Of course, as decent and orderly Presbyterians, we have a nominating committee to nominate people to the nominating committee! And that nominating committee is going to need everyones help to find the right people to serve. The job of the PNC is to search far and wide to find the person God is calling to be the next installed pastor of Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. Thats a heavy responsibility. It also involves a great deal of time and commitment. While there could be a certain appeal to being indeciding whom to call as pastor, there is much work involved. Using the Task Forces report, the PNC will fill out a Mission Information Form (MIF) describing the church and its needs to be matched with the Personal Information Forms (PIF) of interested pastors. They will receive hundreds of forms, each read by every PNC member, which will need to be winnowed into consider,” “maybe, and nocategories. There will be some travel. It is not unusual for PNCs to meet every two weeks or, sometimes, every week. It is a given that members need to be mature in their faith and committed to the Lord and His church. They need to be willing to pray hard and listen harder for the voice of God. While it is important to have the various constituencies within the congregations demographics represented, each person needs to be able to see the big picture and do what is best for the whole church. A PNC is no place for someone with an axe to grind or an agenda to push. As Barbara Ross, our presbytery liaison, reminded the congregations nominating committee, serving on a PNC involves a calling. Just as it will require much prayer on the part of the PNC to find the next pastor, it will require much prayer from the congregation to help the nominating committee find the right people to serve on the PNC. What’s a Pulpit Nominating Committee? (What Does It Do and Who Should Be on It?) Before much longer, the Mission Study Task Force will present its report to the session for approval. After session approval, it moves on to the Presbytery of Western North Carolina’s Committee on Ministry (COM). When COM gives the nod, it will be time to elect the Pulpit Nominating Committee (PNC). Of course, as decent and orderly Presbyterians, we have a nominating committee to nominate people to the nominating committee! And that nominating committee is going to need everyone’s help to find the right people to serve. The job of the PNC is to search far and wide to find the person God is calling to be the next installed pastor of Banner Elk Presbyterian Church. That’s a heavy responsibility. It also involves a great deal of time and commitment. While there could be a certain appeal to being “in” deciding whom to call as pastor, there is much work involved. Using the Task Force’s report, the PNC will fill out a Mission Information Form (MIF) describing the church and its needs to be matched with the Personal Information Forms (PIF) of interested pastors. They will receive hundreds of forms, each read by every PNC member, which will need to be winnowed into “consider,” “maybe,” and “no” categories. Candidates will need to be notified whether they are under consideration and updated regularly. Interviews will need to be scheduled and conducted (sometimes online, sometimes face-to-face). There will be some travel. It is not unusual for PNC’s to meet every two weeks or, sometimes, every week. It is a given that members need to be mature in their faith and committed to the Lord and His church. They need to be willing to pray hard and listen harder for the voice of God. But there are specific skills that are needed, too. In addition to a chairperson, other roles are secretary/record-keeper, organizer, communicator (written and oral) with candidates, session, and congregation…,and there probably are other helpful skills.

Traits required of every member are the ability to maintain confidentiality and to be “team players.” Confidentiality is important because the committee needs to able to speak frankly in meetings. Also, an unsuccessful candidate could be crippled in his/her present work should word get out that she/he was even exploring a change. It is not about “secrecy.” It is about working with integrity in regard to all concerned. While it is important to have the various constituencies within the congregation’s demographics represented, each person needs to be able to see the big picture and do what is best for the whole church. A PNC is no place for someone with an axe to grind or an agenda to push.

As Barbara Ross, our presbytery liaison, reminded the congregation’s nominating committee, serving on a PNC involves a calling. Just as it will require much prayer on the part of the PNC to find the next pastor, it will require much prayer from the congregation to help the nominating committee find the right people to serve on the PNC. Lunch with God There once was a little boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of root beer, and he started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old woman. She was sitting in the park just staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to her and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old lady looked hungry so he offered her a Twinkie. She gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. Her smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered her a root beer. Once again, she smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave but before he had gone more than a few steps; he turned around, ran back to the old woman, and gave her a hug. She gave him her biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, “What did you do today that made you so happy?” He replied, “I had lunch with God.” But before his mother could respond, he added, “You know what? She’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!”Meanwhile, the old woman, also radiant with joy, returned to her home. Her son was stunned by the look of peace on her face and he asked, “Mother, what did you do today that made you so happy?” She replied, “I ate Twinkies in the park with God.” But before her son responded, she added, “You know, he’s much younger than I expected.”

Too often we under-estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally! submitted by Judy King

From the Back Pew… and the Permanent Funds Ministry

A penny saved is a penny earned. Just think - if Edgar Tufts had saved a penny for every dollar he spent creating his heritage of buildings and programs and good works that helped so many people. If he had saved $40 worth of pennies, and invested it in just one share of Coca-Cola stock, and the dividends earned by that share were reinvested… Several years ago the Coca-Cola company estimated that that one share and its earnings and stock splits would be worth more than $9 million. Can you help the Permanent Funds Ministry follow the same concept: investing, paying forward, growing our heritage of buildings and programs and good works that help so many in 2020?

Food for Thought….

Lunch For Habitat Volunteers

As we have many times in the past, our church will be providing lunch for many Habitat Volunteers in March. Our dates are March 3 for a group of 32 and March 17 for a group of 40. There are sign up sheets in the church office for anyone who would like to help. These are for volunteers only – food will be decided at a later date. If you have any questions, please call Carol Larson at 898-9341. Meals need to be taken to the work site by noon of the designated date.

Cracker Barrel Comes to BEPC….March 8 Come join us for a Down Home Country Breakfast, Sunday, March 8 and 9:30. We may noy have an "Uncle Herschel" in our congregation, but we will have breakfast items worthy of the Cracker Barrel menu. The church will provide pancakes, bacon and scrambled eggs. There is sign-up sheet in the church office listing preferred items, but if you don't want to cook, fresh fruit, juice. store bought muffins or other items will be welcome. This gathering will replace the Second Sunday Brunch so there will be no Sunday School that morning. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the King Fellowship Hall as we share food,

fellowship and fun together. This event will be hosted by members of The ROMEOS and JULIETS. Luana Anderson, Chair - Fellowship and Nuture

Fred Deaton, Jr. Fred Deaton, died January 24 at the age of 88. He was not a member or affiliate, but the Deatons worshipped frequently at BEPC, especially during the summer, for years and years. Significantly, he was a huge supporter of both Lees-McRae College and Grandfather Home for Children, serving on the GFH board for multiple terms. Our own Dudley Gilmer wrote the book, The Child Now Before Us that is the history of Grandfather Home. Fred and his wife, Gwen, funded the publishing of that book.

REMINDER - TIME TO CHANGE THOSE CLOCKS!

It’s that time again - remember to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed on Saturday March 7th. This is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and other alarm devices.

Exciting New Enneagram Workshops Coming Soon! Meg Julian has offered to teach Enneagram workshops over the next three months. What is Enneagram? At first glance, the sessions might look like another “personality test,” and personality factors significantly into it. But it goes much deeper than that. It helps us see core fears, motivations, desires, strengths, blind spots, stressors, and sins that most often trip us up. When used in Christian contexts, it shows us aspects of God’s character and connects us more closely to the truth that we are made in his image and meant to reflect him in the world. Workshops will be held in the Faith Seekers Classroom at 4:00pm on Mondays, March 9, and April 6.

Stephen Ministry If you would like to know more about Stephen Ministry, we have a new link on the church website. It takes you to many individual videos from both the ministers and the people they have helped. It is very inspiring viewing. Remember, if you are hurting, or know of someone in the congregation who is, you might want to consider a Stephen Minister. If you think a Stephen Minister can be of service, contact our pastor, Rev. Deck Guess, Murry Haber, Janet Speer ([email protected]), or you can call the church office at 898-5406.

Confirmation Classes Begin March 1 Confirmation class will begin Sunday, March 1 at 5pm and continue through the month of March. All interested young people (usually middle and high school) and their parents are invited to the first meeting, which will be an introduction to the process and overview of expectations. Please let the office know of your interest by email [email protected] or phone 828-898-5406. Each meeting should run an hour or so.

March Dedication Bill & Sue Ferguson

The Comfort Makers joyously dedicate their February comforter to Bill and Sue Ferguson. Sue was a school psychologist and was the editor of her church newsletter before she came to us. Bill directed a YMCA, then went on to his work for the United States Naval Academy. Both have been instrumental in making our church even better. Both sing in the choir, and Bill has served on session, and is currently serving on Stewardship and Finance, the Worship Committee, and lines up the Lectors

for us every week. Thank you, Bill and Sue for making us even better Christians. Each month we display the dedicated comforter in the hallway by the office. It will be hanging on the wall for the entire month, then given to a worthy cause such as Habitat for Humanity or Ram’s Rack.

Walking with Shadows

Walking with Shadows is a support group that meets to discuss, share resources, and discover new ways of coping with family and friends with mental challenges. The group meets the second

Monday of each month at 7pm in the Margaret Tate Parlor. An important part of our group is to find ways that members can place themselves in a healthy mental state so they can better serve their loved one. Any further questions may be directed to Janet Speer [email protected]. The next meeting will be March 9th.

Have you been looking for the Scholastic Book fair? I've got good news for you! The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the King Fellowship Hall from Monday, March 9th-Thursday, March 12th. You will be able to shop/browse children's literature along with some adult books, cook books and Christian inspired titles. Come by Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-2:00pm or please join us for our traditional Pancake Supper on Thursday evening, March 12th from 5:00-

7:00pm. This is a fun event for all ages; enjoy pancakes, friends, entertainment and book shopping. I also want to remind you that a percentage of all book sales comes back to the preschool which we use for supplies and materials. Did you know that reading increases knowledge and vocabulary, lowers stress, and supports your child’s emotional growth? But perhaps the best benefit is the lasting bond you create with your child when you read with them.

Visit the Book Fair with your child to discover new books together! AC Marriott, Preschool Director

Lenten Bible Study On Wednesdays at noon, Rev. Deck Guess will lead a study of the Gospel of John. Each session will last one hour. The study runs from Feb. 26 through April 8. Consider this study as one way to increase your spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. If you have not already done so, please notify the office of your interest. (But don’t let that keep you away if it becomes a last-minute decision!) The study group will meet in the Margaret Tate Parlor which is on the top floor next to the elevator.

Celebrating 100 Years! One of our former members, Marietta Breidenthal, will be celebrating her one-hundredth birthday on April 4. She has recently moved to a different section at Twin Lakes Healthcare Center where she has lived for a number of years. Marietta’s daughters hope that church and community friends will send their mom cards, maybe mentioning good times remembered. They say their mom has some current memory lapses but enjoys revisiting old memories including their many years in Banner Elk.

Marietta and husband Ward were energetic leaders in all areas of BEPC for many years. Among other things, she taught the adult Sunday school class, directed summer Bible school for children, led Presbyterian Women, youth groups and young women’s groups, worked with the Vietnamese “boat family” our church helped sponsor, was instrumental in developing our newsletter, and was one of the founders of the Comfort-Makers group. Ward and Marietta were known for their hospitality and hosted many fun-filled occasions at their home where he played any song we could name on the organ or piano as the group sang, always trying to name a song Ward didn’t know. Our church family was blessed by this dedicated family, including daughters Marietta, Lori and Eva. Please remember to mail Marietta a happy birthday wish for April 4. Marietta Breidenthal

Prayer Ministry

The Prayer Ministry Team is comprised of dedicated, discerning individuals praying daily not only for church and world-wide concerns, but also for every church member throughout the year. Five family groups/individuals are selected from the church directory to be the focus of weeklong prayer, ensuring that every congregant will be covered in prayer at some point over the year. Any additional prayer concerns can be addressed by filling out a “prayer request “ card in the pew or an email to one of the team members. It is our hope to meet the prayer needs

of individuals and families of BEPC. Please keep the prayer ministry in your prayers as we keep you in ours.

Emily Garrett El Wilson Jan Miller Alice Johnson Chris Zimmer Donna Bender Marsha Jones Remembering the Reverend Susan Rice

As some of you know, Susan Rice served as associate pastor at Banner Elk Presbyterian about 20 years ago. Her main area of ministry was with youth and families, with which she made a very positive impact, as well as being an energetic and enthusiastic pastor for the entire congregation. Her son, Andy, is now a Presbyterian pastor in West Virginia. Susan passed away two years ago after a long struggle with cancer. Until the time of her death, she had worked tirelessly for Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties in southwestern Florida. This past Christmas Eve, several church members were able to speak with Bob Waller, Susan Rice’s husband, when he came to Banner Elk to attend our evening service on his way to visit family in Chicago. During this conversation, Bob left a note that he asked us to share with our present members: “Susan loved Banner Elk Presbyterian Church and its congregation. Susan always wanted to return to the mountains and I think she has. I know that many people who loved her were not able to attend the service, but they may want to know that her ashes are scattered in these gorgeous mountains, so she has come home. Please prayerfully consider helping to build a Habitat home in Susan’s name. I would also like to invite a Banner Elk Presbyterian Crew to join us in Lee County to raise the walls of a home in her honor.” If you are interested in more information about the Reverend Susan Rice-Waller Project, please contact Bob at [email protected] or 239-248-7673. One Anothering Small Groups for Women Beginning right after Easter, women in the church and community are invited to become part of a small group of 6 - 8 folks that will focus on the different “one anothering” passages from the New Testament (i.e. love one another, pray for one another, hold one another up, bear one another’s burdens....) while at the same time getting to know the other members of the small group in a significant way. The groups will meet weekly for two hours each session and will run for eight weeks. Involvement will require that members make weekly participation a high priority and commit to confidentiality about things shared within the group. There will be an opportunity to study Scripture together, pray for and with one another, and share pieces of our personal stories and challenges with the group. The number of women who sign up will determine the number of small groups that are formed. Meeting times will be determined once groups are created, but there will likely be a morning group (10 a.m. - noon) and/or an afternoon group (2 p.m. - 4 p.m.). An evening group could be formed if numbers and interest make it feasible. If you are interested in being part of one of these groups, please contact Alisa [email protected] 828-898-5406 at the church office and let her know your preference of a morning, afternoon, or evening meeting time. We’d like to have your response by March 15, so that we can begin planning the session(s).

Tea Time at BEPC

A good time was enjoyed by all at the Valentine Friendship Tea held recently in the Margaret Tate Parlor. Lovely refreshments and Dedy's own special English tea provided the perfect setting for friends old and new to sip and chat. Thank you to Luana for arranging this happy event.

Saint Olga of Kiev March is Women's History month. Years ago, Dr. Albert Schweitzer wrote, “A woman does not have to be an angel in order to be a saint.” A great historical example of that statement was Princess Olga (903-969) of Kiev, the first woman ruler of what is now much of Russia. Olga inherited the throne in the year 945 after a very large tribe of pagans killed her husband. The pagans then proposed that it would be profitable for her and her country if she would marry the pagan ruler. Olga sent word of agreement, and suggested that the pagans send as much of their leadership as possible to meet with her, and serve as her escort to help ensure the full support of her people. The pagans agreed and sent almost all of their many chieftains to her palace estate. When the chieftains arrived, Olga gave them a warm welcome and invited them to refresh and clean up in her large bathhouse. After they entered, she locked the doors from the outside and set fire to the building. Soon thereafter, she led an attack into pagan country, took over their territory, and obliterated their army whose leaders were back in her bathhouse. Years later, she asked for God’s forgiveness, was saved, baptized, and became the very first Russian ruler to convert to Christianity. She then started spreading Christianity in her country, built churches and cathedrals, and was later canonized as the first Russian saint of the Orthodox Church. She was not an angel, but she was a saint. God may have been angry about some of the things Olga did, but Micah 7:18-19 and 1 John 1:9 say, ‘God does not retain his anger, because he delights in mercy; he will have compassion on us; he will forgive us, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ Saint Olga was forgiven, and WE are forgiven. All thanks be to God.

Update on Gordon and Hui Causby

Our Special Loved Ones in China Gordon and Hui Causby, teachers we help support in China, report that due to the coronavirus, they have been waiting in Thailand until they are allowed back into China later. They currently are in Vietnam visiting and serving with a team of teachers there. They continue to teach their students online. Their three small children are with them and adjusting to the change. At the end of February, they will fly back to the US, as they wait to return to their work and life in China. Gordon, son of our Catherine Upchurch, grew up in this church and married Hui, a lovely Chinese-American he met at Georgia Tech. After graduate school, the dedicated couple began teaching high school sciences in China. When back in this country, they have often spoken to our congregation about their work. At this point, we of course want to keep the Causby family in our prayers. They also ask for us to keep their Chinese students and friends in our prayers during this challenging time. For their current address and more details, Gordon’s latest letter is in the church office.

Behind the Scenes Many people work behind the scenes to keep our church services and activities running smoothly. Recently we caught Susan Blalock in the midst of one of the helpful little jobs she does, filling worship bags which are available for children who remain in the sanctuary during worship service. The bags provide a Bible story, writing pads and crayons, book, stickers and other things children quietly enjoy. Thank you, Susan! Children look forward to finding these bags waiting for them in the narthex each week. The office could not run without its many volunteers. In addition to answering the telephone calls, they take care of many other jobs which helps the office staff tremendously! We especially thank our regular “Monday-Thursday” Volunteers. Chris Zimmer works Monday mornings. She digitizes the Sunday CD’s, checks the kitchen paper supplies to see what needs to be ordered, and records sales tax records for reimbursement. Jan Miller is our “Tuesday Girl Friday” and she takes care of recording the

information on the Sunday Friendship Register cards. She writes the acknowledgement cards for memorial gifts and also helps with recording sales tax records. Susan Blalock is our Wednesday volunteer. In addition to helping with filling the worship bags and working on the Shepherd notebooks, she has polished all of the silver pieces used for communion (a huge job!!) And last, but certainly not least, our Thursday volunteer is the ever cheerful Tony Fortune. He is our main proof-reader for the bulletins and stuffer of inserts. He puts the hymn numbers on the board in the sanctuary and fills the oil candles, just to name a few jobs! Again, we appreciate so much our regular office volunteers who make life a lot easier for the Church Office Staff!! Thank you!!
