THE CIRCUIT RIDER
Vol. 16 No. 3 March 2016
FROM THE PASTOR
Many church members have spent time at church
camp or on church retreats….and usually with
memories of these events come the songs that were
sung. One of those songs (back in the day, of course) was “We are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder”. One
of the verses asks the question, “Sinner, do you love
my Jesus?”
Jesus asked his followers to love God, to love their neighbor, and to love themselves. These three loves
are ones that are shared with people of other
religious faiths as well, but the fourth one—to love
Jesus is the distinctive Christian note. For the
Christian to love God is to love God as seen in Jesus. To love the neighbor is to love the one whom
Jesus made clear to be our neighbor. To love
oneself is to love the one whom Jesus so loved that
he would go to his death for that person.

(From the Pastor continued)
To love Jesus is to take up our cross and follow. The
cross is not tragedy laid on us by life without our
permission. Our cross is our share of “the burden of
the world’s divine regret” which we voluntarily accept
in order to take up some of Christ’s load. The same
camp song mentioned earlier goes on to say, “If you
love Him, why not serve Him?” We serve Jesus by
joining Him as He serves the world.
Will you be a soldier of the cross this Lenten season?
Together in service,
Pastor Linda

BECKY’S PAD PROJECT
Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) have their primary job. Becky's is teaching. She teaches
biology, history and life skills. They are also required to take on secondary projects
during their 27 months of service. Becky, along with another PCV, are taking on The Pad
Project from another PCV who is ending her service soon and coming home.
Becky writes about The Pad Project.
"This project focuses on keeping girls in school. Menstruation plays a major role in girls
feeling uncomfortable at school, so many choose to stay home during that week. These
girls therefore tend to miss many days of school and fall behind in learning."
To that end, I am trying to collect items for THE PAD PROJECT
Collection Box will be in the Narthex
ITEMS NEEDED
Fleece
100 % Cotton Material
Flannel
Thread
Hand Sewing Needles
PUL material JoAnn Fabrics has this. This is material that is used to make
diaper covers. It has a waterproof side and cloth like material on top. It costs
more so, if several people want to get 1/2 yard, that’s fine.
Update on Becky
8 months down. 19 more to go. But who is counting?
Becky is doing good. After the Christmas break, she went to a malaria training event.
Then she wrote a children's book. As part of her Malaria Project, she and another local
student graduate will be going into the schools and teaching students about malaria.
They will demonstrate by hanging a net. Then have sessions on teaching how to hang a
net, wash and repair holes. Also they plan to paint a mural about malaria. Also, they will
be going to the health clinic to talk to the pregnant women in the maternity ward, as well
as talking to the community.
Her primary job is teaching. She teaches biology form 1 and 3, history form 1, and life
skills form 2 and 4. Form 1 would be comparable to grade 9 or freshmen class, etc.
Not all the students have come back for term 2 after Christmas. A lot of students are
staying home to help plant crops. Some students have transferred to other schools,
some can't afford to attend as they have to pay to attend. In September, Becky says
there were 100 or more in class. Now she says form 1 maybe 40, form 2 about 70-80,
form 3 maybe 50 if they all come, and form 4 has 40. Becky says all the students do not
have chairs or desks to sit on. Therefore they sit on the cold cement floor. She says in
term one, all the girls in her form one class were sitting on the cement floor.
