Ralph – was a regular at Saturday lunches. He often had a mischievous grin and scratched his head in a curious manner. He

became known as the one who kept track of which table should be the one to go first to the food table. A memorial service

was held for Ralph on Saturday, February 02, 2013

Erin – granddaughter to one of our regular clients.

Dave – We knew him as “Dave, the puzzle guy.” Over the past couple of years he was a regular at the Mission during our

morning hours. He always amazed me with his rigged up trailer system, which consisted of an old hand-pulled grocery shop-

ping cart, a green “compost bin” – with a child’s toy dinosaur and a hairy troll screwed to the top. He’d pull this behind his

bike, or he’d pull this contraption by hand as he toured his regular route looking for cans and bottles. His passion for jigsaw

puzzles became quite apparent as we would bring more and more difficult ones to him to work on. He would arrange the

pieces meticulously in rows around the frame of the puzzle so that he could find the exact pieces to fit. One particularly diffi-

cult puzzle was double-sided, with the same picture on both sides. He worked at it each weekday for about 2 months. At

one point we thought he’d give up, but he persevered until he ran out of pieces. Upon completion, there were still 5 pieces

missing. He wrote a letter to the puzzle company to ask for those 5 pieces, describing in detail which ones he needed. We

haven’t heard whether he received a response back from the company, but we do plan on framing that puzzle as a tribute to

Dave the Puzzle Guy. We’ll miss him.

What Easter means people associated with

Open Arms Mission ...

Victory over the grave.

“Love has a face.”

Family

God’s word for the world.

Fun, exciting for the kids, sweet, sugar.

Time to be happy and thankful for spring and for Jesus.

Renewed life - His blood shed for my sins.

Being with family and the Lord.

Jesus thought of me long before I came into the world … spread

His love around.

Easter, the culmination of all that was foretold … and to think

that Jesus went through all of it for a sinner such as I.

To me it’s eternal life which I don’t deserve. But His blood covers

all my sins and I thank Jesus for His resurrection.

It is hard to believe that March is already here. I remember saying in the New Year

report that this was going to be a big year for the ministry of Open Arms Mission and so

far it’s been interesting. It seems that up to this point so far in the year, it’s been a lot of

problem solving and restructuring of the things that were once normal. We are still

sorting out the banquet plans. The farm hydro project met with some delays. Our

subsidized lighting upgrades at both store and warehouse have met with delays. There are

more little things that need attention, but these are all administrative and mechanical

issues and those kinds of things we can be patient with. What’s more important is the

Spiritual life of the ministry and that is where we have seen amazing victories. We’ve seen

Celebrate Recovery grow into a very valuable ministry to those needing recovery where

both men and women are making Biblical progress with their hurts and struggles. We’ve

seen the Redeemed Lives ministry continue to impact men. There have been some more

salvations and re-commitments of men’s lives and we have seen life change. Many of the

men that come right now are Christian men and they continue to grow in their Journey

with the Lord. Redeemed Goods has experienced the salvation of one of their volunteers

and the store relationships with customers continues to grow into opportunities to pray

with people and share God’s love. We are excited about Pelham Community Church

taking on a huge fund-raising effort to restore our old barn in steps to convert it to a

wood shop. They see the value in putting people to work in our vision for the farm

ministry. So friends, God is definitely at work in this place called Open Arms Mission.

Please continue to pray for this work of the Lord! Pray for the message of Hope that

we have for those that hurt.

We’ve been saddened by the loss of several Mission clients of late, but we have a

message of joy and peace to overcome all heartache and pain. Praise the Lord!

I have been very busy, but very privileged to speak at several churches and functions in

the first part of this new year. I thank God for the opportunities to share His work with

others.

I want to thank you all for your continued support, both physically and prayerfully.

Together we are making a difference. I know I say that all the time and it’s on our logo...

but it’s true! I really believe it! Together we are making a difference and I thank God for

that.

We must stay the course and see what God has in store for us as the year unfolds. As

you read the rest of this Newsletter, think about some of the programs that will launch

again soon as Spring arrives. You may be able to benefit from our Lawn Cutting or Power

Washing Services. You would get your job done while being effective in putting people to

work. You may want to put the summer Family Banquet on your calendar! Watch for

other opportunities on our website calendar.

As food banks across the

province geared up for the

busy holiday season, the

Ontario Association of

Food Banks launched its

Annual Hunger Report

2012 early in December.

The report found that food

bank use reached its

highest point ever in 2012,

as 412,998 individuals

(160,000 of which were

children) relied on food

banks every month across

Ontario.

With ever increasing

housing and food costs, and

continuous cuts to social

programs, many food bank

users are finding themselves

out of work and struggling

to make ends meet.

In 2012, just over 170,000

households turned to food

banks for the first time in

their lives.

pretty young lady and they are

to be married later this year.

One man is moving back to St.

were helping him move.

They came to Open Arms on

Saturday unannounced, to say

‘Thank You’ for the all the help

they received ten years

ago. The one comment that

stuck with me was that they

could not believe that

complete strangers would go

out of their way to help

them and make sure they were

doing ok. They sincerely meant

it and it was an emotional

time.

Craig, the Open Arms staff

member who we know from

overjoyed to hear their story

and gratefulness. I understand

that Craig must wonder on a

daily if they are making any

progress, since there are so

many people in great need. It

was really cool to be part of

that experience for Craig and

the four nice people.

Just think, someone none of us

knows did some good things

ten year ago and three lives

are much better for that

All seven of us were blessed to

we can serve lunch again later

Frank Smeenk Care Group Coordinator,

after serving lunch we received

a big surprise. Four people

entered the hall as lunch was

almost over and spoke to the

clients while we were in the

kitchen. Then they came down

to see us and told us their

testimony. (They thought we

worked at Open Arms too!!)

There were three men and a

pretty lady all speaking great

English with a beautiful Spanish

accent. For ten minutes they

went on and on, thanking us.

This was their story: Ten

years ago, the three young

men aged 19 and 20 left

Columbia, South America and

little English, knew no one and

had not much to live

Our story started 2 summers

ago when our youth group

from Zion Free Reformed

Church in Fenwick went on a

mission trip to West Virginia.

T h e p u r po s e o f t h e

organization we went through

( M u s t a r d s S e e d s a n d

Mountains) was not only to

help the people there, but to

help us find ways to help out in

our own communities.

Every other year our youth

group hosts a conference for

youth from churches in our

denomination, we have a

speech on Friday night and

usually an activity on Saturday,

this time we decided our

activities would be more

mission orientated.

In the morning with a group of

50 youth ages ranging from 16-

22, we went to many

neighborhoods in Welland and

collected food for Open Arms

Mission.

In the afternoon with about 10

groups, we headed to

neighborhoods in Fonthill to

play a game called “Bigger and

Better”; the point of the game

is to start with a pen or pencil

and go door to door asking to

switch the pen for something

bigger and better, and then to

take that item to the next

house and switch it for

something else bigger and

better. Some of the houses,

when we told them the items

were to be donated, let us

keep the items we had for

trading as well as giving us

something. We ended up with

things like bikes, wheel barrels,

couches, a washing machine

and many other household

items for Open Arms Mission.

While the kids had an

enjoyable time and have many

fun memories, the most

important thing is that many

local residents in both Welland

and Fonthill, opened their

doors to us, donated food and

household items and that is

what made this a success.

We thank you for that!

The first couple of months of

2013 at Mission Centre have

been fairly busy. I am grateful

for a great group of volunteers

who continue to serve well in

this mission field. As they

serve passionately, our clients

experience the love of God in

a practical, hands-on manner. I

hear volunteers regularly

engaging in conversation with

clients about their well-being.

You’ll find short anecdotes

throughout this newsletter

from volunteers who have

served in other ways –

Saturday lunches, providing

haircuts, and coordinating food

drives. We could not operate

without these selfless servants.

Thanks to a couple of eager

and ambitious retirees, we

have had some updates made

in our offices and staff

bathroom. Peter and Evelyn

Spyker, with help from their

son, Pete, volunteered their

time to do some drywall work,

paint and flooring.

Thanks to another volunteer,

Chris Roik, we’ve had

numerous minor maintenance

projects taken care of in our

Mission Centre building. Nikki

Fairlie, our regular haircutter,

serves one morning a month,

providing free haircuts to

clients for free. Hilda Gyugyei,

our sewing group facilitator,

s e r ve s e ver y Tuesday

afternoon, providing direction

to participants who work on

self-directed projects .

flow through His people.

very anxious for brief periods

of time.

While trimming his eyebrow

with my little clippers, he had

to sit back for a moment. I

asked if he was okay. He

answered that it reminded him

of his shock treatments, and

that he has had several. He

added without any other detail

that, "nothing was helping.”

He was my last client of the

day and thanked me several

times…first for cutting his hair,

then for volunteering, and also

for helping others.

He said he wished he could

repay me in some way. He

insisted on sweeping the floor

for me.

I couldn't deny him, it helped

him to feel that he hadn't taken

advantage of the service.

I don't think he realized what

that meant to me, or how

meeting him made me feel. He

was upset and aware of his

progressing condition - yet he

took his own time to make me

feel special and valued.

I won't forget him.

volunteering at the Mission

today. I don't mean to. I was

I want to share it.

I volunteer to do haircuts at

the food bank every month

and always leave feeling

blessed.

Sometimes it's hard to look

forward to it because I am so

busy and my work is not

always appreciated by those

that take a free haircut. But,

all in all, I really like to go.

Today, I met a man,

presumably on disability. It

might not have been especially

obvious in passing but upon

conversation, it was easy to

tell that this man was not

mentally sound.

He was very kind and overly

polite, but would occasionally

say silly things that didn't make

sense or he would become

This 2013 year is bringing with

it the adventure of budgeting.

The Board and Management

team have created a lean

budget to grapple with this

fiscal year.

In order to have the most

flexibility with donated funds

under the laws for Charities,

we have set up four

designations for gifts from

donors.

We prayerfully considered the

work of Open Arms Mission as

a whole and saw that there are

four required areas of

designations: Capital Campaign

(effective until 2014), Spiritual

Needs Ministry, Physical Needs

Ministry and General Ministry

Needs Expenses.

I would ask that you would

start using these designations

on future giving. Should you

have any concerns or

questions regarding what is

designation, we encourage you

to call me at the Mission

I will be glad to speak with you

further about this change.

One of our regulars at

Redeemed Lives got a phone

call from his brother Ron. He

had just been given bad news

that he had health issues, the

result of years of abuse of

alcohol and drugs. This news

hit him hard and he knew it

was time for a life change. He

called his brother here in

Welland looking for help,

looking for direction, looking

for Hope!

Ron immediately dropped his

addictive abuse and headed

for Welland where he hooked

up with the barn guys and the

Redeemed Lives Journey. He

left his girlfriend. He left his

job. He just knew he had to

come to Wel land to

straighten out his life. I don’t

think he had any idea what

this was about and why, but

he knew that his brother had

beaten his addictions some

20+ years earlier by the grace

of God. In the initial meeting,

Ron came out and shared

how he had a few days sober.

As the days went on, his

weekly report would be more

and more days of celebrated

sobriety. Since coming to

town, Ron has been attending

a local church and Celebrate

Recovery as wel l as

Redeemed Lives. He has

found his relationship with the

Lord. He initially tried to get

into a Rehab program

s o m e w h e r e b u t w a s

unsuccessful. However, he is

doing very well and growing.

We have also been able to

p l u g h i m i n t o o u r

exper imental “rooming

house” program with another

fellow from the barn who is

also in recovery. This is a

program where we have

designated one of our

apartment units as a shared

rooming house dwelling for

men in our programs of

recovery. The idea is to

provide a safe place to live, as

most rooming houses are not

a fit for recovery, and this

way the fel lows stay

connected to the Mission

next door and they must

continue to stay connected

with the Mission programs

that we have.

We thank God that the Open

Arms Ministry has been able

to make a difference in Ron’s

life as well as being there for

the support he needs. As I

write this testimonial, Ron

just celebrated 53 days of

sobriety on his 53rd Birthday,

isn’t that neat?

You may want to join in

keeping Ron in prayer … that

h e b e c o n t i n u a l l y

strengthened and encouraged

as he grows in the Lord, who

is rebuilding his broken life.

Redeemed Lives and Ron Hook Up

“… I am the resurrection

and the life.

He who believes in me

will live,

even though he dies,

and whosoever lives

and believes in me

will never die.”

Celebrate Recovery Welland (CR)

Officially Affirmed with Celebrate

Recovery Canada

At one of our regular February Thursday

evening meetings, we had a visit from

Karen Moore-Douglas, our Niagara

Regional Representative for Celebrate

Recovery. This visit affirmed that we are

operating properly within the “DNA” and

guidelines of Celebrate Recovery. We

are now an “official” CR program and we

are listed as a group location on the

Celebrate Recovery Canada Website

A recent interaction with one of our

Mission Centre volunteers highlighted the

importance of our inter-connectedness as

the body of Christ in Welland. Walking

alongside individuals suffering with life

controlling hurts, habits and hang ups can

be a difficult process. Our volunteer

mentioned to me that one of her

neighbours was benefitting from

participating in Celebrate Recovery. This

relationship provided nonthreatening

support and input to the participant from

a Christian who is a member of the local

church community. It was reassuring to

see the church in action. We are in this

together. Perhaps God has strategically

placed you in the life of someone who is

really struggling with a hurt, habit or hang

up. As we work together, we can see

God’s hand moving, transforming lives

and families. Are you willing?

(L to R) Evelyn Spyker, Peter Spyker

Jr. and Peter Spyker Sr. answered the

challenge on our wish list in the last

edition of the Newsletter!

They took on the chore of closing off

the office door between two offices

at the Mission Centre.

That led to painting the offices, new

flooring, and bathroom renovation.

They provided all the labour and

materials.

Praise God for these people and their

generosity!

Thank you for Serving in this manner.

God often leads people to the various divisions of Open Arms Mission.

These folks often deal with anger and frustration that takes control of their lives.

Through Open Arms Mission, they get the time and support needed to get their lives back on track.

They can be retrained, employed, and rebuild their faith as they look forward to a better future.

It is this kind of outcome we hope that all of the ministry visitors will reach.

We want you to know the number of lives you impact

when you support the Mission with your gifts, your time, and your prayers.

We share stories like Ron’s (featured under the Redeemed Lives page)

so you get to know some of the people who are represented in those numbers.

I want to thank you for helping to provide assistance, hope, and love to the needy in our community,

also for helping Ron and so many other individuals who need our help to get their lives back on track.

Thank you for helping us to strengthen our communities … one person at time.

The love that makes miracles happen begins with people like you.

We witness miracles on a daily basis through the Mission Ministries

where our every thought, word, and deed is inspired by God’s unconditional love.

For those who visit our Food/Hygiene Bank,

have access to resources, a hug, a prayer, and a helping hand are all miracles, too.

For the guests at our Saturday Lunches, a hot plate of food is a miracle.

For the men at our Redeemed Lives Journey,

overcoming years of struggle and finding real men to fellowship with is a miracle.

For both men and women involved in the Celebrate Recovery Program,

the Biblical road to recovery is miraculous.

For those who visit Redeemed Goods, will experience love, respect, assistance, and great deals,

it’s heartwarming and very helpful in provision, service, and training.
