The first two readings today help us to better understand the Gospel narrative

according to Saint John. Both readings point out that only the Spirit of God gives life, transforming our realities to sanctify it. The death of Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, at first appears to be a story of grief and pain. However, as the sisters of Lazarus grieve for the death of their brother, the Lord comes to transform their grief into hope, and death into life. This is the third theme that accompanies the elect on their journey to initiation. It is the sign that accompanies us in our preparation for the celebration of Holy Week. The Church awaits our participation in the living water that quenches our thirst, the light that heals our blindness for the pain of our neighbor and the celebration of everlasting life. These are the signs that anticipate the celebration of the Paschal Mystery during the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter).

From the Desk of Father Kurt In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus is presented to us as the source of new life. His friend Lazarus has been dead now for four days and he is met by Lazarus’s sister Martha who confronts Jesus, with the quote, “If you would have only been here my brother would not have died.” So often we too confront Jesus with the question when someone we love passes away. Why now God? Did it have to happen now? This is especially the case when the deceased is young or someone we count on for love and support. Jesus allows the death of his friend to show the world that He has power even over death.

We are witnessing a lot of death these days from the reports that we

are hearing from the effects of the deadly Corona virus. People that

are young and old alike, people that we might know, love and count on.

I am not sure what God’s plan in this might be, but I know that He is

asking us to trust in Him. That He has power over death and will

manifest His glory in the midst of this great time of trial and pain.

As you know, we continue to have expenses at St. Theodore Catholic Church with a major portion going to the salaries of our staff, faculty at school, and school staff. We would greatly appreciate it if you would send in your contributions during these weeks, even if not attending Mass. You may also consider making electronic payments – call the office for details. Let us continue to keep each other in prayer. May God bless you.

Love in Christ Father Kurt Farrell
