A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL SUNRISE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIMBERLY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT March, 2019 Principal Reflections March 2019 I think the weather is finally starting to change. Although I know that by saying so I am probably “jinxing” all of us, I still know that we are not far off from more and more warmth. With that we will have more outside activity and the school year will begin to “wind down”. I put the term “wind down” in quotations because it never feels like things are winding down. It actually feels like deadlines are ramping up. With that said, please read on to learn about several important upcoming dates. Up first (on this list) is our Volunteer Appreciation luncheon. On Wednesday, April 10, the Sunrise staff will host a Volunteer Appreciation luncheon. In case you did not receive your invitation, details are in this newsletter and an RSVP is greatly appreciated. Sunrise is a great place for our students, but it has always been my opinion that this is largely due to the volunteer support that we receive. Good people! Wednesday, April 24 of this year is Administrative Professionals Day. Please join me and the Sunrise staff in showering our school secretaries, Melissa and Monica, with signs of our appreciation for all that they do to keep our school community moving. They are the first face of our community for everyone who visits our school. They nurture all of the students who come to the office for any reason and they keep our community informed of all necessary information. Good people! The week of May 6-10 is Staff Appreciation week at Sunrise. We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong corps of educators at Sunrise. I have been very proud to work with this group of professionals - who come to work daily with a high level of urgency around their role in helping our students become familiar with their own potential as learners. Please think about how you and your child can express appreciation for our staff. Good people! On June 6 we have a great deal to celebrate. This will be the last day of the school year for our students as well as the day that we will hold our End of Year Celebration. This “carnival-type” of celebration will take place mid-morning until mid-afternoon. We will send more information at a later date, but want you to know that parents are welcomed and your help is appreciated. Additionally, on June 6, we will celebrate our 4th grade students who will be moving on to Intermediate school next year. During this event, we will recognize all 4th grade students with a morning celebration in the Gymnasium. Many of these students have been Sunrise Stingers for six years. Good people! Moving through the last several weeks of the school year can go quickly. If you have any needs that require attention from me or any other members of our staff, please feel free to reach out. Enjoy the temperatures! Sean SEAN FITZGERALD

Principal Reflections March 2019

I think the weather is finally starting to change.

STATE TESTING~ FORWARD EXAM 3rd & 4th Grade

It is getting to that time of year when state assessments will be starting. This year, the Forward Exam testing dates for Sunrise 3rd and 4th graders run from April 1st to April 26th. Both 3rd and 4th grades have designated days during this time to take specific portions of the assessment. As in the past, we ask that families try to avoid testing times for appointments, vacations, etc. Missed tests will need to be made up during our make-up date/time. More information will be sent home soon. Thank you for your cooperation.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART KIDS HEART CHALLENGE

The Jump Rope for Heart Kids Heart Challenge event was a great success. A huge thanks to everyone for being so generous and supporting our students. In honor of this event, Sunrise held an all school assembly on March 8th. During this event, students who raised over $150 could silly string a staff member of their choice. Please enjoy some of the great pictures taken.

ART DISPLAY

Our very own Sunrise artists, were given an opportunity to showcase their talent inside of Festival Foods grocery store on Van Roy Rd. in Darboy. Each student worked hard to create a beautiful sun to display together as a collaborative piece. Make sure you check out our sun shiney suns when you are shopping. Artwork is being delivered today and will be on display by this Friday, May 29th.

The Kimberly Area School District is dedicated to providing the safest environment for our students and staff. During the 2018-19 school year, schools will be implementing a new secure access system, commonly known as a “buzz-in entry”. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

● All visitors (including family members, volunteers, and vendors are required to follow the buzz-in procedure during the school day.)

● When you arrive, press the button on the intercom. Guests may be asked to present a government issued ID to the glass window for verification.

● A staff member may ask you some clarifying questions before granting access to the building.

● Once inside, continue to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badge while in the school.

● Anyone unfamiliar with the buzz-in procedure can refer to instructions posted at the main entrance of the school.

● We realize this system will require a change in practice from staff, families, and visitors.

● Thank you for your support as we work to create the safest learning environment possible.
