March 7, 2018 Dear Families, Following the tragic shooting in a Florida high school on February 14, students around the country are planning walkouts on March 14 to protest school violence. Anticipating that this movement may come to Vancouver schools, we want you to know how we will respond if students participate in a walkout. As educators, we support the First Amendment rights of our students to express their views on this important topic. When students advocate appropriately for change, it can be a powerful learning experience. We also recognize that some students may not want to participate in a walkout or related activities and may prefer to stay in class. We are committed to ensuring that all students feel safe and respected. River will recognize and honor the 17 lives lost in Florida as well as all victims of school violence. On March 14, our school and classes will operate on an assembly schedule. We will offer student-led alternatives to the “walkout”. This schedule will ensure all six periods continue with equal instructional time. Organized activities during the assembly time may be: voter registration information, ASB student presentations or a letter-writing activity during which students may communicate their concerns to leadership. These organized activities will include opportunities for students to participate or remain silent/respectful in a study area (Commons, Media Center and some designated classrooms). We are a closed campus. There will be no visitors or outside speakers on campus March 14. By state law and district policy, students who choose to walk out will receive an unexcused absence. If you want to excuse your child from class to allow her or him to participate, please contact your school office. As always, the safety of students is our priority. If a walkout should occur at any of our schools, we will assign staff and district safety officers as necessary to provide appropriate supervision during the walkout. District safety officers also will monitor student activity to the best of their ability if students leave campus. The district is communicating with local law enforcement about a coordinated response that helps to ensure the safety of students who may choose to leave campus. I invite you to contact me [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns about our plans for March 14. Thank you. Sincerely, Alex Otoupal Principal

News from CRHS Intervention Specialist Echo Moran-Prince (360) 313-3840

Did you know March is marijuana awareness month?

Nearly 45% of high school seniors have used marijuana.

Two-thirds of high school seniors do not view regular marijuana smoking as harmful.

Teens who perceive that their parents are permissive about marijuana use are much more likely to use marijuana compared to teens who believe their parents would not be okay with it.

There is no magic formula for preventing teen drug use. However, research indicates that parents have a big influence on their teens, even when it does not show! So talk openly with your children and stay actively engaged in their lives.

Below are risk and protective factors surrounding substance use.

Parent Canvas Access As part of the weLearn 1:1 initiative, many teachers are using the Canvas learning management system to organize digital resources, events, assignments and announcements for their students in grade three through 12. We are excited to announce that Canvas parent will now be available for you to access in Canvas as well. Canvas parent allows you to engage in your children’s education:

View your child’s courses. You will have the ability to switch between children if you have more than one child using Canvas.

View details for past and upcoming class assignments and events.

Receive notifications and alerts about your child’s activity in Canvas.

View your child’s grades in Canvas. These grades only represent assignments that have been graded within Canvas. Official grades will still be available in Skyward.

Check with your child’s teacher to determine specifically how Canvas is being used in their class. Please click Directions to set up a parent account. Canvas Parent is available on the web at https://vansd.instructure.com If you have questions, please email [email protected] and he will find the answer for you!
