OPENING FRIDAYThe Croods () Cavemen —

they’re just like us! — or so The

Croods seems to be saying. The ani-

mated adventure features a strong,

star-studded cast and dazzles visual-

ly in wondrously colorful, vibrant 3-D,

although the script doesn’t pop off

the screen quite so effectively. It’s

the prehistoric era, and while her

family prefers the comforting safety

of hiding fearfully inside a cave,

teenager Eep (voiced by Emma Stone

in her usual charming rasp) longs to

see what’s outside those stone walls.

The themes aren’t exactly ground-

breaking, but the oohs, ahhs and

scattered laughs come from the vari-

ous creatures the Croods discover

along their journey. With the voices

of Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage,

Catherine Keener and Cloris Leach-

man. Rated PG, 92 minutes. — The

Associated Press

Ginger and Rosa () In the

early 1960s, two teen girls (Elle

Fanning and Alice Englert) spend

time together around London, mostly

to avoid their fractured home lives. A

longing for maturity by hanging out

with the wrong adults and commit-

ting stupid actions ends up damag-

ing the friendship. A sub-theme of

the Cuban missile crisis and possible

nuclear annihilation lurks in the back-

ground. With Annette Bening,

Christina Hendricks and Oliver Platt.

Rated PG-13, 90 minutes. At the

Angelika Dallas and Cinemark West

Olympus Has Fallen A disgraced

Kevin Spacey is Lester Burnham and Mena Suvari is Angela Hayes in American Beauty, which won the Academy Award

for best picture in 2000. The film is part of the Cinemark’s Classic Series, which screens a best picture winner each

Wednesday through April 10. The drama starring Spacey and Annette Bening examines the dysfunction of a suburban

family. The Burnhams’ life is set to collide with the Fitts, the troubled family next door. While Lester awakens from existen-

tial ennui thanks to an infatuation with his daughter’s friend, Angela, his daughter, Jane (Thora Birch) forges a friendship with

Ricky Fitts, the boy next door. Meanwhile, Carolyn is both distracted by and devoted to the illusion of perfection. Both a farce

and a tragedy, American Beauty is an unflinching look at the poverty of intimacy and imagination that hounds American

material prosperity. Rated R, 122 minutes. The film will screen at 2 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at Denton’s Cinemark 14, 2825

animated film, a nerdy blue alien

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone() The only incredible thing here

is the way this comedy makes Steve

Carell so thoroughly and irreparably

unlikable. In a film about magic

tricks, this is the most difficult feat

of all. Carell plays Burt Wonderstone,

a selfish and flashy Las Vegas magi-

cian who once ruled the Strip along-

side his longtime friend and partner

(Steve Buscemi), but now finds his

act has grown outdated and unpopu-

lar. Even within the confines of a

comedy sketch, Burt would seem

one-dimensional and underdeveloped

with his hacky jokes and tacky

clothes. Stretched out to feature

length, the shtick becomes nearly

unbearable. Jim Carrey gives it his all

as an up-and-coming gonzo street

magician, but Olivia Wilde gets little

more to do than serve as Burt’s assis-

tant. Rated PG-13, 101 minutes. — AP

Jack the Giant Slayer (1/2) A

big-budget, 3-D retelling of the Jack

like the unlikeliest pairing yet of

director Bryan Singer and writer

being smart, thrilling and a whole lot

of fun. It actually ends up being

pleasingly old-fashioned. Shot in 3-D

2-D re-dos — the film looks crisp and

clean. Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor

Oz the Great and Powerful (1/2)

This prequel aims for nostalgia in

older viewers who grew up on The

Wizard of Oz while simultaneously

enchanting a newer, younger audi-

either successfully. Director Sam

Raimi also is trying to find balance

between creating a big-budget, 3-D

kitschy, darkly humorous horror. The

results are inconsistent. At its center

is a miscast James Franco as the cir-

tant Wizard of Oz. Mila Kunis, Rachel

Weisz and Michelle Williams play the

three witches he meets. Rated PG,

Worth getting intoBy Boo AllenFilm Critic

The new release Admissionis a comedy. But it is a seriouscomedy.

It’s easy to enter Admissionthinking it must be a knee-slapping laugh-riot, filled withbroad gags and ample pottyhumor. Considering that itstars reigning queen of come-dy Tina Fey along with PaulRudd, the popular star ofmany recent romantic come-dies featuring every attractivefemale in Hollywood, the filmseems primed for high silli-ness and crotch shots.

The comedy comes, but thetwist arrives in its unexpected

seriousness. Life-altering themes such as

abandonment, lost opportuni-ties, maturity, resentment andparental neglect pile up.Perhaps its seriocomedyapproach can be traced to JeanHanff Korelitz’s source noveland Karen Croner’s sometimesunfocused screenplay.

The approach might also be

traced to other sources: direc-tor Paul Weitz and Tina Fey’sreputation and persona. Feyhas rarely branched outside ofcomedy, so that when shedelivers some of her dialogue,it can be difficult to determineif the line is funny, or funnyjust because Fey is saying it.

Weitz seems to revel in thisambivalent material, such asin his 2004 film In GoodCompany and 2002’s About aBoy, which deftly mixedpathos and humor and starredanother popular romanticcomedy actor, Hugh Grant.Weitz also directed the origi-nal American Pie, which goesto show he has bona fide com-

edy skills.Fey plays Portia Nathan, an

admissions officer at Prince-ton University. She takes herjob seriously, as well as every-thing else in her obsessive-compulsive, overly orderedlife. When dumped by herboyfriend of 10 years, playedby Michael Sheen, she makesa recruiting trip, staying withher cantankerous mother,Susannah (Lily Tomlin).

At a private school, head-master John Pressman(Rudd) introduces Portia to aprecocious but underachiev-ing student, Jeremiah (NatWolff ). Pressman, an oldclassmate of Portia’s, then

lands a bomb by telling herJeremiah might be the son shegave up for adoption when shewas in college.

Whether Jeremiah — who’sapplying to Princeton — turnsout to be the son provides thehook for the film to explore itsprodigious themes. A subplotinvolves whether Portia, know-ing that the quality of mercy isnot strained, will compromiseher principles for him.

Admission defies beingpigeonholed, particularly whenactors stop and deliver deadlyserious speeches only to pep-per them with one-liners.

But such a mix gives thefilm its undeniable flavor.

Admission

Rated PG-13, 110 minutes.Opens Friday.

Funny waters run deep in ‘Admission’

into a sun-baked hell where bikini-

clad, gun-toting college babes serve

as our guides. As writer and director,

Korine wants us to be appalled and

aroused, hypnotized and titillated. He

wants to satirize the debauchery of

girls gone wild while simultaneously

reveling in it. And he pulls it off. The

corruption of formerly squeaky-clean

Disney superstars Selena Gomez and

Vanessa Hudgens may be Korine’s

cleverest trick of all: They get to

show some range, we get to gawk.

But James Franco steals the whole

movie away when he arrives about

halfway through as a wanna-be

gangster rapper named Alien. Rated

COVER STORY

By Lucinda BreedingFeatures Editor

“Collage: Denton DanceFestival” is a local tradition bynow.

Presented by host companyDenton City ContemporaryBallet, “Collage” is preciselywhat its title says. In twoevenings, emerging dancersshare the stage with profession-al and semiprofessional per-formers. What’s meaningfulabout the 2013 fest this week-end is the return of a companyalumna.

Lisa Racina-Torre, the artis-tic director of Denton CityContemporary Ballet and thefounder of “Collage,” has takenadvantage of the event to showher students from DentonDance Conservatory wheretheir hard work could takethem. More rehearsals, charis-

ma and commitment couldpave a young dancer’s way to aspot in a company that tours orcreates dance in North Texas.

Over the years, Racina-Torrehas also clued local audiencesinto another significant find-ing: The region’s dance scenehas grown. And that’s with nei-ther the fanfare nor the mediasupport afforded to indie musicin North Texas.

The regional dance scene hasrefused to be cowed by the eco-nomic downturn, which hasshuttered a number of per-forming arts nonprofits. Den-ton in particular has enjoyed anumber of successful upstarts— Big Rig Dance Collectiveand CholoRock Dance Theatrechief among them, withGreenSpace Dance still chug-ging along with plenty of cre-ative ingenuity.

“Collage” is also a good time. It’s an evening to spend in the

presence of people who can’thelp but move when the timecomes to express the silly, thesoulful and the sensuous.

This weekend, “Collage”brings Denton City Contem-porary Ballet back to the localstage, where the dancers willspeak a peculiar and provoca-tive language that has both bal-let’s regal bearing and moderndance’s unsinkable joy.

Simple Sparrow DanceCompany returns to the festi-val, bringing its blend of classi-cally trained dancers and post-modern moves and ideas. Thesmall but plucky company pro-motes new work by Dallas-FortWorth dancers and choreogra-phers, so freshness is a part ofthis group’s bag of tricks.

Also on the program:imPULSE Dance Project fromFort Worth. The small, youngdance company takes moderndance out of the hall andplunges it into the the everydayenvironment. The company

just performed at the Out of theLoop Festival at the WaterTower Theatre in Addison.

Company member RachelCummings is an alumna ofDenton Dance Conservatoryand a former member of

DancExpress, which is nowDenton City ContemporaryBallet. Cummings, who hasacted as the assistant artisticdirector of the contemporaryballet, earned her bachelor’sdegree in dance from TexasChristian University.

FireWalk Dance is the brain-child of North Texas choreogra-pher and dreamer LeslieGraves. The company is any-thing but fussy. Graves’ missionseems to be bottling joy inbuoyant bodies, then lettingthem play and fly when themusic starts or the moodstrikes.

Denton City ContemporaryBallet will perform new anddeveloping choreography —expect jazz, modern and ballet.GreenSpace Dance, a frequentstage partner with the contem-porary ballet, will show offsome of its latest work.

ABOUT THE ACCOMPANIST“Collage 2013: Denton Dance Festival” includes two guest artists:Russian ballerina Yulia Ilina and pianist Kostyantyn Travinskyy. The award-winning Ukrainian pianist moved to Denton in 2003 afteraccepting an invitation to study with University of North Texas Collegeof Music piano faculty member Vladimir Viardo.
