From the Pastor’s Laptop On Wednesday, March 13, the family of God had the joy of
receiving a new Holy Father, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first pope from the Americas, who is an intellectual, an advocate for the poor and a loyal son of the church in regards to devotion and moral teachings. He chose the name Pope Francis in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy and of the poor.
Pope Francis’ first words were certainly very congenial and collaborative. His first reaction was to ask everyone to pray for Benedict XVI. Several times he spoke of brotherhood. Three times he referred to our Heavenly Mother Mary. It was very thoughtful of him to mention the Cardinal Vicar of Rome who would do most of the work overseeing the Diocese of Rome. As an intellectual he deftly referred to his double task of guiding both the Church and Rome and all of the churches: “Let us begin this journey together…this journey of the church of Rome, which is to preside over all the churches in charity. It is a journey of fraternity, of love and of trust between us.” You might say his speech was “interactive” because he got everyone to pray with him and then to pray for him!
Today we begin Holy Week listening to Jesus’ words at the Last Supper, which reminds each of us — and also our new pope — that Jesus wants each of us to be humble servants. At the Last Supper “an argument broke out among them about which of them was the greatest.” So Jesus said: “Let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as the servant.” Let us pray for Pope Francis as he begins his ministry as the servant of the Servants of God!

How To Make Palm Sunday Crosses
Pope Francis
The new pope chooses a name and this name is very significant because it signals the vision he sees for his leadership of the Church. For example, Cardinal Giovanni Montini chose the name Paul VI, signaling that he saw his role as a time for evangelization and announcing the good news of Vatican II. Pope John Paul II chose his name to show his papacy would be the implementation of Vatican II, chose a name stemmed from the two Popes who oversaw the council, Pope John XXIII and Paul VI. Now Cardinal Bergoglio has chosen the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi. By choosing Francis, whose own call began with an answer to the voice of God, saying, “Francis, go rebuild my Church,” our new Pope has taken the name Francis to show us the way forward in this moment of New Evangelization. It is a time to renew and rebuild the Church, and the model is the personal holiness of Francis. By not choosing a name like Gregory, which would signal reform of the Church through governance and authority, Pope Francis has signaled that the Church renewal can only happen through personal holiness, and not simply programs and policies. The Church is composed of living stones, and those stones must be shaped by love of Christ crucified and the poor, as St. Francis illustrated. The great artist Giotto painted, in the upper Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the humble and poor Francis holding up the Pope’s home Church, St. John Lateran from collapsing, so too now only time will tell how Pope Francis will go about the work of building up the Church. His humility, holiness, and love of the poor will make him well equipped, as Paul referred to his own apostolic role (1 Cor 3:10), to be a wise master architect in the building up of the Church for a new springtime.

Profiles in Stewardship by Tammy Menezes
FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP: Plaza Refreshments are being served this morning by our St. Joseph’s Boy Scouts.
Alfonso and Judy Chavez
Whenever I recognize one of our faith stewards at St. Joseph’s, I invariably get told by that steward, “Oh, you shouldn’t have,” or “Oh, that was nice, but I don’t need the recognition,” etc. I fully expect that Alfonso “Al” and Judy Chavez will tell me exactly the same thing. They, and their entire family, do not offer themselves for God’s work because they seek recognition. They do so because they know that our response to God’s call is as natural as taking a breath of air: we are all stewards of our faith and living stewardship is simply responding to that call. Alfonso quietly and responsibly serves as one of our key funeral reception volunteers, is the ministry leader of our ushers, is active in K of C and is on our Festival Committee. Judy has served as our greeters ministry leader, has for years served as our festival games/prize chair and continues to serve as a liturgy volunteer. As we travel through our Lenten journey, take time to ask yourself, “How am I answering God’s call?” I am thankful for Al and Judy’s response to that call.
Serving Responsibly
The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the
Eucharist, provided our Lenten Mission this year. Our parish was blessed
by their presence. During their stay, they

Apostolic Blessing "Urbi et Orbi":
Brothers and sisters, good evening!
You know that it was the duty of the Conclave to give Rome a Bishop. It seems that my brother Cardinals have gone to the ends of the earth to get one... but here we are... I thank you for your welcome. The diocesan community of Rome now has its Bishop. Thank you! And first of all, I would like to offer a prayer for our Bishop Emeritus, Benedict XVI. Let us pray together for him, that the Lord may bless him and that Our Lady may keep him. Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be… And now, we take up this journey: Bishop and People. This journey of the Church of Rome which presides in charity over all the Churches. A journey of fraternity, of love, of trust among us. Let us always pray for one another. Let us pray for the whole world, that there may be a great spirit of fraternity. It is my hope for you that this journey of the Church, which we start today, and in which my Cardinal Vicar, here present, will assist me, will be fruitful for the evangelization of this most beautiful city. And now I would like to give the blessing, but first - first I ask a favour of you: before the Bishop blesses his people, I ask you to pray to the Lord that he will bless me: the prayer of the people asking the blessing for their Bishop. Let us make, in silence, this prayer: your prayer over me. [...] Now I will give the Blessing to you and to the whole world, to all men and women of good will. [Blessing] Brothers and sisters, I leave you now. Thank you for your welcome. Pray for me and until we meet again. We will see each other soon. Tomorrow I wish to go and pray to Our Lady, that she may watch over all of Rome. Good night and sleep well!
O God, who in your providential design willed that your Church be built upon blessed Peter, whom you set over the other Apostles, look with favor, we pray, on Francis, our new Pope and grant that he, whom you have made Peter's successor, may be for your people a visible source and foundation of unity in faith and of communion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

CORRESPONSABILIDAD (STEWARDSHIP)
Por el Tammy Menezes
Alfonso and Judy Chavez
Sirvamos Responsablemente

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam:
Eminentissimum ac Reverendissimum Dominum, Dominum Georgium Marium
Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Bergoglio qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum
Bendición Urbi et Orbi:
Hermanos y hermanas, buenas tardes.
Amen.
