PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
We are a Catholic faith community who believes in God
– Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – and who follows Christ’s teaching
of love and service. As a parish founded by immigrants, we recognize that we continue to be
a multi-ethnic parish. We welcome everyone
by ministering to their various needs and provide all with the opportunity
to grow intellectually in Christ. Through our sacramental life, we are empowered to build up
the Body of Christ and to become a more vibrant
and faith-filled community.

Third Sunday in Lent: The Parable of the Fig Tree
Gospel Lk 13:1-9

Third Sunday in Lent: The Parable of the Fig Tree
Gospel Lk 13:1-9 Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So, cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not, you can cut it down.’” No one is exempt from suffering. In today’s Gospel Jesus responds to a question about sin as the reason for a recent tragedy. Jesus answer is No. Tragedies can come to both good and bad. However, the greatest tragedy is not recognizing our need for repentance. No one knows when God will call us for an accounting of our life. The tragedy is knowing and not preparing. In Lent we are given a second chance. In the fig tree parable, we are the fig tree and God is the Gardner offering forgiveness. He is giving us, again, another opportunity to accept His love and turn from sin. We must act NOW and accept his call. Reflection: Do I fear Confession? Do I believe that God is truly present in the priest? Pray to the Holy Spirit for courage in overcoming any barriers keeping us from receiving the ultimate grace of forgiveness found only in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Third Sunday in Lent:

The Holy Father speaks… Lent is a time to ask for God’s grace to chip away at hypocrisy, which is seen in the natural human attempt to appear “worthier than we are”. The Corporal works of mercy are the kind of fasting God wants most. “When you share your bread with someone who is hungry, invite into your home someone who doesn’t have one or is a migrant, when you look for clothing for someone who is without—when you focus on that, you are truly fasting. Too often, people feel they are righteous because they belong to some association that does good or because they go to Mass every Sunday and are not like “those poor things who don’t understand”.
