Come April I will have beenlooking after the club for 5 years. It’s been aninteresting time.I was advised by a friend on getting the job that I might need to becareful, ‘It’s a national institution’, they said. Not wrong there.

We have made a few changes over the years, most noticeably we havekept the old place open till three every morning, as jazz clubs aresupposed to do, with the Late Late Show, We have also made the Barupstairs into a very successful and eclectic live venue - albeit in adecidedly casual way. We have introduced Sunday lunchtime shows forthose for whom Soho nights are just too much and we have invented themadness that is our Christmas cabaret lunches. Along the way we havebecome the biggest employer of British jazz musicians in the country andthe most prolific venue in the UK in terms of shows staged. And ourmembership now stands at over 2,100 exceptionally stylish individuals!

Most importantly we have attracted an amazing array of internationaljazz artists. From legends McCoy Tyner and Jon Hendricks to themodern, soon to be legends, like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Kurt Elling(April 15 to 20). Al Jarreau has returned as has Van Morrison, and wehave been able to bring Wynton Marsalis and the Mingus Big Band overas well as Chick Corea (March 5 and 6). Long time favourites GeorgieFame (April 8 to 13) Chucho Valdez (April 25 to 27) and Marlena Shaw(March 26 to 30) continue to support the club. All credit to the vastknowledge of the Ronnie’s booking team who have all played a key rolein making the club what it is today.

So a massive thanks to all who work here now and a few of those whocame and went. Particular thanks to my chief lieutenants Nick Lewisand Fred Nash whose exceptional ability and dedication to the causestop me getting the sack.

And of course Mike and Sally who bought, preserved and improved theclub in the first place.

HYPNOTIC BRASS ENSEMBLE

Hypnotic Brass Ensemble are eight brothers from the south side of Chicago. They come from an extraordinary musical family. Other sisters and brothersare professional musicians, their mothers are singers, and Philip Cohran, theirfather, has roots running back to Mississippi, his time in the musical hothouseof 1940s St Louis, and his seminal role with Sun Ra in Chicago in the 1950s.

When Ra left for the east coast in 1960, Phil stayed in Chicago. By the timethe members of the HBE were growing up, Phil’s work as a musical activistand educator had led to the establishment of a space called the Sun Ark ina warehouse behind the family home above a furniture shop. At night whenthey went to bed the children would hear their father rehearsing with hisband the Circle Of Sound. They were wakened at 6 a.m. for several hours’music practice before going to school. From an early age they were a centralpart of their father’s Youth Ensemble. Coinciding with this involvement in theirfather’s ethos was a parallel passion. “At night we used to sneak under thecovers and listen to hip hop.

By the end of the nineties, with everyone out of school, they brought togethertheir musicianship, their jazz roots and their hip hop sensibility, and made aliving busking on the streets of Chicago. Eventually the group transferred toNew York City, and after playing out relentlessly, including stints with DamonAlbarn and Gorillaz, gigs with Mos Def and Erykah Badu, they have come tobe known as one of the hottest and most individual bands around.

MARK MURPHYMark Murphy (voc), tbc (pno), Andy Hamill (bs), Mark Fletcher (drs).

Six time Grammy Nominated jazz singer and lyricist Murphy first came toprominence in the sixties and is noted for his definitive and unique vocaleseand vocal improveisations with both melody and lyrics. A wonderfulperformer who brings a real sense of drama and life to his material, Murphyis a true inspiration to a generation of jazz singers.

The term ‘legend’ can be bandied about rathertoo often in jazz circles, but there is no dangerof over-estimating the status of OscarPeterson. Regarded by the jazz community asone of the most important, influential andrevered pianists of all time, his death in 2007was a huge blow to music as a whole, not justto the genre. Peterson played Ronnie Scott’smany times in his day, and for this tributenight the club will keep the music andmemory of him alive. Led tonight by clubmusical director James Pearson, theseshows there will feature two grand pianos setin the traditional way, facing each other.
