Another advance on the communication front is that the YahooGroups site started last year continues to grow. Wenow have 75 members registered on the site. I encourage all members to become part of our Yahoo Group. The siteis called Das Kummet just like this newsletter. The site provides an easy way for the Chapter to distribute the latestinformation about upcoming events, post pictures and summaries from recently completed events and post techtips. Members looking for help or having a question can post messages on the site for distribution by e-mail. Thereis a strict no spam rule so you shouldn’t see a lot of junk in your inbox from this site. Our newsletter only comes out6 to 8 times per year and you can get a lot more timely information by being part of this group. To join the site, go towww.groups.yahoo.com and follow the instructions on the back page of this newsletter.

The last two goals for this year are being worked on as you read this newsletter. While we have a strong drivingschool program and a good relationship with National there is more to do in both these areas. There will be more toreport in coming issues of this newsletter.

2002 – The year and the carThis is a special year for current and former owners of the first BMW to make a major impact in the United States –the 2002. Built between 1968 and 1976, the 2002 made a lasting mark on the American automobile scene and hasinfluenced the development of BMWs ever since. Special events are being held this year to commemorate the 2002in 2002. This edition of our newsletter contains a report on one event held, appropriately enough, on 02/02/02. Comeout to one of our events and you are likely to see at least one of these special cars.

Thank you!!I couldn’t end this article without saying thank you to last year’s officers and volunteers and all those who have gonebefore them. We truly have a remarkable Chapter built over more than 30 years through the devoted attention of ourfellow Club members. Please join me in trying to continue the tradition.

Until we meet again,Bob

SMG II IS HERE!by Bob Eveleigh

BMW began production of US bound cars equippedwith its latest transmission technology in November2001. Cars equipped with SMG II (Sequential MGearbox II) began arriving at local dealers in mid-Dec. Originally introduced in 1996 to European BMWcustomers, SMG I found its way into a majority ofEuropean M3. Now, US buyers have the opportunity tojoin in the fun. The enhanced SMG II is a 6 speed manualtransmission that uses electronics and hydraulics tochange gears instead of the traditional left foot operatedclutch. The transmission can be operated in full manual modeor automatic mode. In automatic mode the driver selects1st gear, applies some throttle and the car pulls away asthe transmission smoothly engages the clutch. Up shiftsto 2nd through 6th gear follow automatically. In manualmode the process is similar but the driver chooses when2nd through 6th gear is engaged. Amazingly, as the driver slows the car for a stoplight thetransmission detects the need to downshift and will bringthe car to a rest in 1st gear. The sensation of the cardownshifting by itself is a little strange at first but quiteimpressive. I found a use for both manual and automatic mode.During heavy Holiday shopping traffic it was great toswitch over to automatic mode and let the transmissiondo all the shifting. Once I got on some open road, selecting manual mode allowed me to wind out the gearsa little more to my preference. If you would like to learn more about SMG II an articleappears in the November 2001 issue of the Roundel. Inaddition, a tutorial on the system’s function and featurescan be found on the Web at: http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/pulse/technology/

THE ROAD TO O’FEST 2002KEYSTONE, COLORADO

The 2002 edition of BMW CCA O’Fest is fast approach-ing. This year’s event will be held in beautiful Keystone,Colorado. O’Fest features every type of event a BMWenthusiast could ask for – driving school, safety school, autocross, road rally, gymkhana, trade show, tech ses-sions, special appearances by BMW celebrities, socialsand Colorado’s famous attractions. But what is a Tide-water member to do, it’s nearly 1800 miles to O’Fest thisyear? Much farther than last year’s event in New Hamp-shire and the year before in South Carolina. The answeris enclosed and insured 18 wheeled transpor t.

We are gauging the interest of our members in hiring acar transport company to ship cars to O’Fest. The rulesare simple: 1) by March 15, 2002 send me an e-mailindicating you want to participate, 2) if there is enoughinterest I will get a quote for a round trip haul to Denverwhich is about 3,600 miles (expected cost of about$1,800 per vehicle), 3) each participant will need to payfor their trip by a specific date to obtain a space, 4) therewill be no refunds unless the transport company is feel-ing charitable, 5) the vehicles will all need to be pickedup and dropped off at one location in Hampton Roadsand one location in Denver, 6) each member will berequired to contract directly with the transport company, and 7) no liability will be assumed by the Chapter. Eachtransporter can haul 6 vehicles. If we have fewer than 6vehicles on a transporter the cost may increase. If youhave a strong interest in doing this, please e-mail me [email protected].

The May 19 school will give priority to Ladies & Teensbut will be open to all if space is available. We recom-mend that you make a copy of the application and use itfor the May 19 school. Contact Bob Brochu [email protected], 430-8124 or Cur t Kiser [email protected], 547-2804 for information.

MARCH 9 LANGLEY DRIVING SCHOOL INFO AND APPLICATIONThe timing of this newsletter is such that it only gives a short time for sign-ups for the March 9 school. We apolo-gize for this information timing problem and it is a lesson learned. Time sensitive info is imperative and we strive toprovide it to you at the right times. The introduction of the chapter website offers the benefit of current informationavailable to you ALL THE TIME. We recommend you plan your schedule for our events and get your apps in early.

At the time of printing the March 9 school already has ten applicants. They are folks that received the info at thechapter banquet and/or from the chapter DasKummet YahooGroup. Since we’ve always used a post mark first-come-first-served basis it is likely that the school will fill quickly. Please don’t be discouraged because we run a waiting listfor space available (and it happens). Also, if you don’t get in this time your get first come priority for the next school. So don’t delay in filling out the application found on page 7 and send it in ASAP! First come first served (no phone callor email reservation request please).

Last year’s spring rallywas enjoyed by all, and this one is in the same generalarea, but is a completely different route. COME ANDENJOY A SPRING DAY WITH US!

REPAIRING YOUR LEATHERSTEERING WHEELby Bob Parsons

For those of you with a old or damaged leather steeringwheel I am sure that you have found out just howexpensive it is to replace it these days. I had an old Momosport wheel that was about 25 years old and in terribleshape at the top of the wheel. I paid about $100.00 for itback then, today they are going for $350.00. Look at thecost of replacing an air bag steering wheel and you’llchoke.

I found a leather shop in Norfolk whose owner recoveredmy wheel for just $100.00. He glued and then sewednew leather over the old wheel using a “baseball “ stich. It did make the wheel a little fatter but the trade off isgreat, a new, comfortable steering wheel with no roughspots.

The name of the shop is, Giovanni’s Leather Works, nearthe intersection of Little Creek Road on ChesapeakeBoulevard. Phone number is 588-0724. He can alsocustom make just about anything and does repairs onall leather goods. He has helped me out countless times.

I get no kickbacks from this promotion.

DRIVING 101by Michael Sacket

The grand finale for the Tidewater BMW-CCA 2001 driver-training season came and went like a shot from a gun. Everything froma beautifully restored 2002 to a very menacing looking black E-46/M3 was present on that cool crisp Saturday morning. Oh, andthere was also a 2001 Chevy Caviler sedan. Don’t be so quick to laugh; without so much as losing a single hubcap, the younggentleman actually drove quite well. After a stern warning from my wife not to wreck our car I set off for Langley raceway. I arriveda little early with my freshly completed Mike Robinson creation, a 1988 E-30/M3 with a 1995 E-36/M3 motor. As I drove down thatdusty road, anticipation and apprehension were beginning to set in. However, all of that would soon meld into a routine where all ofthe instructors were giving me individual attention and tips on handling my beast.

The day was split up into two sessions, the first focused on basic handling and vehicle control. I learned cool terms like weighttransfer, over-steer, and my personal favorite, modulation. To the average Joe this may sound like a lesson in phonics; but you can’treally appreciate The Ultimate Driving Machine until you have attended The Ultimate Driving School! My favorite morning drill wasthe skid pad. There’s nothing like driving in a circle at 40 miles per hour, and getting dizzy while doing it. Combine that with a high-speed slalom, navigating through a set of cones. Sound easy? Well, add to that getting as close as you can to those cones andgoing a little faster each time. Remember, “modulation” of the gas pedal is the key! After murdering more than my fair share ofcones I graduated to the braking drill. In my car, this was quite a rush. Power the monster up to 65-70mph then have a completestranger yell, “STOP!!!” in your right ear. And yes, I killed a few more cones.

After a quick lunch at Burger King and a visit to the Amoco to feed my baby and check the tire pressure we were back! Now it’sa whole new drill. Take all you just learned and put it to work on a small track laid out by the instructors. This is where things reallyget amusing. After getting over the initial nervousness, I made it through my first run. Whew! Talk about hairy. Now, it was theinstructor’s turn. With me sitting shotgun and Tom Bleh at the controls things really got exciting. Rocketing around the small trackin the M3 was complete and total exhilaration!

For the final round, and my personal highlight, of the day, Mike Robinson served as my instructor while I enjoyed every moment ofbliss weaving through turns and blasting down the back gentle curve. As my confidence increased I pushed the car at every turn.I can’t tell you how fun the last hairpin turn is when the tail of the car is coming out and you are getting on the throttle. Everythingwas really coming along great when it just happened out of the blue…. I was in the infield when the rookie in me comes right out andbefore I know it we are facing the wrong way. There it was, my first spin. At first, my life passed in front of my eyes. Right after that,I distinctly remember hearing my wife telling me to be careful and not to wreck the car. When the dust settled, I quickly surveyedthe area and burst into laughter.

By now I hope that you are wondering, “What is this driving school thing?” I would describe a driving school as the most excitingroller coaster imaginable. However, Joe Bivens has a more colorful way of describing the whole event. At a BMW-CCA drivingschool, you have an absolute blast IN YOUR OWN BMW, you will learn and understand how to avoid accidents and better handleyour car in a safe manner both on the track and on the road. The key to the whole day of instruction comes down to one point thatPete Lautares made early, “It’s not how fast you drive; it’s how you drive fast!”
