I applaud our Sisterhood. Like other Sisterhoods of other congregations throughout the country, the Mishloach Manot project of Tiferet, while in all likelihood conceived as a fundraiser, has turned out to be a mitzvah fraught with meaning. The basis for Mishloach Manot is Esther 9:22. “They (the Jews) were to observe them (the 14th and 15th of Adar) as days of feasting and gladness and sending of portions to one another…” Although rabbinic authorities make it quite clear what constitutes “portion,” somehow during the last several decades the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot was blown way out propor- tion. As a result, in some communities Mishloach Manot morphed into the ex- travagant and the extortionate. As far as our rabbinic sages are con- cerned, if one gives another a rad- ish and a rutabaga on Purim, that in- dividual has fulfilled the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot – no, there is no, nor has there ever been a requirement, that Mishloach Manot consists of foods requiring two different blessings. How this evolved into lavish fruit or food baskets is pretty much pathetic, in that Judaism has always stressed that gifts to the needy supersedes foods to the prosperous, that cost a pretty penny. Put differently, why budget, say, a thousand dollars for Mishloach Manot, when you can apportion two hundred and fifty dollars for Mishloach Manot, leaving seven hundred and fifty dollars to be allocated to the needy? I believe that it is fair to say that the origin of “Jewish Time” predates what has been generally accepted to mean being fashionably late. “Jewish Time” is disproportionate. How else can we explain five different festivals no less all within the month of Tishrei to be followed by the month Marcheshvan with nary a one? With Pesach a mere month after Purim, what is one to do with a myriad of Mishloach Manot, as one prepares to purge the pantry of all chometz? The last thing (other than a mouse) one wishes to deal with in one’s kitchen, is junk food and food that has never tickled one’s fancy. Let’s face it, one man’s poisson (French for fish), is another man’s poison. If you don’t be- lieve me, consider administering the Gefilteh Fish test to those who were not raised eating it at your next Shab- bat/Festival meal. As difficult as it may be for us to fathom, when it pertains to Mishloach Manot, there are those who would much rather receive a can of sardines than a chub of salami. Vegans on the other hand would say “no thank you” to both. Living in an economy and lifestyle where there are limitless tastes that have been acquired, perhaps we are better off with Mishloach Manot that pose no problem for Pesach, such as an apple and an orange – provided of course the recipient isn’t one who has sworn off fruits. There are four mitzvot that are part and parcel to Purim: The hearing of the Megillah being read in the evening as well as the next morning, the Purim Se’udah or banquet, gifts to the poor, and Mishloach Manot. While I have never conducted any study, I cannot help but feel that the emphasis has all too often been placed on the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot, while the other three mitzvot of Purim go wanting. At the risk of prioritizing, there are no brachot or blessings that are specific to the Pu- rim meal, the giving of gifts to the poor and the Mishloach Manot. There are however three brachot that precede the reading of the Megillah and two brachot that follow the reading of the Megillah. Proper proportion would dic- tate that the same interest, effort and energy that accompany the Mishloach Manot accompany the other three mitz- vot of Purim, especially the reading of the Megillah. With disproportionate time, effort, ener- gy, and expense accorded to Mishloach Manot, with a disproportionate amount of Mishloach Manot inundating Jewish homes a mere month before Pesach, with disproportionate interest given to the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot, while the Mitzvah of hearing the Purim Megil- lah goes wanting, I say Kol HaKavod to the sisterhood of Tiferet! Those who were involved in our congregational Mishloach Manot are to be commend- ed for the proper proportion proffered to one of the four mitzvot of Purim. I applaud our Sisterhood. Like other Sisterhoods of other congregations throughout the country, the Mishloach Manot project of Tiferet, while in all likelihood conceived as a fundraiser, has turned out to be a mitzvah fraught with meaning. The basis for Mishloach Manot is Esther 9:22.“They (the Jews) were to observe them (the 14th and 15th of Adar) as days of feasting and gladness and sending of portions to one another…” Although rabbinic authorities make it quite clear what constitutes “portion,” somehow during the last several decades the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot was blown way out propor-tion. As a result, in some communities Mishloach Manot morphed into the ex-travagant and the extortionate.

As far as our rabbinic sages are con-cerned, if one gives another a rad-ish and a rutabaga on Purim, that in-dividual has fulfilled the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot – no, there is no, nor has there ever been a requirement, that Mishloach Manot consists of foods requiring two different blessings.

“Jewish Time”

is disproportionate. If you don’t be-lieve me, consider administering the Gefilteh Fish test to those who were not raised eating it at your next Shab-bat/Festival meal.

There are four mitzvot that are part and parcel to Purim: The hearing of the Megillah being read in the evening

as well as the next morning, the Purim Se’udah or banquet, gifts to the poor, and Mishloach Manot. While I have never conducted any study, I cannot help but feel that the emphasis has all too often been placed on the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot, while the other three mitzvot of Purim go wanting. At the risk of prioritizing, there are no brachot or blessings that are specific to the Pu-rim meal, the giving of gifts to the poor and the Mishloach Manot. There are however three brachot that precede the reading of the Megillah and two brachot that follow the reading of the Megillah. Proper proportion would dic-tate that the same interest, effort and energy that accompany the Mishloach Manot accompany the other three mitz-vot of Purim, especially the reading of the Megillah.

With disproportionate time, effort, ener-gy, and expense accorded to Mishloach Manot, with a disproportionate amount of Mishloach Manot inundating Jewish homes a mere month before Pesach, with disproportionate interest given to the mitzvah of Mishloach Manot, while the Mitzvah of hearing the Purim Megil-lah goes wanting, I say Kol HaKavod to the sisterhood of Tiferet! Those who were involved in our congregational Mishloach Manot are to be commend-ed for the proper proportion proffered to one of the four mitzvot of Purim.SIMCHAT PURIM TO ALL
