Andy Wardalthough being a doctorsson might have made me aricher man, I am proud ofmy family and the trade. Istarted Republic Plumbingin 1988 as I felt like I wantedto be my own boss andhave survived my own stu-pidity and a pretty good re-cession so far. I was electedpresident of the PHCC ofMiddle Tennessee manyyears ago and served thereand for a short time as oneof the Middle Tennessee rep-resentatives to the StatePHCC Board of Directors.

It became obvious to methat there needed to be analternative to the PHCC thatsmall plumbing contractorscould afford. Up until thatpoint the fee was as much asa set of tires and that manycould not afford. So in an ef-fort to get these contractorsinvolved I and Jack Steakley,Lance Hornbuckle, and DonSeymore started The Nash-ville Area Plumbing and Me-chanical Association.

I have served as its presi-dent all these many years. Weare not adversaries of thePHCC and work with them onmany occasions, but we dooffer a low initial investmentand the money we chargestays in Tennessee so we trulyare local. NAPMA has mem-bers all over the State of Ten-nessee who join becausethey want to support ourgoals of evening the playingfield so licensed plumbingand mechanical contractorsare not at a disadvantagecompeting with unlicensedillegal contractors.

We support better codeenforcement and professionalinspectors. We support pro-fessional suppliers who carryall of the things that home im-provement stores cannotcarry. We support smart leg-islative changes that will re-vamp our all too easy StateMaster License test. We sup-port the designation of Jour-neyman Plumber and supportits return. I am proud of theconfidence my peers haveshow electing me to this officeas often I remind them its un-deserved, and hope when I amlong gone the professionalplumbing and mechanicaltrades are better off for myservice.

It’s true, it’s finally here,“People can go online andapply for building permitsand check code enforce-ment provisions, and evenpay fees online,” says theMayor. “This will make thepermit and code processmore convenient to the pub-

The new program whichwas the overwhelminglyvoted in, will be up and run-ning in about three months

“Developing An Effective Perceptionfor You as a Leader”

By PMA Board Member Mitzi Moore, President Sundial Plumbing

“It takes 20 years tobuild a reputation and 5 min-utes to ruin it. If you thinkabou t tha t , you ’ l l dothings differently.” – War-ren Buffett

A perception is howwe “see” something orsomeone in our ownmind. Common belief orassumption can play arole in existing percep-tions and are based onmany factors such as so-cial, environmental sur-roundings and previousexper iences. True orfalse, a strong perceptionis no less than real truthto our brain. How do oth-ers “see” you?

Once established inour mind’s eye, a percep-tion becomes part of ourthinking and is hard tochange . Percept ionscan be shaped or influ-enced by lea rn ing ,memory, and expecta-tion. “Bottom up” pro-cessing is low-level infor-mation used to build animage in the mind of theperceiver. The most ef-fective way to change aperception is to prove“the perception” wrongconsistently. Show ev-

eryone that what they be-lieve is very different fromreality.

There are a few help-fu l and common ap -proaches for changing aperception;

1) Be in ten t iona l ,make a plan, and decidewhat percept ions youwant or need others tohave.

2) Create or “orches-trate” awareness - let ev-eryone around you knowthat what they perceive isnot accurate. Share se-lect facts; share informa-tion to build a case andto prove your side. No-body denies facts – un-less you are dealing withsomeone whose mind isalready made up no mat-ter what, in that case, itis not a perception but adeep rooted b ias andprejudice. Still, all per-cep t ions can bechanged.

3) Bu i ld a re la t ionand trust: for others to lis-ten to you and your side, you need to have a rela-tionship and closenesswith the other party. Ifthey trust you, they willbelieve the new facts. If

not, no matter how reli-able your source is, theywon’t get your perspec-tive of the story.

4) Educate o thers :use facts, research, andliterature to educate tochange perceptions. Thisis the similar to #1 of cre-ating awareness but goesa step further by makinga consc ious e f fort toshare the knowledge. Thiscan be accomplished oneon one or for a group.

5) Never outshine themaster. Make sure yourecognize and validate per-ceptions and accomplish-ments of others.

6) Let your actionsspeak: Live the life or thestyle you want to portray.Let your actions speak forthemselves against per-cept ions ormisperceptions. Consis-tently prove to others, dayaf ter day, that the “socalled notion” is wrong. You win through actions notargument.

7) Make a true first andconsequential impression –the way you want others toperceive you. Act consis-tently with the perceptionyou intend to have. Appear-

ance Matters.8) When needed, go

for shock and awe; rock theboat! Yes, to changesomeone’s mind, some-times you need to send astrong message provingthem wrong. For example,if others perceive you asweak, do something dra-matic to show your strengthor power. This approach isbest for deep rooted percep-tions and prejudice.

9) Connect and be onthe same page – if there isn’tenough info about some-thing or someone, thevacuum is filled with mythsand second hand stories.

Many perceptions result dueto isolation from the facts.

10) Master timing-Never be in a hurry – howdo you carry yourself? – willdetermine how you aretreated.

Effective Leaders re-spect themselves and in-spire the same sentiment inothers. Learn to study oth-ers and watch your timing.

11) Doing small thingsconsistently over time –makes a big impact orchange.

12) Always say lessthan necessary, be selec-tive with what you choose toemphasize.

PHCC Vice President Tells Lawmakers thatHealth Care Reform Is Creating Too Much

Uncertainty for Small BusinessesOn April 17, 2013, Plumb-

ing-Heating-Cooling Con-tractors—National Associa-tion (PHCC) Vice PresidentKevin Tindall, owner ofTindall & Ranson Plumbingand Heating of Princeton,N.J., was one of three smallbusiness owners who testi-fied on Capitol Hill abouthow the implementation ofthe nation’s Affordable CareAct (ACA) is affecting smallbusinesses.

The purpose of the hear-ing was for Members of theHouse Small Business Com-mittee (as well as all Mem-bers of Congress) to hearfrom small business ownersdirectly, in an effort to under-stand what small businessowners are beginning to ex-perience with the new law.Because health care reformis extremely complicated,Congress is becoming in-creasingly concerned thatconfusion amongst smallbusiness owners will cause

a situation that harms an al-ready weakened economy.

In both his written andoral testimony, Tindall re-ferred to himself a “smallbusiness job creator,” butpointed out that “the contin-ued rise in the cost of pro-viding health care insuranceabsolutely stifles my ability tocreate, provide and sustainjobs.”

He continued: “I have yetto understand how we as anation can continue to statethat we need to create morejobs, yet challenge, threaten, or even ignore thevery mechanisms for jobcreation.”

According to Tindall, many small businesses, in-cluding his own, do notqualify for the tax credit in-centives provided by theACA because the salariesthey pay their employeesoften exceed the $50,000per year threshold. He also saidthat small businesses simply

cannot continue to absorb thesteep insurance premium coststhat continue to rise every year.At his own company, Tindallpaid 9.7 percent more to renewhealth care insurance in 2011,followed by an increase of 9.3percent in 2012.

In response to a questionfrom Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY),Tindall was able to further de-scribe the many uncertaintiesthe Affordable Care Act is cre-ating for small businesses.“We’re not being able to pre-dict the cost of going forward,”Tindall said. “The implementa-tion of the law was supposed tocreate a cost-controllingmechanism, but as a company,I haven’t seen that yet. … Thebiggest problem I have is that itis unpredictable.” PHCC—Na-tional Association plans to useTindall’s health care reform tes-timony as a platform for its lob-bying efforts at the upcoming2013 PHCC Legislative Confer-ence (May 22-23, 2013) onhealth care reform.
