About our Hike Rating SystemOur rating system provides a useful, general gauge of a hike’s difficulty. It factors in distance and elevation gain and is intended to help you choose hikes that you will find most enjoyable.

R0-R10 These are more walks than hikes. They’re usually close to home, the trails are flat, and distances are generally short. An after-din-ner walk around the block would be rated R1 or R2. Our Wednesday Night Walks are R5.

R10-R20 Most of these hikes will be in the lower mountains and foothills. Distances will be about 5-8 miles, with vertical ranging from 500-1000 feet... not easy if you’re new to hiking! Trails will be dirt and rock. As long as you’re in moderately good shape, you should be able to enjoy the outing.

R20-R30 Hikes in the low end of this range will be too hard and overly stressful for many new members. Plan on an all-day trip, with at least 4 hours of continuous hiking in rugged and steep terrain. At a minimum, be sure to pack two quarts of water, lunch, a snack, and rain gear.

R30-R40 These are strenuous hikes. They will usually be 10+ miles, with climbs of 2000+ feet. They’re appropriate only for those who have done a number of lower rated hikes.

R40+ These hikes are usually 12 or more miles with 3000 feet or more of elevation gain. They’re appropriate only for fit, experienced hikers. Check with hike leader about the trip if you are wanting to do this trip for the first time.

See “Outings Protocol” on page 14.

Hiking Mt. Mitchell and Pinnacles of Danby Gale Magann

Pinnacles of Dan hike April 6, 2002 led by Garner Rivers. This was a 6-mile hike with thrills — a mile-long suspended narrow boardwalk along a wooden aqueduct. One steep climb to it. That is Garner on the top!

March 28 Tanawha Trail Shuttle HikeSaturday Blue Ridge Parkway

It’s simply one of the best hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. The Tanawha Trail ascends through rocky terrain at Rough Ridge, soaring to simply breathtaking views. It’s an exceptionally rewarding hike with photo-worthy views, far-flung horizons, dramatically rocky and jagged terrain, and lush flora that are abundant throughout the hike, making this

one of our all-time favorites. It’s 8+/- miles: the first 4 miles, fairly strenuous; the last 4 miles, fairly easy. We will start at the Linn Cove Viaduct and hike to the Boone Fork Parking Lot. It will take at least 3 hours for the 1st 4 miles due to the rockiness of the terrain. [R-32]

April 4 5 Peaks ChallengeSaturday Hanging Rock State Park

Do you use the trails at Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain state parks? Now’s your chance to support both. The Friends of Sauratown Mountains is sponsoring the second Annual High 5 at Hanging Rock. Participants will have their choice of either the original 10-mile route of park trails to reach five of the highest elevations in the park, summiting Moore’s Knob, Cooks Wall and Hanging Rock mountains and passing by two prominent rock outcrops, Wolf Rock and House Rock. Or another option is doing a 5-mile route, summiting Moore’s Knob only. I won’t be able to lead the hike, but I hope to see you at check-in. The registration fee of $35 includes a $5 voucher to one of the food trucks at the finish line, a commemorative patch, plus a T-shirt if registered prior to March 26. All proceeds go to support our two beloved parks. Check out

April 11 Boone Fork Trail, Price ParkSaturday Blue Ridge Parkway

Let’s welcome spring with a Saturday hike on the Boone Fork Trail at Price Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This beautiful 5 mile loop trail is a club favorite in the spring,

summer, and fall. Although approximately 5 miles in length, plan on this being at least a 3 hour hike. We will encounter numerous stream crossings, rocks, roots, rhododendron tunnels, as well as the opportunity to climb a couple of ladders. This is considered an easy-to-moderate trail for experienced hikers. Plan on bringing poles and wearing appropriate footwear. After the hike, there will be an option to stop for ice cream in Blowing Rock. Call or email for details about the meet-up time and carpooling. [R-11]

April 11 Indian Creek at Saturday Hanging Rock

Let’s head to nearby Hanging Rock for a moderate hike on an early spring day. As usual, I am counting on the gods to reward good behavior with plenty of sunshine and cool breezes. And if, offended at some slight offense we mere mortals don’t understand, they decide to turn against us we’ll make the best of it anyway and be the masters of our own enjoyment. We will start from the Dan River canoe launch parking lot and will hike up the Indian Creek Trail to the Visitor Center and back. Sections of this trail are lined with mountain laurel and rhododendrons loaded at that time of year with buds ready to burst into bloom. April 18 Mountain-To-Sea TrailSaturday Jumping Off Rock to Jeffress Park

This is a favorite for those who like longish hike for endurance and stretches of moderate up and down bumps. It meanders through Ashe and Wilkes counties for 13 miles over gently rolling terrain along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trailhead is less than two hours from the Triad and easily accessed from both NC 16 and 421, and the terrain is user friendly. The terrain alternates between open meadows, sheltered rhododendron groves, and soft-to-the-feet stretches of evergreen copses. We will start the hike at Jumping Off Rock and walk south toward Jeffress Park, cumulatively gaining 2,700 feet of elevation. I find the last stretch along a lovely stream, as we approach Jeffress Park, particularly appealing. Please email, text, or call Nicole for meeting times and places. 13 miles +/-2700 feet. [R-40]

April 18 Moses Cone Manor Carriage TrailsSaturday @ 9 am Mile Post 284

The second circles Bass Lake along the carriage trails and back to the Cone Manor. Each section is approximately five miles. If you don’t want to do all ten miles, you can visit the Manor House and Craft Center. For those who want to do the entire hike, there will still be an opportunity for a brief tour of the Manor House and visit to the Craft Center after the hike. New Hikers are welcome to do part or

all of this hike! There will also be an optional ice cream stop at Kilwin’s (in Blowing Rock) on the way home. Send me an email by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 17th if you plan to come. Specify distance. 5 miles, approx. 500 feet [R-10] or 10 miles, 1,000 feet. [R-20].

April 18 Wolf Pit to Table RockSaturday Linville Gorge

This challenging hike begins at the bottom of Shortoff Mountain in Linville Gorge, ascends and then goes along the rim of the Gorge with great views and another serious descent and ascent before coming to the Chimneys. More good views are then followed by a climb up Table Rock for lunch, and then the trip back in the other direction. It’s a long and hard hike, but it’s also an out-and-back so hikers can choose to go part of the way rather than the entire distance. Call or email for meeting times and places. 16.5 miles; +/-4400’ [R-50 ++]
