SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…[email protected] Hello Members, After reading the reports turned in, I have a much better sense of the work being put into your clubs. So many

fundraisers, so many projects and all this is done for the communities you all live in. Many clubs support children and veterans. Some support the conservation situation. There is such a variety among the 28 Clubs. Great volunteerism, great members and great job!! The SGVD Convention is April 17 & 18, 2020. If you haven’t registered, there is still time. Linda Koontz should

be contacted if your Club hasn’t given you information on how to attend. I’m so excited about Convention and the many things we have planned for you. This will be at the Courtyard by Marriott in Monrovia. Think about attending CFWC Convention on May 15-16th at LAX. This is close enough to attend and you will

have an opportunity to see the installation of Pam Ament as the new CFWC President. You don’t want to miss out. Our District will look strong, so plan now for May!!! For more information go to cfwc.org Thank you all for your support with the District Fashion Show. It is our only fundraiser.

SGVD 1ST Vice President…Rosette Clippinger…909-525-8828 It's amazing how much of the word's virtue comes from one little word: "TRY"

Trying something for the first time often calls for BRAVERY.

"Try, try, again," on the other hand, requires that sibling virtue: PERSEVERANCE

I would like to share with you an English poem written By Katherine Pyle:

How The Little Kite Learned To Fly

"I never can do it," the little kite said,

As he looked at the others high over his head.

"I know I should fall if I tried to fly."

"Try," said the big kite, only try!

Or I fear you never will learn at all.

But the little kite said: "I'm afraid I'll fall."

The big kite nodded: "Ah, well, good-by;

I am off." And he rose toward the tranquil sky.

Then the little kite's paper stirred at the sight.

And trembling he shook himself free for flight.

First whirling and frightened, then braver grown,

Up, up he rose through the air alone,

Till the big kite looking down could see

The little one rising steadily.

Page 4: March 2020...2 SGVD Executive Committee Meeting, Peppertree @ 9:00am 12 SGVD Art & Photo Contest turn-in at Covina Woman’s Club, 9:30 – 11:30 AM 13 SGVD Spring Council, Covina

Then how the little kite thrilled with pride,

As he sailed with the big kite side by side!

While far below he could see the ground,

And the boys like small spots moving round.

They rested high in the quiet air,

And only the birds and clouds were there.

"Oh, how happy I am," the little kite cried.

"And all because I was brave and tried."

Important: The membership number you turn-in on the April Data Blank form is the number CFWC uses for

your membership number for Reports. If you want your membership number to be correct then make sure you

get as many members on the Data Blank as you have, the fewer the late paying members the better. In fact, no

late paying members would be great.

Honor Your 25 year Members at SGVD Convention

I need to receive the names of your 25-year members by March13, 2020.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please remember that after April each year, when submitting New/Late Paying

Form, you attached the names of only those you are adding. You do not need to turn in your club roster. Only

NEW members need to be bolded, underlined , or highlighted , so we know who is new. The late paying

members names are needed, but do not need to be bolded.

It is not the Data Blank due in April. IT IS THE CLUB INFORMATION FORM and it must be signed by the

club President.

ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN … Esthela Torres de Siegrist …626-442-0354

All Children and Youth Need Help…So does the PTA

Stacey Tauscher once opined: “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow; yet, we forget that the

child is someone today.” How very true that is. For this reason, it falls upon us to provide today’s children and

youth with the tools and resources that will enable them to succeed at the present moment and for every

moment thereafter.

Many of us are now seeing Girl Scouts selling their delicious cookies outside a supermarket or even in their

front yard. Give them consideration and remember: For young girls, it may be their first experience selling in

public. If you decide not to buy cookies, remember to be courteous and say, “No, thank you!” At least that

much. Remember when you were little and how you felt when you were rejected. It feels awful!!!!

Too many people mistakenly believe they must have children in school in order to join the PTA (the

Parent/Teacher Association.) This is simply not true. Any adult can join the PTA, an organization that for

more than 100 years has advocated for children: responsible for child labor laws, creating Kindergartens in our

schools, hot, nutritious lunches for school children, and so much more. If you join the PTA, you don’t even

have to attend any meetings, but your membership counts a great deal. Our elected officials pay attention to the

PTA.

The PTA provides an incredibly valuable, free educational resource online. It’s called ED100.org and

provides over 100 short, five-minute informative lessons on educational issues. It’s even available in Spanish.

Give it a look today!

Did you know: Do you want your prospective members/guests attending a

club meeting to witness how great your protocol is? Just remember some of

the following that will make your members, officers and chairmen look good:

1. When introducing “those seated at the Head Table”, the President

should request her Officers to stand or the President may script that

on her agenda for only her officers to see. Please listen to your President

and respect her request.

2. Do you introduce your Past Presidents, state Officer/Chairmen or District

Officer/Chairmen at a meeting? District acknowledges these special

members and hopes they’ve set the example for clubs to follow.

3. Do you have your Officers/Chairmen or those reporting come to the

lectern to use the microphone, or do they sit in their chair to report?

Very simple: This is called Protocol and Leadership Development.

4. Yes……. we live in a different time then years ago with smart phones,

laptops, mini pads etc. etc. Please remember to “silence” or put on

your phones on vibrate. While on this subject, it is distracting during a

meeting to be taking pictures with your phones. If you want to, go to

the back of the room and snap away!

CLUBMEMBER OF THE YEAR …………… Marian Hallin ~626-282-9210

All clubs now have a short time to choose a Member of the Year, write a 50-word essay telling why the person

was chosen and then fill out the application, have it signed by your President and submit it at Spring Council on

March 13, 2020. Please understand that this date is necessary for preparing on how many members are to be

honored and have their names printed in the Convention Program. It can be embarrassing to miss anyone or to

add them at a later date without this timely deadline.

I sincerely hope that all clubs will consider entering a Member to be honored. Every club has special people

that deserve recognition and this is a perfect time to share your appreciation with not only your own club but

with all of the participating clubs in SGVD.

You will find instructions in the SGVD 2019-2020 Yearbook on pages 61 and 62. Reading these will help you

in completing the necessary information. I will be out of State in February on the date of the SGVD Meeting

but will be glad to assist you in anyway, if help is needed. My email address is: [email protected]. My

telephone number is: 626-282-9210.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE…………………..Mavis Hansen …626-441-6231

Kudos to the 15 clubs that turned in reports and again this chairman asks those clubs that

do not yet have a chairman? Why not?

We all know that we cannot do everything, true, but we can all do something, and no

matter how small, it will make a big difference to someone and that someone might be the one

who has left their home with next to nothing and a toothbrush, lipstick or pair of socks, small

items that we take for granted every day, could mean so very much. Even if you do not have a chairman, why

not have one meeting, maybe in May, which is Mother’s Day month, where members are asked to bring in some

small items, toiletries, makeup, haircare, you know, all those items we use every day, maybe even a large purse

to put them in. Just think, if every club in our district helped only one woman, that would make 28 happy

women. Every little bit helps!

With hopes that this chairman has urged and encouraged your club to participate. Let’s see how many

clubs will take on this project! Will You???

Thanks for reading this report today, thinking about it and deciding to participate in a MOTHER”S

DAY IN MAY PROJECT.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH……………....Tina Ly……626-234-7754.

Some of you may know that I lived in Australia for 18 months from 2004 - 2006. My partner and I wanted to

take a career break in a warm weather, English-speaking, rugby country, and Australia won out over South

Africa. I went back to visit in 2015 and in July 2019. Raging fires over recent months have left me deeply

saddened that the people, animals, plants, and landscapes have suffered such immense tragedies. Below is an

article from the January 23, 2020 GFWC News & Notes e-newsletter. Thank you to all GFWC members for

your role in the healing of Australia.

GFWC Is Thinking of Australia

Catastrophic bushfires are devastating the land of

Australia. The thousands of people who have lost their

homes and have been forced to urgently evacuate are in

GFWC’s thoughts. So far, there’s been a total of 28 deaths

and 2,500 homes destroyed as the fire scatters through 25.5

million acres of land. Billions of animals have tragically

lost their lives. As the people of Australia work tirelessly to

rebuild their communities and restore wildlife, they are

faced with decreased resources. If you’re interested in

making a donation, here are three organizations that need

help.

KINDNESS ANGEL CHAIRMAN… Pat Borchard…909-576-4382

Just wanted to say thank you to the following clubs that

submitted their Kindness Angel narratives with picture at Birthday Council.

LEADERSHIP CHAIRMAN…. Toby Kahan …909-720-3532

Ask yourself, "What is the most valuable use of my time right now?" In other words, "What is my biggest task

of all at this moment?"

This is the core question of time management. Answering this question correctly is the key to overcoming

procrastination and becoming a highly productive person. Every hour of every day, one task represents the most

valuable use of your time at that moment. Your job is to ask yourself this question, over and over again, and to

always be working on the answer to it, whatever it is.

When taking a Leadership position you have to organize your time wisely. Getting help from others will

lessen the burden but it is ultimately your responsibility to make sure things get done in a timely manner. We

all waste time everyday doing the things that are not on the list, so get into the habit of making a list each night

of tasks that must be started or completed. This will help you feel good and organized!

Our District Convention is coming in April. Has your club selected Delegates? Remember all delegates must

be voted on by the club at a General Meeting. If selected to serve as a Delegate, your club should pay your

registration fee and if possible at least one meal function. Delegates are required to attend all sessions and take

back information to their club. They are part of the voting body at Convention and should come prepared to

vote on Bylaws and Standing Rules that have been discussed at a Club Meeting prior to Convention. Any

questions, feel free to contact me.

WOMEN’S HISTORY/RESOURCE CENTER…Diane Sexton….626-316-004

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Did you know that Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week? It began as a local celebration

in Santa Rosa, California by a task force of women who planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” in

1978. Two years later, a partnership of women’s groups, led by the National Women’s History Project

successfully lobbied for national recognition. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential

Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th, 1980 as National Women’s History Week.

“From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them,

men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes

their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love of the women

who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well.” President Jimmy

Carter’s Message designating National Women’s History Week.

Page 14: March 2020...2 SGVD Executive Committee Meeting, Peppertree @ 9:00am 12 SGVD Art & Photo Contest turn-in at Covina Woman’s Club, 9:30 – 11:30 AM 13 SGVD Spring Council, Covina

14

Honoring women’s achievements and courage with a designated “history week” remained a Presidential

Proclamation until 1995 when Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President

to proclaim March of each year as “Women’s History Month.” The rest is history!

There is still much to be done by women, for women and our club members take this responsibility to heart.

We honor our club’s “Voices of the Past” while we are making history today. We are today’s “Women of

History.” For some fresh ideas on projects to celebrate and observe National Women’s History Month, here are

some ideas gleaned from our Club members and from other women’s groups:

1. Put it in writing

Think of a woman you look up to and admire. She can be someone in your Club, personal life or a public

figure. Write her a letter describing the impact she has had on your life.

2. Study up on women’s history

Share what you’ve learned with others. Check out a museum who is dedicated to the accomplishments

of women. Many venues set up special exhibits during the month of march.

3. Have a girl’s lunch

Take your mother, grandmother, great-aunt Rita or your cousin to lunch. This can be a chance to spend

some one-on-one time with the women in your life. Who knows, they may reveal some interesting

stories and accomplishments you’ve never heard before.

4. Build a Riveting Photo Booth

Build a photo booth with props that are symbols of women who made history:

• Red bandana for Rosie the Riveter

• Lace collar for Ruth Bader Ginsburg

• Goggles for Amelia Earhart

• Stuffed monkey and safari hat for Jane Goodall

5. Learn about other creative women

Did you know that the refrigerator, computer software, the dishwasher and even Monopoly were all

invented by women? To learn more about the other 18 inventions, check out the website, www.Women

that Changed the World!

As we celebrate women’s accomplishments this month, let us be thankful for our leaders who struggled for

equality – Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucy Stone, Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet

Tubman, and Alice Paul.

As noted by Dr. Gerda Lerner in 1980, “Women’s History is Women’s Right.” “It is an essential and

indispensable heritage from which we can draw pride, comfort, courage, and long-range vision.”
