MARCH NEWS MARCH 2018 I know it is hard to believe, but spring is just around the corner: March winds, April showers and May flowers will be here soon. March brings the beginning of spring, a season of growth and renewal. Green blades of grass push through the ground, and buds of leaves sprout on the trees, Regular growth is part of nature’s cycle, and ours, too. No matter how old we may get, we never stop growing! This March, consider ways you can grow your mind, health, heart and happiness. In addition to March Madness, Easter and St. Patrick’s Day, it is time to celebrate Wellderly Week! Wellderly is a blend of the words “well” and “elderly.” The third week of March is set aside to celebrate and recognize senior citizens who are young at heart. If you take a look around you, it is easy to see just what that means: Today’s seniors are something special. Medical advances and active lifestyles are helping seniors live longer than ever, and not just live, but thrive. Senior adults are becoming pros at new technology, going on frequent excursions, volunteering, exercising daily and updating their Facebook pages! These are people who show the rest of society that “80 is the new 70,” and so on. Remember as you celebrate Wellderly Week the words of poet Robert Browning: "Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” It is time to spring forward! Most of the nations will spring forward on Sunday, March 11, when daylight saving time begins. According to research, the average person loses about 40 minutes of sleep on the first night after the time change begins. To avoid being groggy Monday and to help your internal clock adjust, experts suggest going to bed a little earlier than usual starting several days before the change. Best wishes to Rudy G., Elizabeth C., Pat H., Phyllis M., Leo W., Alyce W., Easton W., Irene F., and Bob B. who are celebrating birthdays this month! WHAT ISEARLY-ONSETALZHEIMER’SDISEASE?

Alzheimer’s disease, which isnamed for the German physicianwho first identified it in 1906, isthe most common form ofdementia, accounting for 60 to80 percent of cases. It is aprogressive disorder of the brainand is characterized by agradual deterioration of mentalfaculties caused by a loss ofnerve cells and the connectionsbetween them.

The disease is oftenaccompanied by changes inbehavior and personality. Itscourse is relentless andrelatively predictable, but therate of mental decline variesfrom person to person. Peoplewho are age 65 and oldersurvive an average of four toeight years after the initial

Alzheimer’s diagnosis, but somepeople can live for 20 years ormore after diagnosis.

Although Alzheimer’s diseasemost commonly affects olderadults, it can also affect peoplein their 30s or 40s. WhenAlzheimer’s disease occurs insomeone under the age of 65, itis known as early-onsetAlzheimer’s disease. About 5%of people with Alzheimer’sdisease have the early-onsetform. Many of them are in their40s and 50s when Alzheimer’sdisease first manifests itself—when they have careers andfamilies, or are taking care ofsomeone with Alzheimer’s whenthey get their own diagnosis.

Types of early-onsetAlzheimer’s

Most types of early-onsetAlzheimer’s disease are thesame, but there are a few smalldistinctions:

UNLUCKY IDESEvery year on March 15, it’s

likely you’ll hear someone say,“Beware the ides of March!” Sowhat are ides, and why shouldwe be wary of them? In truth, there’s really nothing to fear: Onthe Ancient Roman calendar,“ides” was simply a word for thehalfway point of a month whenthe full moon usually arrived. However, Julius Caesar madethe ides of March famous whenhe was assassinated on that dayin 44 B.C. In WilliamShakespeare’s play about thefamous leader, a fortune tellershouts the “Beware the ides ofMarch!” warning, sealing thedate’s fate as an unlucky omen.

(continued from page 2)• Common Alzheimer’s

disease. The majority havethis—it will progress inroughly the same way as itdoes in older people withAlzheimer’s disease.

• Genetic Alzheimer’sdisease. This form is rare-1-5%. These people usuallybegin showing symptomsof the disease in their 30s,40s, or 50s.

Symptoms to watch for:Early symptoms:• Forgetting important things• Asking for the same

information again and again• Difficulty solving basic

problems• Losing track of the date or

time of year• Losing track of where you

are and how you got there• Difficulty with depth

perception or other visionproblems

• Difficulty joiningconversations or finding theright word for something

• Misplacing things and notbeing able to retrace yoursteps to find it

• Increasingly poor judgment• Withdrawal from work and

social situations• Changes in mood and

personalityLater symptoms:• Prominent mood swings

and changes in behavior• Deepening confusion about

time, place, and life events

• Loss of job or an activesocial life

• Suspicions about friends, family, or caregivers

• Difficulty speaking,swallowing, or walking

• Severe memory lossTreatment for the diseaseLike Alzheimer’s disease,

early-onset Alzheimer’s diseasecurrently has no cure. Butdoctors have had some successin helping people maintainmental function, controlbehavior, and slow theprogression of the disease.

There are drugs that are usedto help people maintain mentalfunction. The results have beenmixed, but these drugs seem tohelp people with theirsymptoms for anywhere from afew months to a few years.

Managing early-onsetAlzheimer’s

Early-onset Alzheimer’sdisease can be a difficult diseaseto cope with. If you have beendiagnosed, the best thing youcan do is have a positive outlookand stay as active and mentallyengaged as possible. Rely onyour friends and family as muchas possible. And don’t be afraidto seek out a support group ifyou feel that it might be helpful.
