Saturday, March 3, 2012 Last Thursday, The Prime Mnister of Aruba opened the first symposium by TNO Caribe under the auspices of Jan Ebbing and his team. This symposium was organ- ized for all stakeholders slated to work with TNO on the realization of various projects to make Aruba a green energy sustainable is- land. One of the discussions during the symposium was an explanation of what exactly is a “living lab” and how this will be developed. The sym- posium, titled “Roadmap of a sustainable Aruba 2020” was graced with the presence of the Directors of WEB, ELMAR, FCCA, and SETAR executives. Members of the Supervisory Board of Utilities N.V. and various advisers in- volved in energy programs were also in attendance. Everyone is aware of the fact that TNO was brought to Aruba for two main purposes. One purpose is to establish a scientific institution of learn- ing with a far reaching repu- tation which will afford Aruba an opportunity to build a third economic pillar...on the area of knowledge. The second purpose for TNO’s existence on Aruba is to pursue a change in Aruba’s energy into one that is sus- tainable, according to Prime Minister Eman. Eman is of the opinion that we must de- velop a third economic stream which fits in with the “Green” concept. Eman con- tinued to remark that within six months we will most probably be inaugurating an- other windmill park which would generate 40% of en- ergy from the wind. Those closest to this project know how difficult this process was. In order to create sup- port for sustainable develop- ment and to create a transition from the present to the future, requires a great deal of energy and congenial- ity to make that happen and to guarantee a stable and prosperous development, ac- cording to Eman. According to the govern- ment, the “livng lab” that is to be developed on Aruba, is not just a simple idea but a process of education and a step we must take for the en- tire community so that we can develop sustainable en- ergy. SEATTLE (AFP) - The Re-publican race to choose theparty's White House candidatemoves today to Washingtonstate, in the last stop before thenation's vote bonanza onSuper Tuesday next week.

The far northwestern USstate bordering Canada is tra-ditionally a Democratic bas-tion, but also has lots ofself-described independentvoters who can take part in theRepublican caucuses, poten-tially skewing the results.

Mitt Romney, who has re-gained his frontrunner statusafter defeating surging Chris-tian conservative Rick Santo-rum in two polls earlier thisweek, got a boost on the eve ofthe weekend Washington cau-cuses.

The latest Public PolicyPolling (PPP) survey gave thelead in Washington state toRomney with 37 percentagainst 32 percent for formerPennsylvania senator Santo-rum, 16 percent for Ron Paul, and 13 percent for Newt Gin-grich.

Romney, campaigning inthe Evergreen State on Friday, trained his fire exclusively onPresident Barack Obama, re-turning to his frontrunnerstrategy of rising above hisRepublican rivals' fray.

Although in past racesWashington state has largely

been off the beaten track formost campaigns, all four ofthe remaining candidates inthe race to take on DemocratObama in the November elec-tions have campaigned here.

Texas RepresentativePaul's strong support amongthe young and independentscould boost his chances in thestate, which sends 43 dele-gates to the Republican con-vention in August.

But leading rivals Santo-rum and Romney -- who hasregained his footing after win-ning easily in Arizona and sur-viving a high-stakes primarytest in his native Michigan --will battle hard for a pre-SuperTuesday boost.

The latest PPP poll was aturnaround from two weeksago, when Santorum -- whoscored a hat-trick of wins lastmonth in Colorado, Minnesotaand Missouri -- led with 38 per-cent to Romney's 27 percent.

The Washington caucuses -- which are non-binding --come just days before SuperTuesday, when 10 states willvote for their Republican can-didate, who will be crowned ata party convention in August.

In the topsy-turvy battle todecide which Republican can-didate will take on Obama,Romney has now won sixstates, Santorum four and for-mer House speaker Newt Gin-grich one.

(AFP) - Engineering profes-sor Donald Sadoway onThursday used an old-schoolchalk board at the prestigiousTED gathering to write theformula for a liquid batterythat could one day cut theneed for new power plants.

"The way things stand, electricity demand must be inconstant balance with sup-ply," Sadoway told the tech-savvy audience in southernCalifornia.

Inexpensive batteriesmade from liquid metalcould store electricity fromsolar panels, wind farms, orexisting generation facilitiesand save it for when it ismost needed.

That would be a majorchange from today's con-sume-it-now-or-lose-it sys-tems.

"The battery is the en-abling device here," he said."With it we could draw elec-tricity from the sun evenwhen the sun doesn't shine."

Sadoway and his team ofstudents at Massachusetts In-

stitute of Technology wereso confident in their creationthat they started LiquidMetal Battery Corporationand plan to have bistro-tablesize models out in two years.

Microsoft co-founderBill Gates is among thecompany's backers.

The company plans toeventually bring to market a

liquid battery the size of a 40-foot shipping container andcapable of holding enoughelectricity to serve the dailyneeds of 200 typical UShouseholds.

"You could have these bat-teries in the basements ofbuildings drinking up powerin the wee hours," Sadowaysaid.

"It means we don't have tobuild more plants, powerlines just for peak use," hecontinued. "The limits areway out there, not only interms of what it can do for re-newables."

The key metals in the bat-tery are common vanadiumand magnesium, the profes-sor explained as he chalked abasic chemical equation onthe board.

The attorney generalsought the information --which would have included re-search drafts, handwrittennotes and emails -- via what isknown as a "civil investigativedemand" under the state'sFraud Against Taxpayers Act.

But the Virginia supremecourt came down on the uni-versity's side, saying Cuc-cinelli's bid had no legalstanding because the univer-sity was neither a "person" nora "corporation" under the actand therefore could not beprobed.

Also, Cuccinelli "did notsufficiently state what the at-torney general suspected Dr.Mann did that was 'false orfraudulent,'" the ruling said.

The Union of ConcernedScientists hailed the ruling andsaid Cuccinelli was part of a"small but vocal minority in apointless and costly investiga-tion."

"We applaud the high courtfor reaffirming that Mr Cuc-cinelli didn't have a legal legto stand on in his pursuit ofMann's and other scientists'private correspondence," saidMichael Halpern, programmanager for the UCS scien-tific integrity program.

The case was brought bystate attorney general KenCuccinelli, a skeptic of globalwarming, against the Univer-sity of Virginia where wellknown climate scientistMichael Mann taught from1999 to 2005.

Cuccinelli had tried to ob-tain Mann's communicationsrelating to grants he receivedto conduct climate science re-search, alleging there mayhave been data manipulated toshow a rise in global tempera-tures linked to fossil fuel use.

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oilprices reversed course Fridayafter Thursday's rumor of aSaudi pipeline fire sent crudesoaring.

After the Saudis, theworld's largest exporters ofcrude, denied the rumors, prices sank in all major mar-kets.

New York's main contract,West Texas Intermediatecrude for delivery in April, shed $2.14 to $106.70 perbarrel, one day after hitting anine-month high at $110.55.

In London, Brent NorthSea for April dived $2.55 to$123.65 per barrel.

The Brent contract hadsurged on Thursday to$128.40 -- the highest levelsince July 23, 2008 -- after anIranian media report of apipeline fire in Saudi Arabia.

"The jump in price wasprompted by an Iranianmedia report of an oilpipeline explosion in SaudiArabia," said Commerzbankanalyst Carsten Fritsch.

"Even if the original storycame from Iran and no doubtwas spread deliberately, themarket clearly believes there

to be an increased risk of sup-ply shortfalls," he added.

A slight pullback in saber-rat-tling over Iran from the US andIsrael also helped prices ease.

US President BarackObama warned against anypremature military actionagainst Iran over its allegednuclear weapons program, saying Tehran was feeling thepressure of severe sanctionsand isolation.

"The only way historicallythat a country has ultimatelydecided not to get nuclearweapons without constantmilitary intervention has beenwhen they themselves take[nuclear weapons] off thetable," he told The Atlanticmagazine.

At the same time, IsraeliPrime Minister Benjamin Ne-tanyahu, in Canada ahead ofmeetings in Washington withObama next week, said hisgovernment would not pres-ent "red lines" to the US formilitary action against Iran.

Both though clearly re-served a military option, withObama saying all options re-mained possible and warning"I don't bluff."

It's important to protect yourchildren's skin from the damag-ing effects of the sun. No matterwhat they're doing or what timeof year it is, if they are outdoors, they need to be protected.

Aruba is one of the placesin the world where the sun isthe strongest. Located only12.5 degrees north of the equa-tor, the sun shines with maxi-mum strength and penetratesthe atmosphere with a maxi-mum amount of UV rays. What most people don’t knowon water and sand, whichmeans that even in the shadeyou need protection.

Protecting the skin from thesun during childhood and ado-lescence is important in reduc-ing cancer risks later in life. Bybuilding safe sun habits intoyour family's daily routine, you will make your childrenunderstand and get used tobeing protected against the sunand they will become more

aware of the harmful effects itcan have to their skin. Parentsshould take the lead by givingthe good example; childrenwill respond better when theysee their parents protectingtheir skin as well. Important recommendations:
