    IMPROVING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTThank you to all students, staff, parents/guardians, and community members for thecontinual focus for improving student achievement this year. Our strongpartnerships enable our students to demonstrate learning and accomplishment

    Thank you to everyone for this focus on student success!We also had many sports teams competing during the winter sports season. OuRobotics Club has again worked hard fundraising and have created a mostintelligent robot which has been bagged and tagged for transportation to twocompetitions. Thank you to parents and the community for supporting all of ouefforts. Many thanks to the staff and students who work hard to make our manyclubs and teams a success each year.

    School Council has participated in our second Video Conference meeting for SchooCouncil Members in Area 5 on Monday, February 27. We welcome more parentsguardians/community members to attend the next meetings scheduled for March26, April 30 and May 23, at 7:00 pm in the school library.

    Students have just finished choosing their courses for the 2012-2013 school yearWe also look forward to continued successes with after school homework clubsTIPS, math clinics so that our students always have support and help todemonstrate learning. I thank all of our teachers for the focus on crediaccumulation. Our staff are excellent instructional leaders delivering Ontariocurriculum to all students from the Secondary Learning Centre, Secondary LifeSkills, as well as all secondary Ontario curriculum Grades 9-12. Thank you staff.

    Our Literacy Team started our SCI Lit Blitz on February 27 and will continue untiMarch 28, with feedback and practice for our Grade 10 students writing thisgraduation requirement on Thursday, March 29.

    On Friday, April 20, all students in Grade 12 need to have their Community ServiceHours completed and sheets recorded in our Student Services -Guidance Office sothat our graduates will be crossing our stage in June.

    GRAD GOWN RENTALSEach year graduating studentshave the option to rent a grad gownfor Commencement. The rental

    fee of $25 includes a graduation cap that the

    student keeps. Rental fees must be paid April5, 10, 11, 12 or 13 at lunch in Room 201.

    YEARBOOKSYearbooks can now be pre-ordered from Ms.Moritz in the library. The cost is $40 if you pre-order and $45 if you wait until the books arrive in

    June. Students who pre-order by May 24th will have a chance towin a free yearbook.

    Grade 10 and previously eligible students will be writing the Ontario SecondarySchool Literacy Test on the morning of Thursday, March 29, 2012. A change intransportation will allow students who are not writing the test to come 4 hours laterfor the afternoon classes. Coop students are expected to be at theirplacements as usual. Life Skills and the Learning Centre will run a normalfull day schedule.     from either 4-5 pm or 6-8pm. We welcome parents/guardians tovisit their son/daughters teachers to understand courseexpectations and assessment.

    TIPS FOR SUCCESS OSSLT 2012

    Grade 10 students and those not previouslysuccessful will be writing the Ontario SecondarySchool Literacy Test (OSSLT) on the morning of

    Thursday, March 29, 2012. A letter outlining the test was senthome with students required to write the test on Thursday March1, 2012. The TIPS: Test Improving Performance Strategiesprogram is currently running after school to support all studentswriting the test this year.

    Students and parents can learn about the test and look atsample questions by following the links at the Education Qualityand Accountability Office website: www.eqao.com.

    A change in transportation will allow students who are notwriting the test to arrive 4 hours later to enable all students toattend their classes (a compressed schedule of all periods 1, 2,4, and 5 classes has been developed). Bus pickup will beexactly 4 hours after their normal pickup time on March 29.

    BUY IN? BUY OUT?A CLARIFICATION FOR PARENTS...There are times during the school year when a

    special event is scheduled and students have the option of"buying in" to the event. The "admission fee" for these eventsare generally fund raising opportunities for the groups hosting

    the event. There have been two recent "buy in" events -- onefor the girls' hockey team championship game at the Stayner Arena on Friday March 2 and the other for the Sears Dramagroup presenting the play that was written, directed, and actedby SCI drama students on Wednesday March 7.

    Students who do not "buy in" to these events are expected toattend regularly scheduled classes. Attendance is taken toensure that students do not "skip" both class and the event.

    If you have any questions about Buy In events, please don'thesitate to contact Ms. Ellerby, Vice Principal.

    DRESS CODE REMINDERSWith the early onset of spring weather, parents/guardians are reminded about the SCI student

    dress code. Spaghetti strap tops, bare midriffs, short shortsand bare shoulders are NOT acceptable attire at school.Students should have an uninterrupted line of clothing coveringshoulders through mid-thigh at a bare minimum (pardon thepun). Students who are not properly dressed will be asked to gohome to change into more acceptable attire. Parents will becontacted. Thank you for your assistance in maintaining arespectable environment, suitable for learning.

    GUIDANCEStephen Fennell (from Georgian College) will bepresenting his financial aid seminar to graduating

    students on April 16th at 1:00 pm in the library.

    There will be a sign up in Guidance for students who wish toattend.

    interview time. Parents are always welcome to contactteachers about any concerns regarding student progress.

    STUDENTS AGAINST IMPAIRED DRIVINGStudents Against Impaired Driving will bring youour special SAID WEEK in May once again thisyear with various activities aiming to curb impaired

    driving. This group, for over 17years has been spreading the

    message that substance use, specifically alcohol and drugs,does not mix with driving and robs us of the lives of those wecare about. Stayner Collegiates S.A.I.D. group has the hopethat nobody in our school or community should lose theirlife because of substance abuse combined with driving.

    Would you like to get involved in this very important group in theschool? Together we can effect change in the way our friendsand family think. Listen for announcements of our meetings(we usually meet on Thursdays at 11:30 in Room 118) andcome take part in some of our fun and awareness-raisingactivities! Please dont drive impaired!

    CHESS CLUBThe Chess Club continues to meet in Room 118 at noonon Fridays. Bring your lunch and come join us! Room

    118 will welcome you on other days during the lunch hour whenpossible. It is always good to practice and be ready! We havebeen involved in tournaments this semester with Barrie Centraland Collingwood Collegiate, the last of which was on March23rd at C.C.I. We look forward to new membersall arewelcome to attend.

    FRENCH DEPARTMENTThe French Department welcomes Ms. Lamb thissemester! Ms. Lamb is doing a great job with the

    grade 9 applied students in period 1. Once again insemester 2, students taking French are encouraged

    to work hard at completing their work on time and to ask forhelp during lunchtime (we run a French Clinic Mondays,Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 12:40) or after schoolwhen in difficulty with new structures or concepts. Touchingbase with the French teacher while in the midst of a majorunit project or the day before an important unit test canmake a huge difference in terms of your success. Students

    are reminded of the French Department policy on the use of theinternet for translation from English to French. Like plagiarism,the use of internet translation sites is strictly forbidden . Ifin doubt, check with your teacher. Do not put your success orthat of others into jeopardy and do be aware that many of thesites do a very poor job. Preferably, use your own brainpowerand a French-English dictionary! Bonne chance cesemestre!!

    COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS:Attention Grade 12 Students! Many of youhave not yet completed your mandatorycommunity service hours.     Boston Pizza FundraiserThe prom committee will be hosting a BostonPizza Booster Night at the Collingwood BostonPizza restaurant on Monday April 2nd from 5 8

    pm. Tickets are $20 per adult or $10 for children 10 years andunder. This ticket price includes an all you can eat buffet of:Caesar Salad, Veggie Pasta, Meat Pasta, Veggie Pizza, Deluxe

    Pizza and Bandera Bread (garlic bread). Half of the proceeds ofthis event will go towards SCIs 2012 prom.     Semi-Formal PicturesThe SCI semi-formal was held on Thursday March8 and it was a huge success. We had a photobooth set up with fun props and decorations to takesome great pictures. The pictures are in! They will

    be displayed on the TV in the lobby so that you can take a lookat all of your pictures. If you would like to purchase any of thepictures, the prom committee will have order forms in the lobbynext week. Each picture is $2.00. Dont miss out on theseamazing memories. All proceeds are used for the 2012 prom .

    MP VISITS SCIMr. Scott Bowman, contacted our Member of Parliament,Dr. Kellie Leitch, to visit SCI and be a guest speaker forour law, history and civics classes. We had manystudents who attended the guest presentation with theirclass and teacher in our library, and everyone had theunique opportunity to meet with Dr. Kellie Leitch. Ourstudents learned about laws, history, life and politics. Wethank our MP, Dr. Kellie Leitch for her visit to SCI.

    ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY TEST (OSSLT)March 29, 2012

    BackgroundThe 2012 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) will be administered on Thursday, March 29, 2012.All Grade10 students, as well as those students who were previously not successful on the OSSLT, any out of province studentsplanning to graduate with an OSSD are eligible. Students enrolled in or who have passed the Ontario Secondary SchoolLiteracy Course (OSSLC) will not be writing the OSSLT.

    Transportation and SchedulingAn altered day with corresponding transportation and timetable changes are to be in place for all students:Transportation will remain the same.

    There will be an additional (later) bus run and pick-up as follows:The additional (later) run will arrive at our school approximately 4 hours later than usual (@12:30 p.m.).

    Special Education Secondary Life Skills and Secondary Learning Centre programs classes and programs will con-tinue as usual.

    Off-site Co-op programs Students with a.m. co-operative education placements who are not writing the OSSLT are

    expected to attend their morning placements and access their regular a.m. transportation. One co-op teacher will bemonitoring our program.

    We will ensure that the SCI bus pick up times are announced and posted in our school. Students will also be advised thattransportation at the end of the day will operate as usual. Parents/guardians will be fully informed of our schools OSSLTadministration plans. All students are expected to attend afternoon classes.

    The Varsity Girls Hockey team had a very successful 2011-2012 season. They finished with the season 6-1-1, losing theironly game in the Georgian Bay Championship against the defending champions from St. Thomas Aquinas in Tottenham.Special thanks are extended to our community coaches Kaitlyn MacDonald and Bart Chapman. Without their help, it wouldnot have been possible to have a team. Best wishes to our grade 12 players who are moving on to other successes nextyear! Congratulations to all girls on a great season!

    The Girls Curling Team had a successful season. They finished first in our zone and won an entry into GBSSA. The teamtravelled to Gravenhurst on Tuesday March 6th. In the first round they beat Eastview by a score of 7 - 5, in the final end.In the semi-final game they came up against a very strong Parry Sound team and were defeated. Congratulations on anexcellent season for Stayner Collegiate Curling.

    Stayner students recently participated at the Sears Drama Festival for the 11th year in a row. The festival, held this year inBarrie at the Mady Centre for the Performing Arts, had 15 entries from all corners of Simcoe County. The ten studentsrepresenting SCI worked very hard writing, rehearsing and performing their one-act play, Struggles, once at the festivaland once for their fellow students at SCI. At the awards ceremony Stayner picked up an award for direction (Mary Bruer)

    and an award for writing (Alekz Aubry). All participants should be very proud of their accomplishment and the difficult workthat went into the production. Besides Alekz and Mary the following students round out the cast and crew: JenniferDewan, Eric Potts, Natasha Milley, Sarah Miller, Samantha Kinghan, Jiyeon Lim, Melanie Connell and Riley Ekman.

    DENTAL BUS-SMILES!The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) booked an afternoon visit with SCI where the SMILES bus was parkedoutside our lobby area so that our students could access dental information and care. We had over 80 students who visit-ed the mobile facility. The bus is equipped with a dental chair, dental personnel and this mobile facility visits and connectswith all schools in our Board. We thank the SMDHU for their visit and school community partnerships with SCI.

    CYBER GNOMES COMPETE IN BOSTON REGIONALSAs this edition of the Spartan Speaks goes to press theSCI Cyber Gnomes team are in Boston, MA for the FIRSTRobotics Regional Competition from 22 - 24 March, 2012defending their 3rd place finish in 2011. FIRST (For In-spiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)was created to inspire young people to be science andtechnology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and tech-nology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, com-munication, and leadership. The SCI Cyber Gnomes, intheir 6th year, has embraced these values and have tak-en the challenge this year of building a robot that willcompete against robots from 24 other schools from theUSA, Mexico and Turkey. In this years challenge,Rebound Rumble, student-built robots compete to scorepoints by shooting basketballs into hoops of varyingheights during a match of 2 minutes, 15 seconds. The

    game opens with a Hybrid Period, when robots operateindependently from their student drivers. During these 15seconds, one robot on each alliance may be controlledusing Microsoft Kinect.
