All these and many more are the creations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to generations of read- ers as Dr. Seuss. Since publishing his first children’s book over fifty years ago, Geisel became perhaps the most successful writer in the whole field of children’s literature. His books for young readers have sold more than one hundred million copies and have been translated into almost every language on the globe. Animated television specials based on his stories have won Emmy and Peabody awards, and he was the recipient of a special Pulitzer Prize in recognition of his achievements. As Ralph Novak put it in People magazine, “Certainly no author has shown a greater understanding or love of children.” Geisel brought significant changes to the world of children’s book publishing in late 1957 when he released The Cat in the Hat. With one slim volume, Dr. Seuss challenged the idea that stories in primers, because of their restricted vocabularies, nec- essarily had to be dull. Stefan Kanfer, who wrote Geisel’s obituary for Time magazine, described the “Seuss” style as “looping, free-style drawings, clanging, infectious rhymes, and a relentless logic.” New York Times Book Reviewcorrespondent Ellen Lewis Buell noted of the author’s works: “This deft combination of easy words, swift rhymes and batty nonsense convinced thousands of hitherto skeptical children that reading could be fun--just as the grown-ups said.” Theodor Seuss Geisel. They have become part of our imaginations’ landscape: the crusty Grinch who stole Christmas, gentle Horton the elephant, the Cat in the Hat, and the persistent Sam-I-Am with his green eggs and ham. All these and many more are the creations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to generations of read-ers as Dr. As Ralph Novak put it in People magazine, “Certainly no author has shown a greater understanding or love of children.”

Geisel brought significant changes to the world of children’s book publishing in late 1957 when he released The Cat in the Hat. With one slim volume, Dr. Seuss challenged the idea that stories in primers, because of their restricted vocabularies, nec-essarily had to be dull. The adventuresome Cat in the Hat runs amok while Mother is away, leaving a horrible mess for the two astonished children who are so well behaved. The remarkable qualities of the story are its rhyme--done with only 223 words--and its quirky illustrations that are as silly as the tale itself.

By the time The Cat in the Hat appeared, however, Geisel had al-ready built a reputation around those effortless rhymes and silly drawings. Stefan Kanfer, who wrote Geisel’s obituary for Time magazine, described the “Seuss” style as “looping, free-style drawings, clanging, infectious rhymes, and a relentless logic.” New York Times Book Reviewcorrespondent Ellen Lewis Buell noted of the author’s works: “This deft combination of easy words, swift rhymes and batty nonsense convinced thousands of hitherto skeptical children that reading could be fun--just as the grown-ups said.”

Radio Stranger Friday, March 2 @ 6:00 pm Katie Murphy [email protected]

Americana artist Kelly Brightwell and folk-rocker Woody Moran have fused their talents, writing and performing together as Radio Stranger. This Portland, OR based act serves up catchy melo-dies and heartfelt messages with their collection of Eclectic Acoustic Pop tunes. Their sound is reminiscent of Birds of Chicago, The Swell Sea-son, and the UK band The Shires. Their 2nd EP, entitled CROSSTALK, was reviewed with high marks from Music Connection Magazine (Nov 2017) and they are included in Dec 2017 Music Connection’s Best Unsigned Bands of 2017. They recently were awarded an Official Showcase at the Far-West Conference, also appearing as song-writer panelists alongside Beth Wood and Jim Bruno (Shawn Colvin) at the conference. Radio Stranger opened for David Wilcox’s only Portland appearance in 2017. “Really good songs, great harmonies... you got pocket!” David Wilcox. From www.radiostranger.com

Slugs...Ugh! How to Deal With them in Your Garden

Monday, March 26, 6:30 pmSandy Public Library Community Room

Jim Kronenberg is an Oregon State University Master Gardener Volunteer since 2007. His primary interests are hummingbirds, butterflies, and native songbirds (good!) and slugs (bad!). He spent his career working for the Oregon Medical Association, a voluntary professional organization of physicians and surgeons. Now he enjoys hum-mingbirds and duels year round with slugs in his Lake Oswego back yard.

“Slugs and snails are a problem for Western Oregon gardeners. Our wet, mild springs give slugs the perfect environment in which to flourish. Like moles, they can’t be completely defeated, but I’ll share tips for holding them to a draw based on six de-cades of battling them.”

The mission of Sandy Seed Library is to create a free seed project committed to increasing the capacity of our community to feed itself wholesome food by means of education that fosters community resilience, self-reliance, and a culture of sharing.Contact Susie Jenkins with any questions [email protected]
