FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear St Martin’s Families and Friends, Thank you to all members of our school community for your contribution to what has been a busy, productive and enjoyable term at St Martin’s. Lent and Easter Lent and Holy Week prepare us for Easter, Christianity’s most ancient and important yearly feast. Easter

celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, “powerful in word and deed”, who was seized

and crucified by his enemies during the Passover feast in Jerusalem. On Easter morning, he rose from the

dead, appearing to his followers and assuring them of God’s favour. Easter recalls these events yearly.

Today Lent and Easter are times for hearing the “Good News” once more and celebrating the sacraments

that are signs of the power of Christ’s death and resurrection. They remind us of our great journey with

Christ. Once more these seasons call us to believe and recall our baptismal life. The late Cardinal Basil

Hume of Westminster reminds us that “The great gift of Easter is hope – Christian hope which makes us

have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can

shake”.

The best way to assist your child to know and experience the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection at Easter is to have them join with your faith community for the Holy Week and Easter liturgies. Holy Week and Easter liturgy times in are included in this newsletter. School Cross Country Thank you to all staff and parents who assisted with the Prep-Year 6 School Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday this week. The carnival was an enjoyable experience for the children. Special thanks to Mr Jacobs who coordinated this event

and thank you also to Mr O’Leary, Mrs Mellon, Miss McDowall, Miss Kedda and Signora Enza who have devoted their time to training the children each week. NAPLAN Dates National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) dates for 2017 The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), an annual Australia-wide assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 over from 9-11 May this year. Students in these year levels will participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Detailed information can be found on the NAPLAN website: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support If you are interested in looking at sample tests follow this link: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/the-tests Holiday Reading Good reading skills provide a solid foundation for learning. Once children learn the essential skills to read, they require regular practice for reading to continue to develop. Reading is like anything else that requires practice to develop such as running long distance races, riding a bike, playing a musical instrument or painting a masterpiece. Children of all ages benefit greatly from reading each day. Please encourage your child to read, learn sight words and play board games during the holiday period. Children in the early years benefit greatly from work with individual sounds, sight words and essential word families (words ending in –at, -ot, -in, -ill, -ing, -ate, -all, -an). The NSW Department of Education has produced an excellent website to provide advice in all areas of learning including reading. Please refer to: www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au Disabled Parking Parents and visitors are asked to please leave the disabled parks for visitors who need them. Last week, I heard from a family who were saddened because they couldn’t access a school event due to these spaces being occupied by cars which didn’t have disabled tags displayed. Let’s all work together to be mindful and considerate of the needs of others. My best wishes to you all for a blessed Easter and a restful holiday with your families. Term 2 commences for students on Tuesday 18 April.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATION Mayfield Road Traffic Please be mindful of the traffic rules in Mayfield Road. When exiting St Martin’s, the traffic can only turn left and NOT RIGHT. Recently many cars have been turning right, breaking the traffic rules and putting the safety of our students at risk. Please take care when in and around our school to ensure the safety of all. Happy Easter and Safe Holiday I would like to wish the families and students of our wonderful St Martin’s community a safe and happy holiday as well as an enjoyable and replenishing Easter break. Thank you for your support in helping us to settle your children into the 2017 school routine. Hard to believe that our Preps have been here for one term already. Take care and see you in Term 2.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Holy Week and Easter A reminder that we will be remembering the last week of Jesus’ life tomorrow, Thursday 30th March at 11:00am. This liturgy is being led by our Year Six Spirit Committee, and I thank them for their participation, enthusiasm and respect in preparing for this commemoration of a significant time on our liturgical calendar. All parents are warmly invited to attend this celebration. The real Holy Week will commence on Sunday 9th April, and I would encourage as many students as possible to attend a Mass on this weekend, to feel the excitement of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Holy Week is a time for gathering, remembering, praying, being silent and rejoicing. It is a time for Christians to gather and experience the promise of new life in the risen Christ. I wish for you and your families, time this Easter to fully engage in these liturgical celebrations in our church. Please see the “From the Parish” section of this newsletter for more information on Mass times over Holy Week and Easter Weekend. Given that Easter Sunday falls on the last weekend of the school holidays this year, we will be celebrating the resurrection of Jesus at the commencement of Term 2. This liturgy will be held at 8:30am on Wednesday the 19th April. Project Compassion - Love Your Neighbour - THANK YOU! On behalf of St Martin’s School, I would like to extend a massive THANK YOU to all who donated to the 2017 Project Compassion Campaign. The final collection at Monday’s assembly this week saw over $1000 collected, which brings our

total amount raised for Project Compassion so far to $2235- well beyond our goal!! I am once again amazed by and so

grateful for the compassion and generosity showed by our great school community. Our Year 5 students have coordinated some extra fundraising events as a part of their Religious Education learning this term, so we will have a final figure in the first newsletter of Term 2. Thank you for all the support you have extended to me during my first term in the APRE role. I am loving the professional challenge, and truly feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful school community. I wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday, and blessings for the Easter season. I look forward to seeing you all in Term Two!

CONFIRMATION 2017 Enrolments have now closed. Over 100 candidates and their families now turn their minds and hearts to thoughts of what it means to belong, what our community believes and just how gifted we all are. This group’s blessing from Masses last weekend is one which all families may like to pray together, for our candidates as they prepare for 30 May, and for themselves:

May the God of hope fill you with every joy in believing. May the peace of Christ abound in your hearts.

May the Holy Spirit enrich you now and forever. Amen.

The A and B teams’ titles are due to the QC Cup convenor requiring a team in Group A and a team in Group B both Age Divisions. After attending the last two carnivals the top levels in both Age Divisions are very competitive and will be a fantastic experience for our aspiring netballers.
