who once lived in Laytonsville. She is an active member ofthe Laytonsville Historical Society, creating websites and adatabase, and documenting past residents of the town.

Laytonsville is asmall municipalityin MontgomeryCounty about 25miles north ofWashington, DC.It covers about twosquare miles and has approximately500 residents andabout 15 businesses.

An intersection inthe northern districtof the town providesa historic route toDamascus andFrederick County

to the north, and Baltimore to the east.

The original road leading from the Monocacy River toEllicotts Mills and Baltimore is now known as Brink Roadto the west of town and Sundown Road to the east. It was a major artery for cattle and pigs headed for thebustling markets of Baltimore and established the town as a comfortable stopover for drovers. Route 108 wasadded in the very early 1800s.

Cracklintown, established in 1789, was the oldest documented settlement in the immediate Laytonsville area. Named for the Cracklin Tavern, Cracklintown waslocated near the intersection of present day Route 108 andBrink-Sundown Roads. The name originated from thepopular cracklin bread, essentially a bacon-cornbread,served at the tavern. The entire First Election District was known as Cracklin District.

When John Layton, who inherited and lived in the Federal style brick home at the intersection, became postmaster, he added his own name to the post office. After existing under both names for some decades,Laytonsviile was incorporated in 1892.

About the Speakers: Jane Griffith Evans lives on Fairview Farm in theMontgomery County Agricultural Reserve. HISTORY OF THE “DAY OF THE BOOK”

April 23rd (the book festival is on the nearest Sunday) is a symbolic day inworld literature. Declared as International Day of the Book by UNESCOin 1995, this celebration of books and literature draws its inspiration froma Catalan tradition, the Festival of the Rose.

Legend has it that Saint George, Patron Saint of Catalonia, slew a dragonabout to devour a Catalan princess. From the dragon’s blood sprouted arosebush, from which the hero plucked the prettiest rose for the princess. The Festival of the Rose in Barcelona celebrates chivalry and love.

In 1923, this lover’s festival merged with “el dia del libre”, or The Day ofthe Book, to mark the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel de Cervantesand William Shakespeare, two giants of literary history, on April 23, 1616.

On this day in Barcelona, bookstalls and street festivities run the length ofLa Rambla, the old city’s main boulevard. The Pauli Bellet FoundationCatalan Library, the Town of Kensington, and all of the sponsors, authors, and artists celebrate this day on Howard Ave, Kensington’s “La Rambla”.

15th Annual Kensington Day of the Book FestivalThe Book as Literature • The Book as Art • The Book as Music
