Salutations,

The term is flying by quite quickly now with so many things that have happened and so many more things yet to

come.

Last week we had the Annual General Meeting of School Council in which the goals, targets and key improvement

strategies for the year ahead were presented and discussed in depth. Following this, the new council was announced

and office bearers elected as part of a very full agenda. I would like to formally congratulate Carl Michael on being

elected the School Council President and Jeff Fang for being elected the School Council Vice President. At this

meeting, we sincerely thanked our outgoing members, Joel Deane and Kylie Crompton for their valued contribution

over the years. Joel I think may have set a new standard being a Council member for over 12 years!! Well done Joel

and thank you!

Following each School Council meeting a member of council will write about what was discussed and decided upon

so that you, the broader community, can be well informed. Nadia will be writing this edition and will share with you

the new and existing members.

News from your School Council...

As we settle into 2020, our school council conducted its AGM last week where, along with the usual formalities, we

elected and welcomed our new school council representatives and key position holders. This year Dimitra Ferizis and

Andrea Sergi joined the team as new parent representatives for 2020 while Katherine Zingiris and Nadiah Smith were

re-engaged for a second term as general councillors alongside Kelvin Wong. We were encouraged to find that the

council unanimously agreed to elect Carl Michael as President for a second year and Jeff Fang will continue as Vice

President. We also continue the year with Lisa Reuss as our ever-dependable Secretary and Jim Hill as our Treasurer.

Also on school council, we are very pleased to have Larissa Vesdrevanis leading the policy sub-committee, Carly

Epskamp leading the curriculum sub-committee and Sandra Bishop leading our newest sub-committee focussing on

wellbeing. Krystal Day will be joining us as the Parents and Friends Group representative.

We are looking forward to another productive year at Doncaster Primary as the school council is proud to see

planning for Grade 6 camp to Canberra is well underway and we have approved the planning of Grade 4 camp which

will occur later in the year. In line with the School Strategic Plan, to support our school’s goals, the 2020 Annual

Implementation Plan has been developed with involvement of all staff and has been approved. A great deal of effort

has been put into ensuring a strong curriculum is provided which supports all the students in achieving desired

learning outcomes. Further, the school striving to exceed the requirements of the Victorian government Child Safe

Standard. We are focussing on student safety and wellbeing and a holistic approach to achieving a positive school

experience and healthy learning environment for our community.

As always, please feel free to approach any members of the Doncaster Primary School Council with questions,

concerns or feedback. We look forward to representing the school community this year and hope to provide the

support required to help our school thrive. Nadia Smith, School Council Member.

The assembly this week was delightful as we presented the Captain’s badges. To see the excitement of the children

as they received their badge was priceless. We look forward to watching them grow and learn the responsibilities

and skills of leadership.

Please keep an eye on Compass for any Corona virus updates. When the Department of Education provide advice

and information, we pass this on directly via newsfeeds on Compass.

This edition of the newsletter is focussed on Child Safety. This school has a commitment to zero tolerance of child

abuse. We support and respect all children as well as our staff and volunteers. We are committed to the cultural

safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, the cultural safety of children from culturally and/or

linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a safe environment for children with a disability. We want

children at this school to be safe, happy and empowered. We have legal and moral obligations to contact authorities

when we are worried about a child’s safety, which we follow rigorously.

At Doncaster Primary School we have a suite of child safe documents and resources that aim:

To ensure all children feel safe and supported at school.

To prevent child abuse by identifying risks early, and removing and reducing these risks.

To ensure that processes and procedures are in place to protect children from child abuse.

To ensure that all staff (including contractors), volunteers, visitors to the school and parents/carers, understand how to behave appropriately with and towards children.

To comply with Ministerial Order No. 870 and the Child Safety Standards

To comply with reporting obligations under child protection law and criminal law.

To ensure child safety is a priority at Doncaster Primary School. The child safety Code of Conduct and working with children check requirements aim to protect children and reduce opportunities for child abuse or harm to occur.

To compliment child protection legislation, Department policy, school policies and procedures and professional standards, codes or ethics as these apply to staff and other personnel.

To ensure all Doncaster Primary School staff and volunteers provide a valid WWC Check in accordance with legislation and Victorian Department of Education policy.

Doncaster Primary School is committed to safety and wellbeing of all children and young people. This will be the primary focus of our care and decision-making.

Please visit Compass, Documents, or the school website to read and view the child safe policies, documents and

resources.

In the coming few weeks we really look forward to many community events such as Grandparents Day, Harmony

Day, Cultural Diversity Week, Human Development Workshops, Level 4 gymnastics, Prep – 2 AFL clinics, excursions

and incursions just to name a few.

A very big community event that we will run will be our “Future Families Information Night and Twilight Tour” to be

run on Monday 23rd March. The Twilight tours will commence at 6:00 pm and the information night will begin at

6:30pm. The purpose of this evening is to share with prospective families the high expectations we have on all of our

learners, the leadership skill development, the whole school wellbeing program and to highlight the exceptional

grounds and facilities. Doncaster Primary School is 157 years young with a rich history; we want everyone to discover

the Doncaster difference and enrol to become a member of our outstanding school.

“Always remember to do things for people not because of who they are or what they do in return but because of

who you are.”(Harold S. Kushner)

English Immersion Program 2020 The English Immersion Program [EIP] is an initiative developed by Doncaster Primary School

that is designed to provide an opportunity for students who have recently arrived in Australia

to immerse themselves in the English language. The emphasis is on teaching students

essential English skills including phonic awareness, accuracy, fluency and the confidence to

speak the English language. The ultimate goal of the EIP is to increase their participation in

their mainstream class. The program is designed to support those students who would have

most difficulty engaging in class work and forming relationships with their peers due to their

English language proficiency.

Students in the program are offered a targeted curriculum specifically designed to improve

their reading, writing and conversational English skills. Across Term One the curriculum has

initially focused on students developing a capacity to describe themselves, their families, and

their school life. They are engaging in English conversation practice to support their

engagement with peers and independence in the classroom. To develop their word attack

and reading comprehension skills students are studying an adaptation of Anna Sewell’s ‘Black

Beauty’ and exploring the idea of characters and descriptive language.
