As many of you are aware, Katie Harris andMonique Lenczycki are leaving their Boardpositions at Gold Ribbon Rescue. I want tothank them so much for their dedication, and all the time, effort and spirit that theyhave invested in Gold Ribbon. Katie andMonique were among the first members ofGRR, and were instrumental in getting usoff the ground and guiding us to where weare today. They will be sorely missed.

Losing two Board members after so long inservice is a major change for any

Their freshoutlook and enthusiasm are going to pavethe way for Gold Ribbon Rescue to continueits mission to aid goldens and their ownersand educate people about responsible dogownership and this wonderful breed!

It is almost appropriate that we make thesechanges at this time of year, for it is atSuper Bowl week-end, while everyone elsegets worked up about the football, that I

can’t help but reminisce about how all ofthis began...

It was the Saturday before the Super Bowl,1998. I led Linda Willard and othermembers of the Austin Golden RetrieverClub and the Heart of Texas LabradorRescue down to a small town in South Texaswhere we rescued 93 dogs… and GoldRibbon began.

I found the dogs through a contact in SanAntonio and convinced the caretaker toturn them over to me.

Letter from the President–continued from Page 1.We headed south at dawn with trailers filledwith dog crates, not knowing what wewould find. The dogs were kept in pig runs. They were stinky, wet and still wanting anyattention they could get. Then more dogsarrived packed into a small livestock trailerand the back of a pickup truck under asheet of metal mesh. We brought themback to my house in Georgetown wherethere were volunteers waiting to identify

and inventory the dogs, teams ofdog washers, trainer/evaluators,veterinarians and photographers.

There was also a camera crew from one ofthe television stations—who gave out myhome phone number to call for informationabout the dogs.

My phone never stopped ringing, and byNovember, the dogs were placed, the clubwas exhausted and Gold Ribbon Rescuewas begun.

Two of these first rescue dogs were Katie’sMaggie and Monique’s Blue. Many of youhave met Maggie as she and Katie didMANY home visits; and Blue is the source

for much of Monique’s expertise onthunderstorm fear and ear problems.Monique and Katie were at the very firstGRR meeting, and they (along with TimTierney, our Treasurer) were drafted to GRRduties right off. They have since donealmost every job in rescue and have sharedtheir love of goldens and rescue to recruitfoster homes, adopters, and volunteers.

Please join me in thanking Katie andMonique for their service, expertise andguidance. And please welcome Dana andKathy as they try to fill some very big shoes.

Page 3: MARCH TH EDITION Time, Effort and Spirit Define GRR · 2010. 11. 10. · Heartworms (Dirofilaria immitus) are literally worms that invade a dog’s heart and lung vessels. Heartworms

Editor’s Note: Canine Heartworm infestation isa real and prevalent problem here in Texas aswell as throughout the United States. Weknow — we've had our share of rescue dogsneeding heartworm treatment. With springfast approaching the time is right to repeatthis article about Canine Heartworm Diseasewritten by Monique Lenczycki, published inthe Gazette in 2000. The followinginformation is meant to supplement thatprovided by your veterinarian. Nothing canreplace a complete history and physicalexamination performed by your vet.

Heartworms (Dirofilaria immitus) areliterally worms that invade a dog’s heartand lung vessels. Heartworms aretransmitted via female mosquitoes. Themosquito bites an infected dog and thenharbors the parasite. When they biteanother animal the parasite istransmitted to that animal. If the animalis not on heartworm preventative, infestation results. All dogs, regardless ofbreed or housing location (indoor or out,by water or not) are equally susceptibleto this disease.

There are two components to theheartworm process. The mosquitoestransmit immature worms, Microfilaria, into the dog’s tissues. The microfilariamature into adult heartworms and moveinto the bloodstream to take upresidence in the dogs heart. These adultsreproduce more microfilaria and thecycle perpetuates, producing more andmore adult worms in the dog's heart. Theentire maturation cycle can take up to 6months.

Heartworm disease represents a serioushealth risk to the animal. The wormsinterfere with the normal bloodflow fromthe right side of the heart into the lungs. If left untreated they reduce the dogs

quality of life, cause congestive heartfailure, organ damage and ultimatelydeath.

Signs and symptoms of heartwormdisease vary depending on the durationof infection. Dogs may not show anysigns in the early stages. As theheartworms grow and mature, symptoms include fatigue, tiring easilyafter exercise, occasional to persistentcough and anemia. As the case advances, congestive heart failure may developalong with liver, kidney and blood flowproblems.

If your dog is diagnosed withheartworms, he/she can be treated. However, treatment is much more costly(up to 4-5 times the cost of a year'ssupply of prevention) and difficult on thedog, than prevention. Current treatmentmethods consist of hospitalizing the dogand giving injections of an arsenical (yesarsenic) drug to kill the adult worms. Theinjections are painful and the dogremains sore for awhile. Complicationssuch as vomiting, failure to eat, drugreactions, blood clots in the lungs, etc.can arise but are fairly rare.

After the treatment, the animal must bekept confined and quiet for 3-4 weeks asdetermined by your veterinarian. The dogis not allowed any activity that increaseshis/her heart rate. This rest period is donebecause the adult worms, now dead, must be reabsorbed and eliminated bythe body. During this clean up phase, aportion of dead worm can move into theblood vessels of the lungs and cause aclot (embolus) which can be life-threatening. The “rest” portion of thetreatment is essential to ensure the petssafety. After treatment, the dog is placed

on heartworm preventative to preventre-infection and kill any remainingmicrofilaria that might still be resident inthe tissues. Dogs not placed onpreventative can become reinfested.

Heartworm disease is completelypreventable. Several products are on themarket today which prevent heartwormsby killing the microfilaria. Most are givenin a single monthly dose and must begiven year round for the remainder of thedogs’ life. Years ago, it was felt there wereheartworm “seasons”, and thatpreventative was only necessary duringcertain months. This has proven false andthe prevention must be given year roundto afford adequate protection.

Some Heartworm preventionpreparations have flea control and/orworming agents in the once monthly pillto kill a variety of parasites for yourconvenience. Check with yourveterinarian to determine which is rightfor your pet. Heartworm preventionmanufacturers actually warranty theeffectiveness of the prevention. Themakers of Sentinel/Interceptor andHeartGard will pay for heartwormtreatment if your dog is on their productfor at least six months and becomesheartworm positive. Prevention is notonly best, it comes with insurance! For more information visit theHeartworm Society atwww.heartwormsociety.org

Note: Gold Ribbon Rescue tests all rescuedogs for heartworms and starts them onpreventative. GRR mandates that all rescuedogs be given heartworm preventative forthe remainder of it’s life.

submitted by Mary FaloonBecky, our golden retriever and Willie,my Down’s syndrome son, moved intothe yard ahead of me. Suddenly, Beckyraced forward barking furiously at ayoung man who emerged from thecrawl space under the house. SeeingBecky, he backed up quickly. He wastrapped. He knew the dog could easilyenter his hideaway, and his facedisplayed his fear. But Becky held herground, she was waiting for me toevaluate the situation, and tell her whatto do.

“It’s o.k., Becky, he’s a friend” I toldWillie. Becky stopped her barking, as Imoved quickly, unlocking the backdoor.“Willie, don’t let her out again until themen leave, please. There are three ofthem working under the house. They’refixing it for us. Becky didn’t know theywere here and the man startled her. Shewanted to protect you. Becky loves you,Willie.” Willie smiled. “I know, Mom.”

Becky was a special dog. We adoptedher from the Golden Retriever Rescuegroup, known as Gold Ribbon Rescue. These volunteers rescue abandongolden retrievers, their favorite breed, and find new homes for hundreds of

them each year. First, the dogs areexamined and treated by a local vet forany neglected medical problems. Nextthe volunteers foster the dogs todetermine individual temperments. They are then adopted into homesconsistent with their personalities. Thefamilies they join are also closelystudied to determine whether they canand will provide a good home.

Becky spent her first three years with amale dog of the same age. They wereraised and trained by a young soldier atFort Hood, who had to find new homesfor his dogs when he shipped out forDesert Storm. The dogs were separatedby Gold Ribbon Rescue because thevolunteers knew the dogs would bondmore quickly to a new owner if theycould not be dependent upon eachother. Also, both dogs had been fieldtrained, but Becky shied from the gun, although she was a good retriever. Hermale buddy promised to be an excellenthunting dog. Nevertheless, he watchedlovingly as I led her off the day of heradoption.

I felt sorry for the male, and could notget his loving expression out of my

mind. I finally called MauraPhelan, who had fostered them, and I asked if the male stillneeded a home. I was ready totake him if he was still waitingfor adoption. Maura laughed,“Don’t worry about him, Mary.He already is sleeping onsomeone else’s bed. They lookforward to finishing his fieldtraining. He has great promisefor hunting.” I was relieved. Twoyoung dogs would have beentoo much for me to handle, andhe was a big, strong male. Becky

was smaller than usual, medium sized, abeautiful golden brown.

I took advantage of her retriever skillsby encouraging her to bring thenewspaper in each morning. Always shelooked up and down the street to see if

neighbors were watching. With anaudience, her gait became a gloriousprance as she carried the paper to thehouse. She shamelessly loved to showoff. Goldens were first bred fromRussian circus dogs and English fielddogs. Becky obviously has not lost anyof the showmanship.

Becky and I trained with Texas TherapyPet Pals, and now go to Austin StateMental Hospital to visit with thechildren and adolescent patients. Sheloves being with the children althoughoften comes home exhausted from herwork. She is accompanied by a St.Bernard and a retired greyhound. Theyare dear friends, always happy to seeeach other. To the casual observer, itappears that the dogs do nothing out ofthe ordinary. Such is not the case. If achild was fearful or unfriendly, none ofthe dogs would approach the child. Thedogs knew, and never forcedthemselves on anyone. They appearedto intuitively know what each childneeds.

Each time we visit, Becky wears abandanna. When she hears the dresser

drawer opening, she comes running topoke her nose among the many colorfulchoices. I soon learned that she haddefinite color preferences from one dayto the next. There was no pattern. Shewas the ultimate female, and felt herchoices did not need to be justified.

We visit with the patients in thedayroom and the attendants bringthem out to see us in groups of five toten at a time. One Saturday, a teenagegirl, probably fifteen (going on twenty-five) came out with her group. She wasobviously in a snit. The body language, which is often exquisitely developed byher age group, was beyond compare.Ignoring us, the young woman satdown on the floor away from the dogsand other teenagers. She leanedagainst the wall with knees pulled up infront of her. Adults and dogs ignoredher. After about ten minutes, Becky andI walked over to her. “Would you like tomeet Becky?” I asked. She ignored thequestion, but it was Becky’s cue tomake her move.

Becky sat down between the younglady’s knees and wiggled her butt back, snuggling between her legs as close tothe girl as she possibly could get.Settled in, Becky whipped around andgave the pouting face a quick lick, theever enduring dog kiss. The youngwoman melted. She tightly huggedBecky.

The dogs seem to know what each childneeds. I watched as a teenager laydown on the floor with his body asclose to Becky’s as possible. He gentlystroked her soft fur. They spent thewhole visiting period together, andneither moved except for the gentlefingers that continually entwined withher long silky fur.

One ten year old, freckled-face boy,who could easily have been the childdown the street, said, “This is thesecond time I have been here. I don’tthink I could have made it last timewithout the dogs.” I resolved that Beckyand I will visit the children as long as we

are able.

To return to our workmen, they were from theDominican Republic, recommended by acontractor whospecialized in foundationrepairs. The leader of thethree was the only onewith adequate English forthe two of us to converse.(My Spanish is practicallynon-existent.) When thejob was finished, theywere loading their truckjust when we wanted to

go out on an errand. They had parked inour driveway, so I asked Willie not to letBecky out of the yard until they left.Consequently, Willie and Becky stoodby the fence while the men prepared to leave.

When they finished their task, Willielooked at the man Becky hadfrightened earlier, and motioning hishand in the universal sign, said, “Come ‘ere.”

The man stared at my son. Heunderstood, but obviously didn’t wantto comply. Again Willie motioned withhis hand and said, “Come ‘ere.” His tonewas slightly more insistent.

The labor boss said, “He wants you tocome over to him.” I knew the situationwas stressful for the men. In the LatinAmerican cultures the retardates arenever seen in public for parents arefearful their child will be taken fromthem. Still, I did not intercede.

With obvious discomfort, the manmoved around the truck and drew closeto Willie and the dog. Reaching acrossthe fence, Willie took the man’s handand gently laid it on the dog’s head.Becky did not move. Willie released hisgrip. He only wanted the man to realizethe dog would not harm him. Withobvious relief, the man smiled as hereturn to his truck and climbed in. Wecalled our good-bye as they drove fromthe driveway.

Editor’s note: Becky LaBrum has recentlyexpanded her volunteer role with GRR to Co-Intake Director. What this means is that Becky, along with Kathy Burton, are on the front linesof rescue work, bringing in the Goldens thatdesperately need our help. What she’s learningis that she can’t keep them all!

by Becky LaBrumWith two big dogs in the house already, Iwasn’t planning on a foster dog, too. However… with Christmas just around thecorner, the foster situation for GRR wastight, and after I saw a photo of 2-year-oldDonna in her Town Lake cage, lookingscared and bedraggled—who could refusethat sad little face? “All right, she can stayhere,” I said, “but only until right afterChristmas.” A few days later Beth’s carpulled into the driveway and out poppedDonna, covered with mats the size ofsoftballs and dragging Beth behind herlike the tail of a kite. She whirled aroundthe backyard at top speed, too excited tostop. In the house, she raced across all thefurniture (at one point she even traveled afew steps along the back of the livingroom sofa), snatched dog toys and threwthem down, jumped on me, jumped upon the counters… “Eeek! What am I infor!?” I thought, and then, as a red blurzoomed past me for the hundredth time,“Good luck getting her to hold still for abath.” Nonetheless I resolutely collectedoatmeal shampoo and towels, approached her with the hose… andDonna actually settled right down to bebathed. Guess she was happy to losethose mats and grime. As I toweled herdry, her clean fur began to sparkle in thesunshine—and I discovered that her cleverhead was covered with cowlicks that allstood on end in a frizzy halo, making herlook like a dogie Albert Einstein!

After her first mad rush through thehouse, Donna proved to be quite the lady.

She was housetrained and wentto the door when she needed to

go out. She didn’tclimb on thefurniture or chewwhat she shouldn’t.She was interested inour cat but paidattention when thekitty told her with aglare and a hiss tostay away. She knewa few commandsand responded to“sit” by almostflinging herself backwards onto herbottom— very cute! She was familiar withthe leash and ran to the front door assoon as we picked it up. Of course, shealso proved to be a litter-pan raider and acompost-pile excavator, with so muchenergy that she wanted to play fetch atone in the morning. Oh well…nobody’sperfect!

About a week after Donna’s arrival, KathyBurton and I were discussing where tomove her, and... “Er, well, it would be ashame to bounce her around,” I hedged, admiring Donna as she lounged on herdog bed. The Kelly green cover set off hershiny auburn fur perfectly. “She can stayhere a little longer.”

As the next week went by, we discoveredthat Donna likes to play fetch withherself—she’ll seize a toy, hurl it forwards, and then give chase and repeat the

performance. She can generate surprisingforce—hearing a tennis ball go BO-O-OING off the sliding glass door, I bawledat my husband, “Eric, I have told you amillion times NOT to play fetch with themin the house!!”… and then realized thatEric was innocently sitting in his office atthe end of the hall.

Around New Year’s, as I distributed Kongsand watched all the dogs bustle off to liedown side by side, I found myselfthinking, “Gosh, what a nice picture.”Then I thought, “Are you nuts—do youreally want three dogs?!” But then Ithought, “Can I really let Donna walk outthe door?” The answer was no. Donna hascome to stay!

Sometimes I wish Donna couldtell me her story. She hadalready been spayed whenAnimal Control collected her,and given the fact that sheknows commands and ishousebroken and walks prettynicely on a leash, somebodytook good care of her for along time. But—how did sheend up on the streets, mattedand dirty, with infected earsand heartworm? We’ll never

know. I guess the most important thing, though, is that she’s safe and happynow… and we are so happy to have her.

Spring Clean Your Cabinets and Closets for GRR

On December 15, 2002, Gold RibbonRescue celebrated the holiday seasonwith a fun and festive gathering at theAmerican Legion Hall. Sixty-five goldenretriever-loving partygoers feasted on abuffet of ham, turkey, meatballs,

cheese and various other goodiesand helped raise money for GRR.

The silent auction featured asigned original print of a firefighter at Ground Zero and his

search andrescueGoldenRetriever. Itwas down to thewire to see whoended up takingthis wonderfulprint home withthem as thebidding was verycompetitive! Thenew and improvedboutique wasrolled out at theparty and

attendees werequickly buying the

new items. Thanks to all those whomade the boutique opening such asuccess!

Overall the party was a huge successand helped GRR start 2003 off with anice cushion in the bank account! If you missed the party, we hope youwill join us for other social activities thisyear, like the Golden Afternoon in thePark scheduled for April 5th. It’s a great way to meet new friends andlearn about volunteer opportunitieswith GRR.

by Kathy BurtonIn 2002 Gold Ribbon Rescue took in 148dogs, of those over 25% were between theages of six months and two years. Go toany local animal shelter, you quickly findthe percentages are much higher.

Why are so many dogs in this particular agegroup? They were all once cute, adorablepuppies that someone took home withgreat hopes of having a wonderfulcompanion and friend.

To find the answer to that question let’slook at the reasons our volunteers typicallyhear when owners call to surrender a youngdog “he keeps digging out, running away, digging in the yard, knocks the childrenover, chews on the furniture, gets into thetrash, barks all the time, soils the house, won’t come when called, jumps on people, tears things up, I can’t control him, heneeds more attention, I don’t have enoughtime for him” In other words he is being adog.

Golden Retrievers are considered to be inthe top five breeds for intelligence based ona study that became the best selling bookThe Intelligence of Dogs but even intelligentdogs need three things to become a petyou can live with and enjoy: Management,Leadership and Training.

MMaannaaggeemmeenntt is another word for controllingthe environment. It involves makingchanges in the dog’s immediate livingconditions and situations to help preventsome problems from occurring oreliminating problems that have become

ingrained. Rather than punish or blamingthe dog for acting like a dog you can:

Confine to a safe area using baby gates orcrating (put a toy or chew in that the dognormally does not get except whenconfined—so that this experience isenjoyable for the dog rather than apunishment).

Keep counters cleared of all food items toremove the temptation to steal food.

Keep shoes, socks and kids toys pickedup and out of reach. Shut doors to otherrooms so he does not have access to theseitems. Close the closets.

Put wastebaskets up or behind doorswith a child proof latch hook attached tothe inside of the door.

LLeeaaddeerrsshhiipp is the act of establishingauthority over the dog in a benevolentmanner that makes the dog feel securerather than intimidated because itduplicates the Alpha role in a canine pack. This is achieved with a “me first” manner.

You eat before the dog does—always—even if it is only a piece of toast (you canhave a snack while preparing his food, it isimportant that he see you and does not geta share of your food).

You go through a doorway first (bygetting in front of him and blocking him, give the command “wait”). You nudge thedog out of the way rather than goingaround the dog if he’s blocking yourpathway (with the command “move”).

A treat is given only when the dog sits forit (even the youngest dog will naturally sit ifthe treat is held above his head and use theword “sit”).

All toys belong to you. You just let himuse them. Require a sit before giving themto him. To teach “give” requires the dog torelease the toy or ball, if he does not, say“no play” then totally ignore the dog. Whenhe catches on praise him and give the toyto him immediately. (Do not play keepaway with the dog, it causes mistrust andan overly excited dog.) When play time isover say “enough” and ignore the dog untilhe stops attempting to continue, thenpraise with “good dog”.

TTrraaiinniinngg is communication, consistency andincentive. Training can be as simple asteaching good manners. Training is givingthe dog a job by communicating what isexpected on a regular basis and rewardinghim for doing it. Training opens upopportunities for both the dog and theowner. A trained dog can go for more walksbecause it is a pleasure to walk a wellbehaved dog. A trained dog can go moreplaces and be welcomed. Proper trainingincreases a dog’s confidence, quality of lifeand may someday save his life.

All dogs deserve training, those who don’toften end up condemned to the backyardtheir entire lives, taken to a shelter or if theyare fortunate enough, surrendered to arescue organization like Gold Ribbon.

Editor’s Note: Most of the writeups weresubmitted by their foster families–and in somecases by their own paw! Be sure to check thewebsite for updates.

DannyHi Everyone! My name is Danny and it’s sonice to be in Golden territory. I can’t tell youhow much I appreciate GRR taking me in.When I walked into my foster parents homeI thought, “Now they know what makes aGolden Boy like me tick.” I love all thestuffed toys. I can carry around two at atime and I have tons of toys to choosefrom. We also have a bone basket. I just gohelp myself. I even have two Golden fostersisters and get this, my family has a bigwhite cat whom I get along with just dandy.

I have been behaving myself. I do really wellin the crate at night or if my foster parentshave to run an errand. I don’t bark or whine.I'm just a happy boy.

I know some commands; sit, shake, anddown. If my name is called and I’m in theback yard I put all my energy into coming asquickly as possible. I’m completelyhousebroken and I love everyone. I have avery soft and loving nature and I would likea home where I can get lots of hugs andkisses. I like to be groomed.....in fact it’sawesome! I would love to be yourcompanion. In fact, I think in the dictionaryunder “companion” it says, “See Danny.”

RigleyRigley is a Golden Oldie and needs a lovinghome in which to spend his golden years.Riggs, as we call him, is THE sweetest dog.He is very mellow but he enjoys going on walks and we enjoy walking himbecause he never pulls on the leash. Riggsis completely well mannered he only hasone flaw; he likes to dig. But when I gooutside with him, and bring him back inright after he goes potty he could care lessabout digging. Riggs has a ghost-like grayface that really shows off his dominantbrown eyes. At 77 pounds he is a tall, leanguy with big paws who has a great deal oflove to give.

LolaLola is just mature and calm at 8 years old,but with energy to go on walks and playwith my pup. Lola loves to snuggle up andbe pet, but is not demanding of it. She is awonderful companion.

Lola adores her tennis ball—not to retrieve, just to carry around and have with her. It iskind of fun to catch, too.

Lola is playful but appropriately demandsrespect of her boundaries. They naptogether and do a wonderful job of taking

alternate treats (with their noses a fewinches apart). Lola is extremely gentle whentaking a treat.

Lola is such a love and so easy to havearound. She loves her morning pet andbelly rub, followed by a rousing timeplaying in the back yard. She is so cute;she’ll roll over tuck her front legs up closeto her chest to get her pets.

MaggieThis is the third time Maggie, our 10-yearold girl, has appeared in the ‘adoptables’section of this newsletter. Many people arehesitant to give a senior a good homebecause they think they're “too old” andwill die soon. The benefits of owning asenior Golden like Maggie are wonderful.Senior ownership is filled with rewards anddaily joys young dogs can’t/don’t provideuntil they're older!

Some of the common misconceptionsabout seniors are addressed on ourwebsite.

Maggie, who has been nicknamed “Panda”because of her cute facial features is assweet as pie. She is very affectionate, andfrequently does the typical Goldenmaneuver on your hand to get you to startpetting her. She loves to be smothered withkisses and attention.

Please take a look and see if our Maggiecould be right for you. Maggie is just ahappy, cuddly girl with a lot to give.

RomeoWe had to name him Romeo when we sawwhat a lover he is. This sweet 2-year old boycame to us from the San Antonio shelterand as you can see he’s beautiful. AlthoughRomeo didn’t know any trainingcommands when he first arrived, he hasquickly learned his new name, to come, tosit and to potty “outside”. He is extremelyintelligent and adapting well to his newfoster home.

He is a natural retriever with a gentlepersonality. With a little training, he’ll learnto drop along with his natural instinct tofetch. He gets along great with babies, kidsand other dogs. He is very tall, slender andhandsome. Romeo just needs a lovinghome to give him some structure and thelove a Romeo deserves.

SonnyMeet Sonny. A mahogany colored 2 yearold male that is a ball playing fool. As longas there is a tennis ball around, Sonny willbe pushing it into your lap and waiting

patiently for you to throw it. You will get tothrow a slimy wet tennis ball over and overagain. And, I can guarantee that Sonny willnot be the first one to quit playing ball. Hecan catch line drives, grounders and flyballs with all four feet off the ground. If youare not playing enough ball with Sonny, hewill play by himself. He lets the ball rollaway from him and then grabs for it.

Sonny is an owner-surrender from a Militarycouple recently deployed. He has been wellcared for and shown a lot of love. Sonnyneeds a family who will be consistent withhis training. He has a lot of confidence andis very bright. I think he is a man’s dog, butthen I find him snuggled in bed with mywife so she might disagree.

Sonny is ready for a forever family. He willdo great with any family, but would beexceptional in a family with older childrenthat LIKE TO PLAY BALL!

KingKing is a sweet gentleman who is eager toplease. King has really come out of his shelland now wears a smile on his face all thetime—he just has a happy easy goingpleasant look.

I guess it just took him awhile to trusthimself to love and be loved. King reallyluxuriates in his human companionship andsomeone will be very lucky when their livesintertwine with King.

MelanieHow do you describe yourself in just a fewwords? I know... “PPrriinncceessss, looking for acastle.”

I am a very sweet, 1-½ old female, found inSan Antonio and rescued from the shelter.I’m a very quiet and calm girl, hard toimagine for someone of my age, but I seemto possess a wisdom and maturity beyondmy years. I get along wonderfully withother dogs in the house, but being aprincess, I do like my subjects to treat mewith the respect I so deserve. I must havebeen cast under the spell of a mean ol’witch because I seem to have lost thememory of much of my puppyhood years.I’m not very keen on playing and I’d muchprefer to watch the antics of others. To behonest I’d much rather cuddle up and betold what a wonderful little lady I am.

If you’re looking for a sweet, youngprincess to fill your castle and heart withlove, that would be me!

Many dogs with atypical medical expensesfind their way to Rescue. Our $250adoption fees can’t cover the costs, evenwith generous discounts from areaveterinarians. Faced with the prospect ofturning away or euthanizing Goldens withhigh medical costs, we created the“Extraordinary Golden Fund.” Donationstowards this fund go directly to the care ofGoldens like these:

Rio In our last issue you may have read aboutour “Radiant Rio” who was treated forheartworms and on his way to a happy, healthy new life. Wrong. This sweet, adorable guy began to show signs ofdistress when he would lay down or standback up. He’d get this pained look on hisface–almost a wince–and slowly easehimself down. He even began to walkaround with his hips tucked in to relievethe pain.

Rio was taken in to the vet and the Xraysshowed that he was suffering fromLumbosacral Disease. In layman’s terms, one of his vertebrae in his lower back—nearhis tail bone, was pinching the nerve andcausing severe pain. Rio is on his way to a100% recovery and dreams of the day soonto come that he’ll be back to playing ball. For all that he’s been through, Rio is a realtrooper. Tic disease, heartworm treatment

and surgery— near $2,000.

ChablisNow this girl’s story is a true, blue rescuestory. It began one evening when one ofour volunteers received a frantic call fromChablis’ owners who explained thatChablis was dying and that they could notafford the medical expenses to save herlife. They loved her so much and wouldrather give her up than see her die.

At 3am in the morning GRR volunteersheaded out in the dark of night to find asweet, 8 year old female, laying with herhead on the lap of a child for comfort. Shecouldn’t stand or walk as she wasexhausted from pain and completelydehydrated. Rushed into the EmergencyClinic, Chablis was diagnosed withPyometra. A full day was needed just toget Chablis stabilized and hydrated. Sheunderwent surgery to remove her uterus.

What they found was heart wrenching.Chablis had been suffering with a 10 lbuterus loaded with infectious materialsthat were poisoning her system. Chablishad never been spayed which could haveavoided this life-threatening condition and

costly surgery. Luckily Chablis made itthrough. One more day meant thedifference between life and death for thislovely lady. Cost of surgery andcare—$1,400.

RyeRye is a beautiful, 10 month old puppywho enjoys running and playing in thebackyard, playing fetch and romping in thewater. That was when his foster parentsnoticed that Rye had a pretty serious limp.X-rays revealed that Rye had OCD —Osteochondrosis –which basically meansthat he had an extra flap of cartilage on hisleft shoulder that had to be removed. Itwas absolutely necessary to keep Rye fromfurther pain and inevitable arthritis causedby the OCD. With the surgery now behindhim, Rye will be 100%! And that’s greatnews for this happy go-lucky guy. Cost ofsurgery and care—$1,200.

GRR’s charter dictates that general funds for

things like shots, spays, neuters, etc. cannot

be used for extraordinary procedures. All

monies for non-routine care must be raised

specifically for that purpose. The

Extraordinary Golden Fund (EGF) was created

for these special Goldens and their unusual

problems. If you can help, please make your

on-line check or credit card donation at

www.GRR-tx.com or mail it to Gold Ribbon

Rescue, Attn: Thor Fund, PO Box 956, Austin,

here at GRR thank you for your generosity
