Message The Club’s Board has vot-

ed to repair and repave the damaged areas of Yacht Club Drive from Meridian Road to the entrance gate and the roads around our property. Repairs of the existing asphalt require removal of roots, cracks etc. to prepare for approximately 1 1/2" of asphalt. More thickness of asphalt will be used along the edges (2") to achieve a flat surface. Fill dirt will be in-stalled along the edge where necessary, to help protect the edge when cars park. This project is scheduled to begin on weekdays in early

April and take ten days/two weeks to complete. Traffic will be controlled for normal usage. The contractor will work from our dock back to Meridian.

This is the time of year we prepare for summers activi-

Pickleball

The new Pickleball Courts have been Christened appropriately with champagne provided by Jerry. Jane Abrams held a clinic attended by 12 players. There are now about 25 Pickleball players at the Club. Tuesdays from 2:30 - 4:30 is a designated time for all to participate. Of course the courts are there for your use at any time. They are great courts. We do ask that the nets be left on each court and not be moved around. The courts are a wonderful addition to the Club and hopefully more and more people will enjoy the game. If you are interested in another clinic, let Judy Alling ([email protected]) know and another one will be scheduled. Full Sails & Tight Lines,

RACING by Frank Pontious

The next two months are going to be a wild and crazy time for our sailing program. Lots of opportunities for all of our sailors and race volunteers to be involved.

RACE VOLUNTEERS: you can now sign up online by clicking the Volunteer

box on the home page and follow the instructions. SAILORS: Many of the Notices of Race are available in the Racing section of

the BYSC website. March 3 is our spring High School Regatta. There will be about 100 kids and their

parents here for a full day of sailing. You are welcome to come out and watch a great group of kids enjoying competitive sailing. Chris Hoogenboom is heading this up.

March 11 our Frostbite Dinghy Series (finally after months of marginal weather) will

conclude. March 10 (Sat.) is our Race Volunteer and support boat program. If you have wanted

to be involved in helping conduct the races this is the class to attend. Wayne Bretsch and Geoff Grout will teach you all you know about getting started. The class will be fol-lowed by the PHRF (keelboat) Sat. series at 1pm.

March 17 and 18 is the Santa Elena Regatta with the keelboats sailing in Port Royal

Sound on Saturday and on the river on Sunday with a planned start in front of the water-front. Jim Thomas will be heading this up. The Dinner at BYSC on Saturday night is a great event and all are welcome - reservations required.

March 23 Flag Raising March 24-25 The Laser D-12 Regatta will take place along with racing for the Evo

class. Chris Duer is leading this.

And, that’s just March!

But, get ready for April. Our Spring Series for dinghies starts on Sunday April 8. Registration for Racing and Race Committee are now online. RACE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our racing program depends on Volunteers from the club to help with all aspects of the racing. If you are new to Volunteering, the list below will give you an idea of what each position involves. Please keep in mind that the race committee works together as a team, so these descriptions will give you an idea of the basic roles, but there is flexibility and fluidity in the tasks to make sure that everything can get done and that everyone has the help they need to fulfill their role.

WHY SHOULD YOU SIGN UP TO

BE A RACE VOLUNTEER?

It counts as volunteer hours You get to spend the day on the water It’s a great way to learn about

the rules of racing and sailing in general

It’s the best seat in the house to watch the racing

DO YOU NEED EXPERIENCE TO

BE A RACE VOLUNTEER?

NO!! New volunteers can sign up

to be an observer and have no specific responsibility while on the RC boat

Another great role for new volunteers is the mark/safety boat crew as the skipper will be there to help guide you in your role

Local Tradition Continues with the Santa Elena Regatta

Beaufort, SC – The Santa Elena Foundation and the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club will sponsor the Santa Elena Regatta for PHRF sailboats on March 17 and 18, 2018. This event is the major big boat sailing event in Beaufort each year and commemorates 452 years since the founding of Santa Elena on Parris Island in the spring of 1566.

This Regatta is a combination of the Jean Ribault Cup which will be sailed on March 17, and the Pedro Menendez Cup on March 18. The Ribault and Menendez Cups are sailed as separate events and the results from them will be combined to determine the winner of the Santa Elena Regatta and the recipient of the Founder’s Cup.

The Founder’s Cup trophy is unique and quite an honor for the winner. Their name will be etched on the base of a bronze statue of Pedro Menendez, Santa Elena founder, which was donated by Count Alvaro Armada of Spain, the 20th generation descendent of Menendez.

Geography not only plays a major role in the historical references but also in the race logistics. The plan is for the Ribault Cup to be sailed in Port Royal Sound and the Menendez Cup in the Beaufort River starting at the Waterfront Park.

“What a great partnership. The Regatta is a wonderful tradition for the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club and, now, the Santa Elena Foundation,” says Megan Meyer, Santa Elena History Center Director. “Its significance is further realized as we think back 450 years ago… when earliest European settlers too sailed into Port Royal Sound to establish their settlements in the New World.”

The Regatta is open to boats with a PHRF rating that are at least 22” LOA. Boats that are 18’ LOA and over will be considered on a case by case basis. Trophies will be awarded for both the Ribault and Menendez Cups as well as to the overall winner of the Santa Elena Regatta.

There will be several social events associated with the Regatta including a kickoff Skippers Meeting and cocktail party on Friday night before the racing starts, an Awards Dinner on Saturday night and an Awards Presentation on Sunday after the racing is over. All social events will take place at the Beaufort Yacht and Sail-ing Club.

For more information about the historic, local significance of Pedro Melendez and Jean Ribault, and to learn more about the Santa Elena Foundation visit www.Santa-Elena.org.

Full details of the Regatta are in the Notice of Race which can be found on the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing

Club web site at http:www.byscnet.com/about/racing/santaelena or by contacting Regatta Chairman, Jim Thom-

as through the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club.

The Santa Elena Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The mission of the foundation is to discover, preserve, and share the untold story of America’s first and lost century through the rise and fall of Santa Elena.

Junior Sailing of Beaufort Update Spring is here and so is sailing! Our High School team is in the thick of the points regatta sea-

son and hunting for their qualification for the district championship. Come on out to the club this weekend, March 3, for one of the last high school regattas of the season.

Our Opti’s will be heading to Florida for the Sunshine State Championship and the Lasers are all practicing for the District 12 Championship, hosted by BYSC on March 24-25.

In other very exciting news, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beau-fort) has taken over the nationally recognized Spirit of America program location in Beaufort. With over 20 locations across the country, this program came to Beaufort about 4 years ago and had been hosted by the YMCA and on-the-water activities took place at the Port Royal Sound Foundation. We plan to host this seasons sessions at the Port Royal Sound Foundation location and are looking for volunteers to help teach sailing, paddling and powerboat operation during one or more of the 4 planned sessions.

Adult Sailing Seminars at BYSC

Here comes March and with this month comes Spring, nicer weather, and wind. We also are

planning and looking forward to several races. Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating (JSB) would love to see more adults sailing this year. So much, we are articulating an Adult Sailing Program and looking for interested BYSC members and non-members alike. Right now the main focus is four day classes for introductory students.

BCSB has a 27-foot S2 keelboat and it is the ideal platform to learn how to sail. In the past seminars, participants learned aboard the S2 with four students and one instructor.

The instructor is fellow BYSC Member Scott Gordon. Scott is a US Sailing Level I Small Boat Instructor. He is also public-school educator with 20 years’ experience. His sailing experience in-cludes racing and coastal cruising and 20 years’ experience teaching sailing.

The cost for this seminar is $275 for Members and $325 for Non-Members. It includes 16 hours of instruction over four days. Twelve of those hours are on the water with four hours in the classroom and on the dock.

In the past few weeks, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has updated their webpage with a good deal of new information. One of the pages is devoted to the Adult Sailing Program. Check it out at this address: https://www.beaufortsailing.com/adult-sailing/. Take it a step further and sign up for a class! Currently, we need one more person for our May class. Hopefully that person will be you.
