WAITING THROUGH LENT

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. (Psalm 130:5-6)

Lent is an uneasy time, a time of yearning and wait-ing -- yearning to walk in the dawn of the “lengthening days” from which the season takes its name; and waiting to be hope-struck once more at the sight of that discarded grave cloth. The Christians of the Iona Community in Ireland capture the essence of the season in their prayer:

O God, so much of faith is waiting – like a pregnant woman waiting in hope, like a people under siege, holding out till relief comes, like the soul lost in the darkness; unable to see even a glimmer of light yet stumbling through the night because somewhere out ahead, day will surely break. Lord, be with us in our waiting. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

As the prayer implies, our waiting is preparation. These days are (literally) pregnant with possibility. At FHPC we’re fashioning experiences to lend shape and substance to this holy time. Come, and wait with us! Sundays throughout Lent, 9 & 11:15am: We gather in worship to recall the ancient Exodus pas-sage of God’s people as we search the texts for guid-ance for our contemporary Lenten journey. Wednesday Evening Vespers, March 6th, 13th & 20th, 6:30pm: Candlelight, prayer and sacred song prepare us as we gather for a meal at Christ’s table. Palm Sunday, March 24th, 9 & 11:15am: We follow our children joyfully waving palm branches as we take our places amongst the throngs cheering the Messiah’s triumphal entrance into Je-rusalem – on the back of a donkey!

Maundy Thursday, March 28th, 7pm: As a dramatic reenactment unfolds before us, we partici-pate in that final Passover meal, transformed by the love of Christ into the Lord’s Supper. The fateful events of the evening leave us departing a shad-owed sanctuary and a chancel draped in black.

Good Friday, March 29th, Noon-2:30pm: Ancient music and dim lights draw us into a time of private reflection in our sanctuary. Self-guided bulletins help us find our place in the crowds gath-ering at the foot of the Cross.

The Great Vigil of Easter, Saturday, March 30th, 7pm: The world changes before our eyes! A worship journey begun in Good Friday darkness and despair is transformed -- beginning with but a single candle -- into Resurrection light and hope. Our first Easter celebration has begun!

Easter - The Day of Resurrection, March 31st, 9 & 11:15am: Christ the Lord is risen today!! We sing our alleluias as we share our joy in wor-ship. Join us for our traditional Easter Brunch in the Fellowship Center between services.

Things are jumping here in our Mission Ministry. We have some new things to report as well as updates on what we have been doing. If our projects sound interesting or fun and you would like to help, please contact Susan Owens or Terri Schmidt. Our committee meets the second Tuesday of every month at 4:00pm in the conference room. Please join us if you want to know more about what we are doing. Extended Hands Food Bank Thanks to all of you who continue to donate your loose change in those colorful little buckets outside the Narthex doors on Sundays for Extended Hands. Every Sun-day we also continue to collect food for the Food Bank. This food is in great need and is distributed right here in Fountain Hills.

We will also collect any clothing items you wish to donate. This is a new program that they have recently started. They put the clothes in a big bin in the front of the building and anyone who is in need can rummage through and find items of the clothing.

Vivian Virden, Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt gave up a Friday evening to help serve at the Friday night Fish Fry recently. This is another way we can donate our services to help the Food Bank. The ladies were there from 4:00 to 7:00pm and felt that it was well worth the time and effort. The food bank has this Fish Fry to raise money to help run the organization. If this is something you think you would like to do, please contact Susan or Terri. One Great Hour of Sharing On Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday we will be collecting an offering for “One Great Hour of Sharing.” These donations help people around the world. It sends help during catastrophic storms and wildfires here in the

United States as well as other countries, and helps to drill for water or send medical supplies to disaster areas. Your gift goes to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and from there is distributed as needed. This is one of our major missions with the Presbyterian Church. They were there to help when the East Coast was ravaged by the Super storm “Sandy”, helping alleviate hunger and giving dignity and hope back to those people who have been through such traumatic situations. So when you receive this envelope please be sure and give. Older Wiser Loving Souls (owls) This is a program that is headed up by Terry and Tom Martin and Stan Jones. They go to Fountain View Village the first Sunday of every month and give commun-ion as well as have a service with music and a sermon. There are two services, one in the Independent Living Chapel and one in the Assisted Living Chapel. This is a very rewarding outreach to our community. They are al-ways willing to have you join them with whatever way you can help. They are always looking for people to play the piano or special music. If you are, or have ever been an Elder, and could help serve communion, this is a very wor-thy and rewarding thing to do. If this is something that interests you, you can contact Terry Martin or Stan Jones. Heifer Project We are still working out the details of how we will bring this worthwhile project into our Church. We do know that we will be implementing this program into our Vacation Bible School this summer. But as soon as we get the details worked out we will let you know about this pro-ject. This can be an on-going project and can do so much good for the poor and needy. Weekender Bag Projects/Snack Bags The Presbyterian Women are heading this project and continue to help pack backpacks once a month. The backpacks are given to children from Kin-dergarten through Junior High. The back-packs contain food for the children over the weekends. We are still working on a way to help the High School children as well as the rest of the families. We know that the Ex-tended Hands Food Bank helps these people also, but sometimes due to different circum-stances they cannot always go to the Food Bank. If you are interested in helping to pack these backpacks, you can contact Mary Alice Bivens. Changing Lives Center This center is for Women and Children who are down on their luck for whatever reason; this is the counter-part for the Phoenix Rescue Center, which is for men. We

will be going down to the Changing Lives Center in March to take used CD’s to the families to listen to. We will also be tak-ing some fun things for the kids for Easter. We will be contact-ing the project manager to find out what other things we can do to help this organization. Clothing Donations We are continuing to collect clothes for those in need. We donate these clothes items to Extended Hands Food Bank or to Save the Family. So if you have used clothes that are still in good condi-tion that you want to get out of your closet, you can bring them to the office or call Terri or Susan. Trendsetters Stan Jones reported to us that our congregation gave a total of $8,700.00 to this mission. He was proud to tell us that our church was able to fund 4 out of the 7 organizations that exist. Thank you to all who were able to give to this project. These are just some of our projects that we have going on here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church. If any of these sound like something you would like to get in-volved with, we would love to have you join us. Thank you for all your gifts of love, money and time. Actually it’s a ministry that feeds the homeless with donated cakes from several Star Bucks Stores! Three times a week boxes of cakes are picked up at different stores in the area and transported to The Justa Center (day center for homeless Veter-ans) www.Justacenter.org , The Phoenix Rescue Mission, www.thephoenixrescuemission.org, Well over 200 – 300 cakes are distributed each week and welcomed by those who have fallen on hard times. PW is supporting this ministry again in 2013 and we are looking for volunteers. Now the real reason it is called Johnny Cakes Ministry: The vision statement the volunteers decided on ‘When they had all had enough to eat, Jesus said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." John 6:12 (NIV) The Food Donation Connection provides an alternative to discarding surplus wholesome food by linking food service donors with surplus food to local hunger relief agencies. FDC does this by creating and maintaining an efficient communica-tion and reporting network that links available sources of food to those in need through these existing organizations. FHPC is one of the few churches in the area that provide the link for this distribution. Now into our sixth month of cake sharing – we can use your help! A few hours a week? Call Tom Martin or Bob Berg if YOU can drive into Phoenix at least once a month, wrap cakes at the FHPC Kitchen Monday Wednesday or Friday for about an hour, WANT TO FEED HIS SHEEP? We are only delivering cakes - right now – but the next time someone asks ‘ What is Johnny Cakes’ grab a cup of Joe and tell them all about it…. Or better yet, get involved and deliver some cakes. ‘Hunger Happens Everyday’

EASTER BOXES FOR OUR TROOPS On Friday, February 15, Violet Wieder and Sandy Heunisch came over to help sort and separate all items that had come in since December. There is now enough items on hand to where our Easter Boxes will be filled tightly to the top. Thanks ladies for helping again. And I would like to extend a very special thank-you to those who have stepped up and responded to the request for needed snacks. This is one item that cannot be stored up for months and months – must be fresh and tasty. And to those of you who really did some-thing that was really needed; you came forward and made a donation to help with the shipping costs, which of course had gone up in January. FHPC is such a giving Church and I know from the “Thank-You’s” received, that our de-ployed Troops think so too; they do indeed know that we are a caring and giv-ing Church. The last thing needed for the Easter boxes are some handwritten notes. I will have some cards on hand to pass around but if you feel the urge to sit down and write out a special Easter greeting, that would really be something I know would make our guys and gals feel appreciated and supported. The lights dimmed, the projectors were humming, we were not sure what we were seeing but, oh yes…there she goes ... the Woman of Samaria. We can see her in our mind's eye -or was she there moving between the tables? Will she be amongst us – at our gathering? No, it is a video – a dramati-zation, but it feels like someone is here – yes, right here. I bet we find her near the dessert table…wearing a loose

dress, the color of burlap, somewhat like a long potato sack, cinched with a twisted cord of rope. It reaches down to a few inches above her sandaled feet. She is wearing a headpiece of the same color. It falls in folds halfway down her back. On her right shoulder she is bal-ancing a water jug, rather large in my eyes. Surely it's heavy when it's full. There she goes ... the Woman of Samaria ...walking to the well. She travels down the well-worn path from town as it twists and turns, intimately acquainted, in her solitari-ness, with every curve, every boulder and every lonely blade of grass. Could this be the woman who is to intro-duce our guest speaker tonight? Tunelessly she hums into the stillness - scuffing her feet as we can almost see that she raises little wisps of dust. The perspiration beads on her upper lip and runs in rivulets down her back and between her breasts. The room grew darker and then she – The Woman of Samaria will tell us the story of HOPE and how Jesus changed her life…..How healing can be seen in many ways, not just physical, not just emotional but spiritual as well - The FHPC Drama Team will in-troduce our guest speaker they will encouraged us to ‘Run into town and share the Good News’ that we, no matter the burden, no longer need the water jug - we have HIM.

What does - A Big Blue Bus, A Phoenix M.D. and The PW have in Common? More than one million children in the U.S. today are homeless. As a result, many of them lack regular health care. Ten years ago, a pedia-trician in Phoenix, Arizona became the first to run his hospital’s mobile medical clinic – a doctor’s office on wheels. His goal was to help homeless children get the medical attention they need. Their problems –from sexually transmitted diseases to infections from living outdoors – are often very differ-ent than those of other children. The converted Winnebago known as “Big Blue” has now served almost 7,000 chil-dren. Dr. Randy Christensen staff physician at Phoenix Children's Hospital and medical director of Crews'n Health mobile, a mobile medical clinic that pro-vides health care to homeless children is our guest speaker for the March 16th Gathering of PWP ! As always the food, the atmosphere and most noticeably the Fellowship Center will be packed. No empty seats and you could hear a pin drop. We wanted to know, we wanted to learn, we needed to understand what made this ‘Hero’ do what he does. There is no way to put it in words in half an hour or several hours. The compassion, drive, the visible empathy ! It seems that the best way to share with you this month what will be hap-pening at the Gathering ,is an excerpt from his book . Yes, we are selling books. CRISIS - When I first saw him, I could tell he was sick. His face was pale. The look in his eyes was vacant and confused. He held the side of the van wall, looking as if he were on the verge of collapse. His short brown hair was sweat stained. His wide mouth was rimmed in white, and his broad forehead was beaded with sweat. He was wearing khaki trousers and a blue shirt that had the name of a tool company on the front. His arms were tanned; his face was broad with sun-bleached eyebrows and blue eyes. If I’d walked past him on the street, I would never have

known he was homeless. He looked like your typical teen-age boy, with an athletic build and a friendly smile, the

kind of boy who could have been an all-star athlete or a gifted student or the editor of the school news-

paper, if only he hadn’t been sick and homeless. But he was homeless. And the

day he came to the van, one late afternoon on a day blistering with heat, he was ready to die.

“Randy.” It was my nurse-practitioner, Jan Put-nam. I had been in one of the van exam rooms,

stocking supplies, and at the alarm in her voice I stuck my head out. I could tell immediately he was

very ill. I took three long steps to grab him. He fell limply against my shirt. My heart lurched, and I felt galvanized into action. “Jan, let’s get him in the back room. We need vitals right away. ” But she was already pulling out the equipment. She could always anticipate my thoughts. The van was a mobile medical unit, as close to a real hospital as possible, if a hospital can be crammed into a Winnebago. The exam room was only feet a way, down a tiny hallway. Everything was sparkling clean. I laid him down. He moaned, the paper cover on the exam table crackling under him. The white lights above were bright. He looked defenseless in his blue shirt, baggy tan pants, and tennis shoes. It seemed like a lot of clothes to be wearing in an Arizona heat wave that was topping 108 degrees. “Tell me how you are feeling,” I said, pulling on gloves. “Sick, dude.” He opened his bleary blue eyes at me. “Man, I’m tired. I’ve been sleeping now for . . . days.” His voice trailed off. His skin was flushed, and I could feel the heat coming off him. It was proba-bly from the sun. There was an underlying sweet smell of sick-ness on him. Sweat rolled down his cheeks, the tops of which were stained bright by fever. “Sleeping where?” Jan asked, bus-tling around the exam room. “Uh, under some bushes. Not far.” He closed his eyes as if dizzy. “I can’t even remember how I got here. Guess I walked.” He made a small choking cough. “Dizzy.”

O.W.L.S – A grassroots movement ( Yes, here at FHPC- since 2011) this one driven by the compassion of our church community. The term implies that the creation of the movement and the group supporting it are natural and spontaneous, in nature, the PW is certainly spontaneous and supportive! Grassroots movements are often at the local level, as many volunteers in the community give their time to support the local effort. Keep on believing Through major life challenges, Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp has learned to walk by faith and cling to his hope in Christ. While he was growing up, Camp’s family (which includes a brother with Down syndrome) struggled with pov-erty. When Camp was just 23, his wife of several months died of cancer. The first song Camp wrote after her death was the chart topper “I Still Believe.” In the chorus he sings: I still believe in Your faithfulness I still believe in Your truth I still believe in Your holy word Even when I don’t see, I still believe. Camp says trusting in God during life’s valleys takes lots of courage “You can say, “All right, Lord, I don’t get it, but I’m going to trust you,’ and go to the only One (who) offer life and hope and peace and joy.” -C. Sabbath Day Bible Study (formerly Pastor’s Bible study) Between Between our two worship services each Sunday is the Sabbath Bible Study. This study period was formerly known as the “Pastor’s Bible Study” led by Pastor Bill. In January a second worship ser-vice, “home by another way,” was started and our pastor was unable to continue with the Pastor’s Bible Study. But spiritual growth through Bible study is too important to discontinue. Pastor Bill asked John Bivens to lead the study continuation as the Sabbath Bible Study. Bill and John meet each week in prepa-ration and study. Sabbath Bible Study meets in the Adult Center for an hour each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. after the hospi-tality period. Peo-ple who want to attend “home by another way” are encouraged to join in the Bible Study even if they need to leave at 11:15. The study at this time is the Gospel of John. The Lenten Season corresponds with the chapters of John being studied, thereby increasing the depth of our un-derstanding of this very important time in our Christian church calendar. Every-one is welcomed to attend and partici-pate. It is an open and friendly opportu-nity to grow together spiritually as we seek to know God’s will for our lives. Please join us. - John Bivens

Blessed Beginnings Ministry (formerly offered on Sunday Morning at 9:00 am) Due to our Intergenerational Service at 11:15 am., we are offering Blessed Beginnings Ministry during that time for ages infants - kindergarten if families choose not to keep younger ones with them or if a child needs extra attention. We will always offer more to provide a Christian ministry with children - even the babies. The Way (formerly Wednesday evening Family Night) On Wednesday evenings, after din-ner, Pastor Bill leads the adults in a one hour Bible study from 6:30 – 7:30p.m. Meeting from 5 – 6pm, the Elementary kids are still moving through The Big God Story in the Old Testament. The ministry has worship, music, traditions, storytel-ling, response and small group con-versation and activity time. We en-joyed David and Johanna and Marilyn Pape as part of the Storytel-ling in February. Dinner and Auction fundraiser for the Presbyterian Youth Triennium will have been March 3rd. Each month we are blessed to have a small group who are assigned one week a month for either a social or service time. 30 Hour Famine is both social and service since we will be going to Changing Lives Center to serve breakfast to women and children. March 22nd is Faith and Family Night for teens, kids and parents who desire to attend. Tickets are on sale in March. See Debby DeBernardi. We all meet in the Fellowship Center at 6:00 pm for an eve-ning meal and fellowship time before splitting up at 6:30 pm for our classes. If you come for dinner we ask for a small donation of $5.00 per adults. (All children eat free). Come and join us for a real family gathering of food and knowledge.

Men’s Bible Study Inquiring Minds Want to Know How many of us can say we really un-derstand the Bible? It is full of interest-ing stories. Stories that take place in distant lands and remote times that have little to do with the 21st century. Really? The ancient customs are strange – their language foreign. And yet how much has human nature changed from the centuries past? If you are interested in mysteries, the Bible has them. How about intrigue? Yes, it can be found there. You can also find the dark side of life – murder, lust, sex, robbery, slavery, famine, bat-tles and wars. The Bible also includes the lighter side of life with hope, love, faith, and service to others. Stories may be found on all of these subjects, and you may find that some stories mirror today and perhaps even your life. Millions of people of many different religious persuasions throughout the world rely upon the Bible as -the source of spiri-tual direction. Are you one of those? Inquiring minds want to know about the person of Jesus Christ, ways to strengthen your personal relationship with him, the context, old and new, and the importance of a moral compass for your life. The Bible provides informa-tion for assistance in your spiritual journey. You have the opportunity to join a growing number of men in our church who have inquiring minds and want to know more about what God is calling us to do. We meet at 7:00 a.m. each Thursday morning in the Adult Center for coffee, donuts, open discussion, study and fellowship. The hour is early but gives you a great start for the new day. My favorite holy season is here! I love Christmas when we reflect upon how God came to live with us, but Easter assures me that we will live and rule with Him forever! During our second service the symbols of Lent and Easter will be our “show and tell” time for kids as we follow Je-sus on the journey to the cross and then give thanks for his loving sacrifice and resurrection life he offers us! And, as the teens will be learning, there is a day coming when God Himself will restore both the nature of his original relationship with his children and the original state of crea-tion! Just like the tomb opened on Easter Sunday opening the way to everlasting life, I pray every person opens his or her heart, mind, soul, and strength to receive this wonder-ful gift. As a way to open hearts anew to welcome the risen savior each family with children will receive an “Open Up To Lent” packet with a bible reading and prayer each day from Ash Wednesday through Holy Saturday. Perfect for kids and the whole family. Easter will again have the Easter egg hunt. Easter Sunday Worship begins at 9:00am March 31st as we share the joy of new hope in our “Resurrection Morning” service. Di-rectly after worship we will have an Easter Egg Hunt for all children. There will be a complimentary Easter Brunch for all who wish to stay followed by our second service ‘home by another way’ at 11:15 am in the Sanctuary.

with a couple of “Golden Eggs” for special prize eggs to be redeemed in the Fellowship Center during Easter Brunch. Craft and activity areas will be hosted in the Fel-lowship Center to continue the message and celebration of the Good News for children of all ages. The Music Ministry is active, and full of wonderful people doing what has been, for the most part of our lives, what God has called us to do. Some-how, some way, praise His work through music. We are called to do this, to willingly give time and effort, hours of rehearsal, interpreting what will

give the best sound, the best silence, and to give our atten-tion to what may bring our hearts around to rejoice and to acknowledge the deep, deep love of God, and His only Son. There are people who come up to me after each wor-ship service, letting me know how they appreciate certain anthems, or preparations for worship provided by the Cele-bration Singers, and how comfortable the music makes them when they come in to worship. I hear them compli-menting the Preludes, Offertories and Postludes provided by Dorothy Parris, Caryl Bates, and the Celebration Ring-ers. I hear them complimenting the unique music of the Pear-wood Recorders, and the compliments given when children sing in our service. The congregation, and your love of God, and His inspiration through all of us is truly what keeps our music flowing. The Lenten season brings mu-sic which focus on Christ's life and death, yet, we celebrate that all year through, as powerful as it is. His love never gives up. The 11:15 am service, "home by another way" is going very well. I love to hear Bill preach, so, hearing him

preach twice in one day is a treat. The music we play is working well for those who attend. There are new and familiar tunes providing styles and blends of in-strumentation that can be truly unique to this addi-tional service. I am seeing folks that attend both ser-vices, able to appreciate the extra hour of wor-ship. That only benefits those who may be new to our church, to be mixing with those who have long been a part of our church congregation. These are folks who help welcome, comfort, and attend to these people who are considering being a part of our denomination. We've been given this unique opportunity to keep our church strong, and truly offer an extension in time, and broaden the style of worship to be a church inclu-sive. Soon, the flowers of Easter will fill the church, the scent of new life, and new hope, accompanied by mu-sic which fills the sanctuary, and the words, "Christ is Risen, He is Risen Indeed," bringing us together in Spirit will be upon us. I look forward to those mo-ments, as I do each and every Sunday. "Blessed is the one whom You choose, and cause to approach You, that he may dwell in Your courts. Without A Doubt - Acts 4: 1-22 Evidence of the Resurrection

The account of Jesus dying on the cross and rising from the dead three days later, as promised, is not a cleverly devised fable. There is, in fact, more documented evidence attesting to this truth than to any ancient history. What happened later to His disciples is, for me, the most compelling testament to Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.After Jesus was nailed to a cross, His disciples, who believed that He was the Messiah, must have looked at each other and said, “Hey, we called this one wrong, let’s get out of here.” They knew the au-thorities would be after them next, and they ran in fear for their lives. Yet, history shows that, of all the disciples, only one died a natural death. The others were martyred by crucifixion, boil-ing in oil, being thrown from a cliff, beaten to death and flayed. No one returns to face certain death to participate in a hoax. No. There is only one plausible reason the disciples returned to almost certain execution. They had seen Jesus alive after seeing Him die on the cross. When Peter and John were told by the authorities not to speak or teach in the name of Jesus, they responded by say-ing, “We can’t keep quiet about what we have seen and heard.” We, too, have reason to believe.

A modern-day parable My friend had a large hydrangea bush in her yard. Each year for a decade, she found only one or two blooms. “Cut it down!” she told her husband in frustration. But he, a very patient man, urged “Let’s give it one more year. “I’ll water it and fertilize it with coffee grounds. If it still doesn’t bloom, I’ll chop it down.”

The next year, as the couple anticipated carrying out the death sentence, the bush not only bloomed but bloomed in abundance — and in multiple colors that amazed my friend, an avid gardener. “It’s the barren fig tree all over again!” she exclaimed.

“Face To Face (The Ultimate Tribute to Billy Joel & Elton John) Billy Joel and Elton John tribute artists Michael John and Joey Riedel have joined forces to create The Ultimate Tribute Show based on the Face to Face Show performed by Billy Joel and Elton John. The two capture both the original artists in their new, high energy, interactive Rock N Roll show. Just like the original tour, each artist performs a solo set and then culminate the show with a Face to Face set which features both of them playing together on two pianos trading off lyrics on each song they perform. Joey, visually and through his performance, captures Elton John in the 70’s to current day. He is known for his captivating entertainment prowess and his unbelievable recreation of Elton’s outrageous costumes. “Michael Finney” (Comedy & Magic) Won the prestigious award titled “Academy of Magical Arts Award” in 2004. This award is the equivalent to the Academy Awards for movie stars. These entertainers are nominated and voted upon by members and peers of the craft. Michael Finney was also a finalist on the famous TV show, “STAR SEARCH” with Ed McMahon in 1986 and has made numerous appearances on such shows as “Fox’s Comic Strip Live”, “HBO’s Comics on the Road”, “Sunday Comics with Lenny Clark”, “Bud Friedman’s An Evening At The Improv”, and two NBC specials hosted by John Ritter, titled “World’s Greatest Magic” & “World’s Wildest Magic”. In 1987 he received the “Silver Lions Head Award” from “Siegfried & Roy”. A “must see” show of clean and appropri-ate comedy & magic for all to enjoy. He’s similar to Nick Lewin from our March of 2011 NPA Series, with his own flare and delivery. There are many performers out there that do stand-up comedy & magic shows. . . .it’s not unique to the entertainment world, it’s Michael Finney’s presentation that makes him stand out above the rest. He has a true gift to meld with an audience immediately and pulls them into his “web of laughter”. A true side splitting show to enjoy!!!

Letha Neely Letha Neely, an Elder, serving as chair-person in the Worship & Music Committee, was born in Iowa into a family of 3 broth-ers and 1 sister, who, for the past 20 years have gathered every February to reminisce, share stories and sing. Music has

been a major part within her family, where one would hear piano, guitar, mandolin, ukulele and voices raising in song. Her brother, Loran, has been singing professionally here in the valley since 1981….singing many of the songs he has written. Letha was a member of the Cedar Rapids Sweet Adelines for 28 years, singing bass in this 4-part harmony barbershop chorus. She has many treasured memories dur-ing those years. One of her favorite was when this chorus competed in London, England in the Royal Albert Hall, as well as singing with 5,000 other Sweet Adelines in Hyde Park. Another was performing in Carnegie Hall. Letha’s employment has been in Sales Analysis within the Advertising Dept. of Better Homes & Garden, as well as secretary to the Home Furnishing Editor of Successful

Farming, both in the parent company of Meredish Publishing in Des Moines. After moving to Fountain Hills in 1998, she began working as Administrative Assistant in the Allen-West, Inc. Home Builder. Her favorite book is “Gone With the Wind”, which is also her favorite movie. And for a reason that she cannot explain, loves ‘slap-stick’ humor. Perhaps because she feels laughter is good for ones soul. Loves to cook…..favorite foods are: beef roast stew, pizza, lobster, shrimp, casseroles. . . Just to name a few. Misses cooking for her 2 sons, Matthew and Dutch (Meredith), who live in Iowa City, Iowa. She moved to Fountain Hills in January 1998; joined the choir, and became a member in November of that year. She joined the Community Chorus the same year. As a member of this Presbyterian Church, she has served on the PNC Commit-tee, plus 3 years as secretary on the Worship & Music Com-mittee. In many ways this church has become her home, away from home. She states there has been many rewarding experi-ences by being a member within this church family Best advice…..”never take yourself too seriously.”

Hospitalized? Call the church!

If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from ill-ness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a con-gregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we don’t see someone, that they are simply “vacationing away”. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
