROWL PAGE 11

It was great to see so many of families at our 8th Grade Orientation evening. We hope we were able to address many of your questions and give you a glimpse of student life and school spirit at Galena High School. We are eager to welcome the Class of 2021 in August and are confident that our new Galena families will find our community very hospitable and our school quite easy to navigate.

Galena offers many interesting classes and hosts many diverse clubs for our students. We encourage students to join clubs, participate in athletics and pursue artistic pursuits, in addition to their academic classes. Galena High School has a long tradition of excellence and we enjoy celebrating the diverse talents of our student body.

Students, finish up your middle school education strong so you are ready to be very successful at Galena. Parents, we have packed this Grizz Growl with information to help prepare you and your students for a smooth transition to high school. Should you have additional questions or need information, our website is very comprehensive and the staff at Galena is here to help you. Have a great spring and we look forward to welcoming your students in August.

Dear 8th Graders and 8th Grade Parents:

We are looking forward to you being a part of the Grizzly community! At this point, most all of the 8th grade student course requests for next year have been entered into the computer. Your schedule will not be ready until late July/early August and you should be receiving information in the mail over the summer about our “schedule pick-up day” before school begins.

Many parents and students want to know if they are “on track” for college admission requirements starting in their ninth grade year. We make sure all of our students are enrolled in the appropriate coursework that, when successfully completed, will fulfill district requirements for high school graduation. Please remember that our district graduation requirements and diploma requirements are outlined in our Course Offerings Booklet your student should have already received in February (along with their “green” course selection sheet). Many of our students plan on attending either TMCC or UNR and it is always a good idea to familiarize yourself with UNR’s admission requirements (www.unr.edu) to make sure yourself that you are on track. If your student is considering an out-of-state college or university, you will need to investigate their admission requirements as soon as possible directly through their admissions office or websites as they can- and frequently do- vary from UNR requirements. As your student moves through each year of high school at Galena,

they will have additional course options (including Honors and Advanced Placement classes) to choose from to help make themselves the strongest applicant possible. And, the counseling office is available to work together with you and your student as we all journey through this process together over the next four years!

Enjoy the remainder of middle school and finish strong! Have a great summer and try to read at least one book at your reading level this summer too. We look forward to seeing you ready to go in August. See you soon and welcome to Galena High School Class of 2021!!

Senior News Spring is almost here—or we are sure hoping for it!

June 13th graduation will be here in no time! Seniors sometimes think because they have been accepted into their colleges or made their summer plans and often only need English and Government credits to graduate, it is time to kick back. However, feeling unmotivated, not completing assignments, not keeping an eye on Infinite Campus grades, not attending school or forgetting to turn in notes for absences can be especially devastating at this point in a student’s high school career. Seniors- you must keep working and attending classes! Keep grades up so there are no unwelcome surprises at the end. We want all students to pass ALL their classes. This is NOT the semester to get careless about completing assignments; don’t add unnecessary stress!!

Many awards and scholarships, including the Millennium Scholarship as well as Honors and Advanced Diploma designations, are based on EIGHT semesters of high school course work. In fact, college admissions decisions are always conditional based on receipt of the FINAL transcript that includes the spring semester grades. So please keep encouraging your student to keep up the hard work and finish high school strong! We will ask seniors to “pre-order” final transcripts on Parchment.com in MAY with details coming in the next newsletter and on announcements.

Many seniors are completing online classes required for graduation (or as fifth class in minimum load) through BYU Independent Study, WCSD Extended Studies (PE Options, Supervised PE, Job Experience) and A+ courses. Five classes must go on transcript, so students need to finish them. Success in online coursework is a risky, especially when a student’s high school diploma and graduation ceremony (or perhaps Millennium Scholarship) depends on successful completion. Although we have already had this discussion with the seniors individually, please continue to encourage your student to work consistently to complete all online coursework INCLUDING FINAL EXAMS by the absolute deadline of April 28, 2017. For BYU Independent Study classes, time is required to order the final, have it sent to Galena, complete the final, send it back, have it graded, and ultimately have the final grade posted on the student’s Galena transcript, so ideally students should FINISH BYU Coursework over Spring Break and ORDER THE FINAL EXAM to be sent to me, Senior Class Counselor, Mandy Campbell. Once I receive it I can notify the student to schedule a time to take it here at Galena, usually during the student’s off campus period (or after school). If any written work or projects are required, then there is even additional time that is needed (remember- BYU professors do not operate on the same timeline as the Galena calendar!). We have had seniors fail

to graduate and not be permitted to participate in the graduate ceremony (or “walk”) because they waited too long to get online coursework completed, or failed the BYU final exam with too little time to do a re-take, or failed an A+ final exam twice. It is very unfortunate when these scenarios occur, so please adhere to the spring break goal and April 28 deadline to have off site work and final exams completed! COUNSELORS ARE NOT AVAILABLE TO PROCTOR BYU FINAL EXAMS IN MAY due to duties relating to AP Exam and EOC Exams, so this is why the goal to finish all final exams by April 28th has been set.

At this point many seniors are anxiously awaiting admissions decisions from universities and colleges all over the country. This tends to be very stressful for the student and often families as well. The Financial Aid packet often must be considered to finalize school selections. I never recommend students take on student loans for undergraduate work if staying local would not require loans!! If your senior still has not heard any news soon (by early April at latest), I would suggest a phone call to the admissions office of schools to verify that all application requirements have been met. You may also want to contact the financial aid offices at the colleges and universities to make sure they have received all necessary financial aid forms and applications (e.g. FAFSA, etc.) so that a financial aid determination is not delayed. Sometimes a simple phone call or re-ordering a transcript via Parchment.com will take care of the problem. Do not let problems go until it is too late for us to help! Enjoy your final semester of high school seniors and parents but remember to keep track of ALL deadlines and KEEP WORKING HARD Class of 2017!

The February 28th ACT is a graduation requirement, so juniors must attend AND SENIORS WHO MISSED IT LAST YEAR HAVE TO MAKE IT UP. Colleges base student math and English course PLACEMENT on ACT/SAT scores, so doing well saves time and money in college. Seniors can and should retake ACT/SAT for higher placement in English and college math courses. The Feb 28th test MAY be used to determine math placement for the Class of 2018 as well as options for TMCC Jump Start and UNR Dual Credit courses for 2017-2018 school year. Juniors often consider this exam a “practice test” then sign up online (the traditional way to take ACT and SAT exams) to take the test(s) in June (or next fall). Check out www.actstudent.org and www.sat.org/register for more information.

THE GRIZZLY’S GROWL PAGE 13

February has been a busy month as we have completed registration for senior year! In January, I presented an overview in your student’s English class of important things to keep in mind and provided students with the following: a course offerings catalog and a yellow registration form. All seniors must take a minimum of five classes next year; only students on track to graduate can have “off campus” periods. Parents must approve all off campus periods! Following these presentations, Ms. Campbell and I sat down with every junior to go over their selections and verify needed signatures on the yellow form. There is still time to change course selections; however, we need to get all course requests finalized by Spring Break when we will run all the requests through our computers to determine our staffing needs, etc.

With just three semesters left (including the one in progress), juniors who are short on credits need to have a plan in place for recovering credits to graduate in June 2018. We do have an online class/credit recovery system here, called A+, but not all colleges will accept online classes. There are also opportunities to earn credits this summer through BYU correspondence (www.elearn.byu.edu), which costs approximately $140 per semester course. However, please contact me before enrolling and paying for a BYU course to make sure it will meet the district requirement in question. Also, please note that the NCAA does not accept BYU coursework.

Spring Break is the ideal time for juniors to VISIT

COLLEGES when traveling! Students may be able to get a tour of the campus and even attend a class if you contact the schools in advance to make such arrangements. Campus visits are an excellent opportunity to get a first-hand experience of a college to see if it will be a good fit for your student. The ACT was given to all junior students at Galena on February 28th per district requirement. We expect to receive scores for your students sometime in April. We do encourage your junior student to consider signing up for the SAT as well (sat.collegeboard.org) for later this spring. The SAT will be given on May 6 and June 3. All arrangements (registration, payment, etc.) must be made directly through the SAT company/website.

With only a few months remaining in your student’s junior year, we encourage them to continue working hard in all of their classes and finish on a strong note! The senior year is right around the corner and we want all of our juniors to be in the best possible academic position for success next year! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Shinae Watterson, Junior counselor ([email protected])

Keep Up the Good Work Juniors!

REGISTRATION REMINDERS

Any changes to courses requested during REGISTRATION for next year, please let counselor know BEFORE SPRING BREAK. We will construct the Master Schedule for next year over Spring Break, so changes after Spring Break may not be possible. Best bet: student can bring a note signed by parent or email the counselor to change requests in March. Parent permission often needed since parent signed original request. If a student requested an off campus (for senior year), parent permission is required and can’t be put into requests without parent signature. If a student plans an off campus class (Job Experience, BYU class, TMCC class), another course will have to be put on schedule until the fall when students can show proof of enrollment in these off campus options. All seniors must have a minimum of five classes each semester.

Dear Sophomore Students and Parents,

Registration forms for your junior year are complete and I am currently inputting the courses you signed up for! The master schedule will not be finished with courses, teachers, and class periods assigned to you until late in the summer. It was great meeting with each of you to plan your junior year!

Parents, please be sure to do the online registration step for your student. You will need to login to the parent portal on Infinite Campus to do that, and can access IC from galenahigh.com. You will be updating your address, emergency contacts etc…

Please call Donna Williams if you run into any trouble with that process. Extension 30511.

End of Course Exams (EOC’s) are coming up for all students in April. Students will be assigned to appropriate exams based on the levels of Math and English courses completed.

All sophomores were given a copy of their transcript at one on one registration meetings. Please review that transcript with your student and if there are F’s on the transcript, consider having your student attend the A+ online credit recovery summer school program that will be offered at Galena.

Please email me with any questions. [email protected] Sophomore question of the month “Do I have to take two years of foreign language?” Answer – “It is not a Washoe County School District requirement, but if you want an honors diploma and/or you want to go to a University out-of-state someday, most of them require two years of the same foreign language (and one year of fine or performing arts). UNR does not have a foreign language requirement.” Thank you! Tracy Melcher NCC NCSC, Sophomore Counselor

Dear Freshmen and Freshmen Parents, Marisa Dunne & Mery Mares, Freshmen Counselors

Spring is finally here and this means registration Spring is finally here and this means registration season is in full swing. It is hard to believe that we have already selected classes for your student’s sophomore year! Our counselors have met with all the students individually to review the seven course selections for next year’s schedule (this was done in February); however, if you or your student has any questions about next year’s courses, please do not hesitate to contact us and we can make adjustments as needed. Freshman students were instructed to review their course requests with their parent and obtain their parent’s signature/approval on the bottom of the blue form. If, however, you still have not seen your student’s course requests for next year (many students forget to get your signature!), please contact us so we can review them. It is critical we have accurate course request information in order to build next year’s schedule. Also each freshman student received a copy of their transcript which is a summary of their academic progress (grades and credits) thus far. Spring Break (March 20th-31st) is a great time for students to take a deep breath and get re-focused on school work to finish the year on a strong note. There is definitely time to improve grades before the end of the school year. Remember that the nine-week grade report (the 3rd quarter ends on March 17th) is just a progress report and is not part of your student’s permanent high school transcript. It is critical that students successfully earn all credits for their freshman year. I strongly encourage students to take advantage of available tutoring and extra assistance from their teachers to improve their grades. At this point in time, we do not have any specific information or details on

summer school; however, please stay tuned! In the spirit of thinking about the next school year (already!), many students inquire about earning a letter for Community Service. That information is available on the Galena website (www.galenahigh.com) and click on the “Volunteer Ops” link on the left-hand side of the homepage. Please read all pages and directions carefully as there are many rules and deadlines that need to be adhered too. To earn a community service letter for next year, freshmen can begin logging volunteer hours this summer. Spring is also a great time to start thinking about and planning any family vacations or summer obligations. You might want to include a college visit or two if your travels take you close to college campuses. It is never too early to start gathering college information, researching options and making tentative plans. One of the best ways to really see if a college is a good fit for you is to set foot on their campus and learn more about the school first hand! Most colleges run campus tours all summer long. Many colleges also offer summer programs for high school students. These are typically of an academic nature and offer an opportunity to experience the college “life” firsthand while potentially earning some type of academic credit (this will vary though). Most of these types of programs, however, do require a financial commitment. In the meantime, with only a few months left as “freshmen”, please encourage your student to keep working hard and finish the year strong- it really does count. Academic success (and earning all of your credits) in the ninth grade sets the stage for a positive and successful outcome for graduation in 2020! Have a relaxing and restful Spring Break!
