hghg March 2, 2017 An informational meeting was held at the Santa Monica Public Library on Wednesday evening to update parents, teachers, principals and district administrators on the current Norovirus outbreak, which has affected all schools in our district including McKinley Elementary. Superintendent Drati, district staff, and medical doctors from the LA County Department of Public Health, spoke about our response to the Norovirus outbreak within the district. All schools, including our school, has been directed to take strict precautions to eradicate this virus, which includes hand washing/sanitizing, increased cleaning, and exclusion of those who are presenting symptoms. Our school has been asked to continue with these precautions until each school reaches its baseline numbers (our baseline is 3 students per week being sent home with gastrointestinal illnesses. Our district nurse is working on providing us current data of students being sent home or staying home due to gastrointestinal illnesses). Each school is being monitored individually and we will be able to resume activities when our own level of new cases of this illness is within what is typical for our school, referred to as baseline. NOTHING IS BEING COMPLETELY CANCELLED but in the meantime, activities are being adjusted during the month of March. There is no easy way to make clean cuts to our programs and events and there are A LOT of factors being considered before a change is made. However, in general, the following activities will be affected:

· PTA/Exec Board Meetings – Ok to move forward with precautionary measures · Tutoring & Enrichment Classes – Ok to move forward due to short notice and child care concerns with precautionary measures · PTA Family Restaurant Nights – Ok to move forward with parent’s discretion · PTA Wednesday Snack Sales- Ok to move forward with precautionary measures · Field Trips – closely being monitored & TBD. At this time, field trips March 6-10th have been cancelled. · Lunch with your Child Fridays – postponed (TBD) · Volunteers – please check with your child's teacher · March 22 literacy night – Ok to move forward with precautionary measures · STEM Fair- postponed until May 12th · Jog a Thon- postponed until May 5th · Black History Program postponed (TBD) · Family Services Parent Group-postponed

5TH GRADE PARENTS: At this point, we have NOT postponed the Pali Trip. However, in the event that we do need to postpone the trip, we have secured 3 dates in May for the students to go to Pali. Pali Camp is holding these dates for us in case we need to postpone the March trip. We will continue to keep you updated on the status of the Pali Trip. We understand this is a very special trip for the students, and we will make every effort for the students to attend the trip in March. This has been an overwhelming issue and we are all doing the best we can. Thank you for your cooperation and flexibility as we all work together to get our kids and staff healthy. Dear McKinley Families,

Due to unforeseen circumstances surrounding the containment of the norovirus, we have decided to reschedule the STEM Fair to a later date: May 12, 2017. The time will remain the same from 5-8 pm, with project set up from 3-4 pm. The good news is that the children will have more time to work on their projects including spring break. We will also be extending the due date for returning signed contracts and proposals to Friday, March 31st. Information packets are currently available in the main office.
