The Rhone Valley of France is the epicenter for Syrah, producing some

of the most sought-after wines on the planet. However, since the first

Syrah vines were planted in 1986, the variety has also become a prize-

winning player in Washington, producing some of the state’s most

iconic wines. How does Washington Syrah compare to their French

counterparts and what makes Washington Syrah unique?

In this seminar, we’ll taste classic Syrahs from the Rhone, and then

dive headfirst into exploring what makes the great single-vineyard

Syrahs of Washington so compelling.

Chef Diego Galicia – Born in Toluca, Mexico, Chef Galicia moved to San Antonio in 2002. He graduated from The Culinary Institute of America in San Antonio (CIA) and diversified his culinary experience working at Michelin-starred restaurants Atelier Crenn in San Francisco, and Moto in Chicago. Galicia also worked at Texas fast-food chain Taco Cabana while saving funds towards realizing his dream of opening his own restaurant, Mixtli.

Chef Rico Torres – A native of El Paso, Texas, Chef Torres knew even as a child that the kitchen held his heart. In 2013, Torres opened Mixtli with Chef Diego Galicia and has continued to dedicate himself to his craft. Each time a new menu concept is developed for Mixtli, Torres reviews historic Mexican cookbooks and recipes at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s library, where he has a special partnership.

Born in Hilo on the Big Island, Chef Sheldon acquired his love for cooking from his parents and attended the Maui Culinary Academy. Sheldon was a finalist and the Fan Favorite winner in Bravo’s “Top Chef: Seattle,” and has recently opened his own restaurant, Tin Roof, in Kahului, Maui, serving up local dishes in take-out bowls. His mix of innovative modern cuisine and adherence to tradition influence his dishes and help shape his menus.

Brooke Williamson was the winner of Bravo’s “Top Chef All-Stars” Season 14, and the runner-up in “Top Chef:

Seattle.” She hosted MTV’s “House of Food,” and has also appeared on “Knife Fight,” “Watch What Happens Live,” “Home & Family” and the international talk show, “Arise 360.” Along with husband Nick Roberts, Williamson is co-owner and co-chef of several L.A.-area ventures including Hudson House, The Tripel, Playa Provisions and the culinary retail boutique Tripli-Kit, along with a fast-casual Hawaiian restaurant called Da Kikokiko.

Chef Jason Wilson – Chef Jason Wilson’s American regional cooking style has earned him numerous awards, including the 2010 James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest. As Culinary Director for Fire & Vine Hospitality, Chef Jason develops the vision and direction for the El Gaucho family of restaurants, Miller’s Guild, The Lakehouse, Civility & Unrest and Eritage resort in Walla Walla. He has also played an influential role as the Executive Chef and Product Developer for Coffee Flour.

Chef Michael Jordan – Michael Jordan joined El Gaucho Bellevue in October after nearly 12 years as Chef/Owner of the award-winning Las Vegas restaurant Rosemary’s. Chef Michael worked alongside Emeril Lagasse at Emeril’s NOLA and opened Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House. He attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., served on the Program Advisory Board of Directors at the Le Cordon Blue College of Culinary Art and spent five years teaching at The Seattle Culinary Academy.
