We create chemistrythat makes creativity love efficiency.

The goals of society are sometimes at odds with nature. It is something we can work on though, which is why we are co-creating solutions that seek to benefit both the world and all the people who live in it. When more people benefit from a world in progress, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry.

Investing in Green Tech with Impact and Bringing Innovative Solutions to Markets – A Global PerspectivePRESENTED BY GTEx / GCCAPanel Discussion

Innovation is a key focus in many aspects of today’s global society. It permeates into all sectors of the economy. The value chain for innovation is well discussed in many circles. Much has been focused on the development, demonstration and validation aspects. Yet commercialization of innovation needs to also reference visible benefits including return on investment, job creation, economic growth, and improved living conditions. Sun, Wind and Clouds: The New Era of Smart Off-GridPRESENTED BY Miriam Tuerk, Clear Blue TechnologiesSPARK Talk

Smart Grid is a powerful force in the world of energy generation, and it has now come to environmentally-friendly off-grid systems. Leveraging wireless networking, data streaming and cloud software, remote control and monitoring have raised the reliability and performance of solar and wind powered systems to that of on-grid. At the same time the mass production and lower cost of solar panels, emergence of LEDs, and rising utility costs make off-grid systems cost-beneficial. Attend this session to learn about Smart Off-Grid and how green energy combined with the latest advances in hardware and software drive down costs, drive up reliability and benefit the environment.

The Collaborative Economy and Shareable CitiesPRESENTED BY Claudia Monteiro de Aguiar, European ParliamentSPARK Talk

There is nothing new about sharing. Indeed it is one of the oldest behaviours of our society. What is new about it is the introduction of new technologies. The digital revolution enables us to connect more and more and it is at our fingertips. In the sharing economy, we host, fund, teach, drive, care, guide, and cook for friends and strangers alike. In the sharing economy there is a better allocation of resources and space underused, key for developing shareable cities. These new forms of business models result in significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation. However, these new p2p platforms do not exist without critics and challenges to our society and governments. This SPARK Talk will focus on how we can answer the challenges.

CCS: The Reports of my Death are Greatly ExaggeratedPRESENTED BY Andre Boulet, Inventys Inc.SPARK Talk

Once hailed as the king of climate change mitigation, carbon capture and storage has come under heavy fire from a number of influential organizations and publications. But, as André Boulet insists, failing to deploy CCS more than doubles the costs of meeting the 2°C goal therefore maybe carbon capture and storage shouldn’t be public enemy number one, just the present approach. You’ll gain a greater understanding of climate change mitigation measures and the future of carbon capture — and maybe, a way forward.

How can technology enhance the way we view sustainability, advance a more restorative economy, and create an all-encompassing way to manage and share information? Guardians of the Zero Waste HabitatPRESENTED BY Peter Tsantrizos, Terragon EnvironmentalSPARK Talk

Normally, communities rely on extraction and transfer as their central waste management strategy. This approach does not work for small communities that are isolated, especially those in the Arctic that have no roads or sewers that can be used to haul waste away from the community. Technologies that enable the “zero waste habitat” will be presented as well as an effort to train the people living in isolated communities on how to implement and service these technologies. Additionally, the technologies presented enable the recovery of energy and clean water from all the materials we consider waste, resources of particularly high value to these communities.

Waste Not Want Not: How Wastewater Might Be the Ultimate Renewable Energy SourcePRESENTED BY Lynn Mueller, International Wastewater Heat ExchangeSPARK Talk

In the search for new and sustainable energy sources few people realize that there is an energy source flowing beneath the surface of our cities. Sewage! This abundant, free energy source remains mostly untapped. In fact, A 2005 U.S. Department of Energy study estimated that 350 billion kilowatt-hours of heat energy is flushed down the drains in the United States each year alone. What if it was possible re-use this energy? Nothing smelly about that!
