HELPING CHILDREN IN LESOTHO
This week we focus our prayers, fasting and almsgiving on Lesotho, where many children lack access to quality education. Only 73% of primary school-age children in Lesotho are enrolled in school. Give to your Rice Bowl this week to support communities working with CRS to provide educational opportunities for children.
Remember the needy in our community. Food is collected all year, not just at the holidays. Please bring non-perishable foods to the church for distribution.
Palm Sunday Bake Sale St. Philip Center Sat, Mar 23 & Sun, Mar 24. We need all kinds of baked items: pies, cookies, breads, candies or your specialty, and people to help set up the sale. The success of the bake sale depends on all of us.
IF A POPE RESIGNS AND ANOTHER IS ELECTED,
ARE THERE IN EFFECT TWO POPES? No, there are not. A person is not ordained pope as though this were a fourth category in the sacrament of orders: deacon, priest, bishop, pope. Rather, he is elected bishop of Rome. Canon law says: “The Roman Pontiff obtains full and supreme power in the Church by means of legitimate election accepted by him, together with episcopal consecration; therefore, one who is already a bishop obtains this same power from the moment he accepts his election” (Canon 332.1). Thus, a person is pope because he has a particular office—bishop of Rome. Contrast this with the Dalai Lama. He is believed by his followers to be the incarnation of a Buddhist deity. In their eyes he is in himself a special person, not a person with a special office. The pope has this special office because he is bishop of Rome. When he is no longer bishop of Rome, he no longer is pope.
LENTEN CROSS You are encouraged to remove a cross. The following week, after you carry out the practice, place a flower on the Lenten cross. By the end of Lent, our Lenten Cross will have “blossomed” into a beautiful cross of flowers, a visual sign of our Lenten sacrifices, prayers and practices, offered for our sins and the sins of the world.

2013 Annual Catholic Appeal – “Faith with Charity and Love” The Annual Catholic Appeal, which supports the work of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Norwich, will be conducted in every parish over the next two weekends. The theme of this year’s campaign is: “Faith with Charity and Love.” Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal has a tremendous impact on the lives of others. The ACA is a united effort in which all Catholics in the Diocese of Norwich are able to join together to act in “Faith with Charity and Love.” As we serve and sacrifice, our stewardship helps us to further the mission and ministry of the Catholic Church in our region. Mr. Peter Harding as Director of Housing will identify opportunities to repurpose vacant or underused diocesan buildings, such as schools, to help the homeless. Bishop Cote described the mission as "Our needing to find ways to put these assets to good use for those most in need."
